DC Promo Tracks #796: Dazion "Candle In A Hurricane"

London based duo Running Hot have been making noise over the past few years for their deep digging DJ sets around London, alongside their DJ edits series and popular YouTube channel.

Their sound covers a lot of ground, from the weird and the wonderful to the best in dance floor business; moving through Reggae, Street Soul, Boogie, Disco, House, Techno & Garage and all the sounds in between.

You can catch them every month via their residency on Balamii radio.

About the mix: We've been meaning to do this mix for a while and this series seemed like the perfect opportunity. It's very much inspired by the legendary "Soft Rock for Hard Times" series from the Universal Cave guys, but this one focuses on yacht rock inspired sounds from outside the US.

One year and a half after Jaroska’s ’Red Room Offering’ release, Lyon-based AR/FM label is back with the fourth imprint of its catalog, due for June 2021.
Following the label’s aim of exploring a widened techno spectrum while working with and promoting unsung talented friends, AR/FM is about to provide another beautiful piece of music, this time from ephemeral trio Stakhanov.

This eponymous LP offers 55 minutes of dense, fluctuant electronic experimentations, taking inspirations in the relentless Soviet worker myth. Its frantic and industrial overall atmosphere, set by sharp yet harsh paces, is eventually pulled to pieces by murky and hallucinated ambient acts, depicting a way darker story than the one told by the USSR propaganda.

Thus, one rhetorical question remains: Could this unhealthy man-a-machine glorification come to any different end than madness?

Based upon Hugo Charpentier’s drawings, that can be found both on inner and outer sleeves, the 7-track album definitely takes advantage of its visual dimension, resulting in an elegant double-12” black-&-white gatefold layout.

Releasing Stakhanov was also for AR/FM a way to pay tribute to the golden era of Lyon alternative electronic scene around 2013-2016, of which the project-members were three of the many faces.
Through their different collectives and labels (CLFT Militia, SILO, Palma…) amongst others, all the instigators of this creative craze considerably contributed to the constitution of a new generation of Lyon-scene protagonists, AR/FM being one of them.

Marseille based Frenchman Fred Berthet -– also known as DJ Steef – is finally back on Cologne’s Feines Tier label after his vinyl EP Chaleur Spectrale in 2018 and an edit EP in 2020. His new Lost & Sound EP is a strong 6 tracker showing Fred’s love for house music with a special catch. Once again multi-instrumentalist and producer Johannes Klingebiel delivers a superbe remix with his well known distinctive touch. Eh boom! C’est le shock!

Jumanne and Kasimir have dug deep once again and present over an hour of Suriname only tracks for your listening pleasure, expertly presented with voice-overs from TV and radio shows over the last 40 years, all involving Surinamese Dutch accents and we are told often funny moments for those who speak Dutch. This is one of the tracks from the very new album "SORRY! WE DID SOMETHING WRONG" that happened to be a debut release on @Simple-Symmetry's own label "NEW EARS".

This song started with the simple gamma played on the «gendèr» (you can hear this bell sound on 02:18 and a couple of times more during the track ) - it’s a type of metallophone used in Balinese and Javanese traditional gamelan music. We bought this instrument when we visited Bali and this is exactly that sort of case when the sound of one specific instrument inspires you to build the whole musical story around. Then followed the drum machine with live percussion jam on top, a bass and a bit detuned melody played on Moog with Roland Space Echo. The song starts with the spoken word by our friend C.A.R. (she reads the mantra from Frank Herbert’s Dune) and then goes the beautiful vocal melody created and performed by Lord Fascinator - an amazing Australian musician living in New York.

Since he started his label 'Hard Fist' in 2016, founded in Lyon, France by a collective led alongside with his partner @Tushen_Rai, he has been advocating for an uninhibited approach to dance music, where his sound stands at the convergence of cosmic, discoid and wavy sounds, percussion, dark synths, psyche voices, breaks and bells as some of his distinctive signature.

For Hard Fist they've counted with artists such as Bawrut, The Juan MacLean, Khidja, Sascha Funke, Lokier, Simple Symmetry, Niv Ast, Damon Jee or Thomass Jackson among many others.

On a personal level, he has been releasing music for the last years under his own name or together with Hard Fist partner Tushen Raï, on labels such as Tom Tom Disco, Ombra International, Duro, Correspondant, Permanent Vacation, Mutant Radio, New Day Everyday, The Magic Movement or Play Pal to name just a few imprints.
