Bats hunting over a channel near to the highway B70 at Leer in Ostfriesland, Germany. Bats are mainly noctules and pipistrelles. Original recording @192 kHz sampling rate, Primo EM258 AB 60cm stereo. Two heterodyne transformations (@20kHz and @45kHz) were remixed with the original  recording. In this way you hear the bats, ducks and traffic, all at the same time.

After a very hot day a thunderstorm passed through the night. The onset had so heavy winds that the mics were completely distorted. So I had to take it out. This recording starts where the lightning is at its heaviest, thunder is everywhere rolling back and forth and there seems to be no ending to it.

Headphones recommended. Do not hesitate to put volume to max, then you have the real experience.

Rolling Thunder - 2022/6/30 - Kloster Muhde

Bargerveen is the largest peat reservate in The Netherlands. It is promoted as an area of (ultimate)silence. May be so, compared to elsewhere in the Netherlands. This recording is far from silent. A frog chorus sings loudly during the night whilst disco basses protrude from miles away. Are the frogs stimulated by the disco sounds?

Frogs & Disco - 2022/06/24 - Bargerveen

Less than one minute excerpt out of an hour of bat recording at Zuidlaardermeer near Groningen in the Netherlands. Replayed at 0.14 times the original speed. You hear crickets, they are the rhythm section, geese that sound like elephants or lions and on top of that noctule bats hunting above the mics.

Zuidlaardermeer - 2023/07/28 - from a bat perspective

Since mid July a group of rooks is visiting the trees in our garden every morning. Actually it is a mixed group of rooks and jackdaws. It is a kind of gathering before they leave to the fields for foraging. 
I will try to make best recording as possible. This is a first snap-shot like take. No special effort made, just put my newly made mid-side mic in the garden on a 1.5 m hight tripod.
Things to be improved:
Traffic noise in the background: Repeat on a Sunday morning or with a different wind direction.
Crow voices not as full as I would like: Higher gain setting, try to get closer.
Hiss: All hiss is noise from leaves in the wind. Wait for a quiet wind still morning.
Since I don't want to wait - I will first try to get closer to the birds (to be continued).

Rook - 2023/07/30 - Take 1: MS

Large groups of Jackdaws and Rooks sleep in the trees in the city of Leer. Unfortunately, most people don't want them to and therefore they will chase them away.
I made a lightweight rig, AB 60 cm, and followed the crows through the city. You can hear them fly away at 4,5 min and being chased through hand clapping at ca. 9 minutes. In the end they calm down as it gets dark.

A Steel Door - 2023/08/23 - Talking in the Wind

For the last nine years I have had recorders in the field almost every winter to detect poaching. Here is a shot taken in early January 2016 shortly after sunset at a protected roosting site for geese and other water birds. At two minutes in the recording, cars arrive at the place where I hid the recorder. You will hear the preparation including the explanation "yesterday I shot so much that I brought the trailer with me today". Then the shooting starts. 62 shots are fired in about 15 minutes. After that the poachers quickly leave the scene.

Some people don't like birds on their land and deterr them eg. by shooting. Here is an example recording made in the winter of 2021 in an area where hunting was not allowed. The guy with the gun comes in a car and stops exactly next to my hidden recorder. A.o. things, he says: "I should do some shooting here". The rest speaks for itself.
Mind your ears, the shot is really loud.

During the night all other sounds have disappeared and we hear the mills on their own. As can be seen in the spectrogram, the sound is characterised by high power in the lowest frequencies (infrasound). So, use good headphones when you want to hear it!

5–8 Beaufort wind on an otherwise dry and sunny day. Testing new windshield and pseudo-binaural setup in our garden. Wind is flowing through the leafless trees, small birds and geese can be heard from time to time. Some cars passing by are almost absorbed by the wind sound......not bad.

Second track of the wind blowing ahead of the 'Dennis' storm forecasted for tomorrow. This particular tree was hit by 'Ciara' (UK,NL) alias 'Sabine' (GER) and landed in his neighbour. The sound is different from that of the dead tree. In the third minute a Bussard flies over crying loudly. The stronger wind sounds are from a Douglas fir wood some 100 meters away.

Wind & Wood - 2020/02/15 - Oldehave, Ostfriesland

This is my last recording covering the storm 'Dennis'. Sustrum Moor lies in the former Bourtanger Moor. This moorland formed a natural border between the Netherlands and Germany for over thousands of years. All peat has been removed during the last 150 years and the remaining landscape is flat and empty. Soils are sandy and of low fertility. They are used mainly for non-food crop farming, animal feed and intensive livestock production (pigs & poultry). Also you will find many wind-parks in this region. It was difficult to make the recording, the only hide I had was behind the car. I tried behind the mill but was literally blown away...no chance. 
Listen how the blades of the mill cut the storm in slices...

The recordings of Microchiropteran Bats by Hearing Beings (see below) made me wonder what is the maximum ultrasonic frequency that can be reproduced in Soundcloud. Soundcloud suggests best quality is reached by uploading file format 48/16. As a consequence upper frequency should be 24 kHz (Nyquist) which is not much for original bat recordings. 

But why not give it a try? I made a recording at 384 kHz sampling rate of an artificial chirp going down from 95 to 15 kHz in 1 second (see spectrogram attached). The original recording is in the first second of this track. I attached a 10 x slowed down replay for being able to hear the chirp. There is some aliasing and distortion in the recording, but nothing problematic. The track was uploaded to Soundcloud as 192 kHz/16 bit WAV. Then, I downloaded it and checked the result: Frequency goes up all the way to 95 kHz....whoopy!!! No limits so far!
