Aline Homzy is an award-winning violinist and composer. Originally from Montreal, born to a Québécois mom and an American dad with Eastern-European roots, her original music reflects her culturally-diverse background. An in-demand sideman, she has recorded for artists including David Occhipinti, Andrew Downing, The Weather Station, Amanda Tosoff and many more. She is an up-and-coming strings arranger and is quickly becoming known for her string orchestra writing, having been selected for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's Explore the Score. A recipient of numerous grants, Aline is in the process of recording her first album, supported by the Canada, Ontario and Toronto Arts Councils.

Soon after recording this music for piano and cello, I heard something unusual in the sound.  Though it was written in a language without words, the music spoke with compassion, a language that’s understood everywhere.  Such music is good medicine, as it helps us let go of our doubts and fears.  In fact, those unwelcome distractions add too many troubles to our minds.  But music can awaken our awareness that we’re not here for that.  We are here to touch each other’s hearts.  That is the source of our greatest redeeming value and our best reason for living.

Cinquefoil is a monthly music series held in Church of St. John the Evangelist church in beautiful Hamilton, ON.

Each month, we host 5 artists or groups and each performs 10 minutes of material loosely tied to a common theme.  

On December 22, 2017, we hosted George Crotty + Kirk Starkey, Jeremy Ludwig, Wayne Petti, Alexei Gulenco + a new rag-tag trio dubbed the Cinquefoil Çingers.

The theme was OUT OF THE COLD - December is so much more than a holiday season.  It's cold out there and we love nothing more than to come OUT of the cold, inside where it's nice and warm.

Tuesday Night Kirtan is a weekly, guided experience of healing and uplifting sound. Integrating mantra, rhythm and beautiful live instruments, the group is led toward a deep state of meditation.

In this recording, Jahnavi Harrison guides the group in singing the Maha Mantra, accompanied by the Bhakti Center's kirtan team, and featuring special guest, George Crotty on cello. 

In the yoga tradition, sound is used as a powerful tool for inner transformation. Tuesday Night Kirtan is a simple and authentic way to relieve stress, refresh the mind and connect with the heart.

Confesión

George Crotty has forged his own exciting vocabulary on the cello,  pushing the boundaries of the cello as a jazz instrument. Following his graduation from the Berklee College of Music, Crotty immersed himself in New York’s jazz and world music scenes, playing with several ensembles, such as the Brooklyn Raga Massive, and the Detroit-based National Arab Orchestra. Additionally, he has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with Simon Shaheen, Paquito D’Rivera, Anat Cohen, and Darol Anger.

The George Crotty Trio’s Chronotope (2022) showcases the Canadian cellist’s expressive fluidity and modal orientation. Their cross-cultural interplay draws on diverse influences within jazz and global music traditions including post-bop, modal jazz, Indian Raga, and Arabic Maqam.

One half of the Loose Roots Duo with West Coast fiddler Gabriel Dubreuil, the Canadian cellist also performs in a unique solo setting that explores his Irish and Jewish heritage.
