GA-Mix_ LUllabies for Insomniacs

Recorded in Lisbon, Winter 2017. I present the first volume of Synthesizer Ditties inspired by a bygone age of witches and wizards, knights and dragons, enchanted swords, haunted graves, sacred forests and regal kingdoms. Recorded almost entirely on a Korg Monologue + spring reverb / LN76 (TR-08 on some ditties also). I've not made the other volumes yet, but when i do, maybe i'll put it out as some sort of expensive compendium or do a limited dubplate run or something else annoying like that? Nick Klein is an electronic music artist interested in loud volume as form, as well as the sociology and ideology that is present in music subcultures. Netherlands based Klein runs radio programs, a label, and organizes events under the title "Psychic Liberation." He has released on the labels L.I.E.S., BANK, Unknown Precept, Viewlexx, Monorail Trespassing, and iDEAL. 

His latest release Actor-Network Theory on iDeal was recorded in 2018 and is the final record Klein made as a resident in New York, before moving to Den Haag. Taken from a caption on his Instagram, Klein describes the record as a weaving of “disparate sonic narrative[s] of dissociative opiated sleeping-bag retreats and anxiety fueled drum loops... Music for sleeping in a cold basement with a short blanket, coughing up a cigarette at Pier 94 in February, or lamenting the fickle nature of one’s own metabolism.” Actor-Network Theory can be found on iDEAL’s Bandcamp.

In these moments of uncertainty caused by a beloved nephew that is right now fighting for his life, we can recognize and appeal to the community that we have been creating around the music. So, with that in mind, we wanted to ask you whatever your beliefs are, to light a candle and transmit with your body and soul all the energy that you can to Lucas and his safe recovery.

In "The Acquisition of Language & The Language of Acquisition", artist-poet Luzie Meyer traces the property of language to both confine and liberate, and the verbal means of expression available to us in times of digital media and algorithms. With the faculty of being able to express oneself through these forms (templates) comes the problem of false equivalence or commensurability: Unlike the spider that mechanically reproduces the same pattern again and again, The Acquisition of Language & The Language of Acquisition explores the gaps and interstices in which such tools and formats might possibly be used for different and poetic ends.

The long poem reads as a succession of “exercises” (chapters) and addresses the intricate entanglement between the individual and the universal, or the authentic and the socially constructed. Blending sound (among which are zither pieces of her friend Magda Barthofer, or composition techniques borrowed from musique concrète) with writing techniques such as cut-up, Meyer investigates the psychology of language forms and formats. As the narrator of the poem finds themself looking for a different and individualized alphabet, the use of an all-too-familiar language of therapy and self-enhancement reveals it as yet again firmly merging with the logic of neoliberal value and exchange.

The spoken word is accompanied and interrupted by musical interludes. The musique concrète compositions are created with a drum rack of original percussion sounds recorded at home, as well as with a ready-made set of sounds from Ableton. Additionally, the piece includes sounds of a lapharp (zither), played by Magdalena Barthofer, which were recorded with Ableton with an effects pedal.
