Health Pearl #549: How May We Help You?

As we enter the Season of Thanks, the Season of Light, and the Season of Giving, I think it is important to treat ourselves to the Gift of Better Health!

This means different things to different people. But since this is the only physical body we know, we owe it to ourselves to become more familiar with it. 
* How many of you know the placement of your major organs, and their functions? 
* Are you aware that when you have pain or discomfort, where that pain comes from?
* And do you know how to fix it when there is a problem?

Having a better understanding of your physical body is a great step in the direction towards better health, greater fitness, less discomfort, and towards a longer and healthier life.

This year, too many of us have been diagnosed with Diabetes, Osteoarthritis, Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, and Mental Disorders. These may be the result of chronic imbalances that have been lingering for years. 

Often the natural solutions are quite simple, but they always involves more  initiative on our end.

Health Pearl #550: Gift the Gift of Health

More and more people discover they have an allergy to wheat and gluten.  Others have done testing to find out that they are actually Celiac, which can be very debilitating, even dangerous to your health.

If you have discovered that you are Celiac and you've made adjustments in your home and kitchen to accommodate yourself and your family, be extra careful when travelling this season.

Restaurants saying they have Gluten-Free options often do not have a Gluten-Free kitchen.  Cutting boards, utensils, microwaves, deep fryers, and bread baskets may be used for gluten containing food as well.  Those sensitive enough may experience intestinal problems during dinner, up to days afterwards.

These issues should also be discussed with family or friends you plan to visit this Christmas season.  Maybe bring some ingredients and utensils with you. Ask very specific questions concerning possible cross-contamination.

Health Pearl #551: Tips for staying Gluten-Free this Holiday Season

It is hard to believe another twelve months have gone by
And here we are again at Christmas, …and New Year's nigh.

I hope your year was one to remember, with positive change
Maybe good things sprouting from it, and little left to rearrange.

Your New Year's list apparently was followed through,
As you focused on sticking with what you had to do.

Others have continued being caught in economic hardship,
Hopefully 2014 will be a more successful trip.

Yes, we see pain in the faces of those suffering every day:
When financial, emotional and physical struggles get in the way.

How we can change things for the better,
Depends partly on pulling our thoughts and feelings together.

We need to trust there is a solution, a way out,
And that it starts with our own inner power, no doubt!

This Season, find time within to rediscover your self,
And put your worries for a better future on a shelf!

Health Pearl #552: A Christmas Pearl

As the New Year 2014 is quickly approaching, you may be thinking about things you can improve on "health wise".

And although the main goal is usually to lose some weight and focus on better health… those are actually some pretty general statements.

Health is so much more than that!

Look for example at your digestion:
Do you get an upset stomach after you eat? You feel bloated? How about bowel problems?

Are you sleeping well at night? Do you get enough hours? Are you suffering from sleep apnea? How about disturbing dreams; or excessive sweating?

Way too many people deal with inflammatory pain, and they take medication just to make it through the day? 

This could affect your liver, your heart and your brain.

How about women with un-diagnosed hormone issues?

Are you aware that many are on pain medication and antidepressants, which in turn affects their eating habits, their sleep, energy level, and love life?

Health Pearl #553: Health Challenges in the New Year

Even before reaching our goals at the end of 2013, many of us already had big plans for 2014. In other words, as much as the end of each year should be a time of reflection, we are still driving in third gear: in many ways we are a busy people!

Hey, this is Jacobus from Gesundheit!.
I have learned that, as busy as we are, somehow we all look for balance in our lives. We often think that if we work really hard, we will reap the benefits later. But what are these benefits? Will we ever get there? And who and what may we miss along the way?

Life will knock on our door, but will only become our teacher if we allow it to be. life represents body, mind, and spirit. life presents itself in the people surrounding us. We have a big responsibility to really interact with those who depend on us. 

Making things better in the world can only happen when we become better in our OWN WORLD. Comparing ourselves with others is unfair and unrealistic.

Health Pearl #554 - New Year's Reflections

There are these moments in life, people we talk to, and places we visit, when we may have a "WOW" experience! 

They can be familiar words but in a different context, or a location that seems familiar, but we have never been there.

We didn't expect it, we didn't ask for it, and we may not know what to do with it. However, these moments bring up 'something': thoughts and feelings about missed chances perhaps, a quick vision ahead towards a new opportunity, or it could cause a reaction profoundly affecting us, or that specific situation.

And, in spite of whenever or whatever this is, or what it means, we will always consciously remember these occurrences, as they are unique for us, and to us.

I can tell you that when it happened to me, my life stood still. And after I found time to embrace that moment it brought a tremendous opportunity for healing; and I moved forward with much clearer resolve and purpose! 

I wish this good fortune to happen to you this year!

Health Pearl #555: Life's WOW Experiences

Have you ever heard of mushrooms that have healing properties? 
These fungi are called "Medicinal Mushrooms"; and names include Agaricus, Cordyceps, Lion's Mane, Maitake, Reishi, and Shiitake. 
Chinese and other eastern healing modalities have included them in their healing practices, with excellent results.

Some of you culinary wizards out-there may have tried them in special dishes, as they will add extra flavor and structure to specific meals. 
However, here in the western hemisphere they are mostly consumed in pill or powder form.

There is excellent, and well-published research done on these medicinal mushrooms and their healing properties. Pretty much all of them have demonstrated improvement of the immune system, especially when used daily, with or without a quality multivitamin.

Health Pearl #556: Medicinal Mushrooms

All Medicinal Mushrooms such as Chaga, Turkey Tail, Maitake and Agaricus, are amazingly complex, but also powerfully nurturing for our immune systems.

Chaga, for example contains over two hundred potent and unique plant nutrients.

Chaga is maybe the richest source of Melanin, a deep pigment that gives color to our skin, hair, eyes and iris. Melanin diffuses 99% of all ultra-violet radiation, making it a very strong antioxidant.

Research shows that Chaga is food for the Pineal Gland in our brain. This gland is responsible for producing Tryptophan, Serotonin, and Melatonin, all hormones important for relaxing the brain and helping us sleep.

Health Pearl #557: Medicinal Mushroom: CHAGA

Were you aware that several organizations are doing human clinical trials on the effectiveness of Medicinal Mushrooms?

Two of these functional fungi, Maitake and Turkey Tail, are now researched for: 
* Tumor regression, 
* Working in conjunction with chemotherapy, 
* How they improve our immune systems.

Maitake has been recommended for a while now. When cancer patients undergo chemotherapy, and take Maitake mushroom extracts simultaneously, there is greater success in reducing tumors than just chemotherapy alone, or just Maitake alone.

Maitake has also shown to help in prevention of nausea, hair loss, and pain when undergoing cancer treatment.
