La messe de silence et de bruits est un projet original. Plutôt que de suivre le plan de la liturgie, la messe que je propose est, à la manière du célèbre texte de Teilhard de Chardin, une sorte de Messe sur le monde, ou plutôt sur le son du monde, ponctuée de rares silences et de bruits.

THE WAR IN HEAVEN (ANGEL'S MONOLOGUE) is an electroacoustic music theater piece written in 2019-2020. The libretto is based on the play by Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaikin, itself written in 1984, and first performed by Chaikin with music by Sam Shepard. The play was first performed on the WBAI radio station in New York City in 1985. 
At the very beginning of the play, the angel tells us "I died. The day I was born I died and became an angel on that day." The play tells us of the Angel's many attempts to return "home"; on earth, he is lost, all the time he is there, he is weakening, unable to find his place, as he has no Earthly purpose. He is there by mistake. 
In order to compose this piece, I first recorded it with my own voice, performing it like an actor would to the best of my theatrical abilities.
With the assistance of Olga Krashenko, my recording of the text was transcribed into fully notated microtonal speech melodies with elaborate indications of timbre changes with continuous transformations of dynamics as well.
Speech itself, by its very nature, is microtonal and so must the sung bass voice part be as performed by Nicholas Isherwood. In order to create a heterophonic relation with the bass voice, I use the same speech melodies for the trombone part as I did for the bass voice, but the trombone is played slightly desynchronized, micro-delayed, and with different timbre changes than the bass voice, using many different mutes, sounding at times like a ghost double of the bass voice, an instrumental phantom without words. 
I want to thank very much my dear friend, Nicholas who braved the Corona Virus to come from Paris to the Saint Martin Church in the village of Sargé sur Braye to record this 51' long work. 
Many thanks especially to Térence Meunier, the wonderful sound engineer who recorded Nicholas with great skill and who also made the perilous journey to Sargé from Paris. 
As for my other dear friend, Giancarlo Schiaffini, due to international travel restrictions, he was unable to come to Sargé from Rome. 
This did not deter Giancarlo from recording the trombone part himself and sending it to me ! 
With these two wonderful performers and these two inspiring recordings, I added computer electronics to the trombone part and mixed bass voice, trombone and electronics down to stereo.
This music theater piece is still waiting for its first "live" performance, either in concert or fully staged, hopefully, with the addition of the third silent performer that also has it's own fully written score, that of gesture; not just music without words, but music without sound.
Given the difficult circumstances that made it nearly impossible for musicians to work in 2020, this recording is nothing short of a miracle, a musical miracle that creates "electroacoustic music theater" in the mind of those listening to the words and the music. 
Sometimes what we can't see can be richer for our imaginations than what we can see...
