C H I A R O S C U R O

Most of us know the term chiaroscuro as one of the prominent painting techniques from the Renaissance. Literally translated from Italian into English as light-dark, this method of applying bold contrasts was used to create depth in the representation of an image. The pith of this approach to light lies in the interplay of appearing and disappearing; what is exposed, what is hidden? This observation appealed to me musically and became the point of departure for this composition. The mechanics of gradually revealing and concealing shape the framework in which two textural layers shift back and forth in unsynchronised cycles that progressively move towards synchronisation.

Je reçois un des musiciens les plus stimulants de nos terres auvergnates : Ernest Bergez alias Sourdure. Il vient de sortir un nouvel album, De Bon Astre, une bande sonore conçue pour le film “Debout sur la montagne“ de Sébastien Betbeder. A la lisière entre communauté artistique localement identifiée, scène musicale dite de niche et reconnaissance critique nationale, Ernest trace un chemin artistique plein de sincérité et d’exigence, et c’est un grand plaisir de l’accueillir dans Open Sky pour un entretien et un dj set. Study no.1 is guided by the principle of symmetry. The central spot of the composition is in the middle of the room - half the way on both horizontal X- and Z-axis. Each object always moves through both halves of at least one of the X- or Z-planes. The element which is being doubled, is followed by the same-pace movement of the element on the opposite side of the axis, but the movement is being reversed: element no.6 positioned on Z-4 goes from X-5 to X+5 while at the same time in the same speed element no.7 at Z+4 goes from X+5 to X-5. 
There are three elements which are the musical nucleus of the composition (1, 2, 3). These sounds are airy (noisy) but they have a recognisable pitch and form a minor triad. All other elements are tuned to these three elements which define the tonal center of the piece. This kind of interpretation of the harmonic aspect of the composition, parallels the interpretation of ‘symmetrical’ in spatial domain.

The piece - Lafken Kürüf - has been composed from recordings taken in the south of Chile in 2015. Mixing various sounds of the wind and the ocean, as well as glimpses of voices, those emblematic sounds from my stay there are composed in a short piece transcribing the powerful sonic landscape that has accompany me during the three months spent in the Mapuche Lafkenche community of Traïtraïko Leufu. The noise of the wind on the rooftop of my house and the rumble from the Pacific Ocean close by kept me from sleeping at night as i would imagine it coming out from its bed, like in the Mapuche Lafkenche mythology.
