Welcome to the first mix of 2016, we are proud to bring Split Dubstep on board to kick off another year of quality 140. We've already featured his lovely tune  'Fever Mood' with great response and now want to step things up to start the year off, this mix showcases alot of Split's own production & dubs alike.

We caught up with Alf for a brief Q & A, to go a little deeper into his take on music & things alike, so without further ado!

Q: First off, could you tell us how long have you been involved in music?

A: Actually all my life, I have many musicians in my family and started getting music lessons at the age of 6, piano, guitar & lute. Later down the track, I founded bands where i used to play guitar and it all evolved from there.

By the end of 2002 i became the mc of Hotstepper Sound, which is a local reggae/dancehall sound system. I still work for Hotstepper and i'll keep on doing that untill i die! (by the way big up Sken, Sally and Topshotta).

In 2007 I came in contact with dubstep and I really felt the need to produce that music and play it in the club as a dj, even though I didnt know how to produce music with the computer. but you can learn anything and I had a good feeling for music so I started producing and discovered my creative focus from there.
 
The majority of my tunes are still dubstep but I think its not good to be focused on just one genre so I also like to produce house, hip hop or something completly experimental. as long as it's got the typical "split fingerprint", its all good. ;)

Q: Who and what are you biggest influences for your music?

A: Its difficult to answer that question because any music I like can be an influence for my own work, it doesnt matter which genre it is, as long as I feel the tune, in the modern roots music I well dig Garnet Silk (R.I.P), Buju, Luciano, Morgan Heritage & when it comes to dancehall im rating Mad Cobra, Bounty Killer, Busy Signal just to name few.
If you ask me about my dubstep influences I highly rate Mala, Silkie, Commodo, Author, The Chord Marauders and Phaeleh, their style is great.

Q: Do you have many releases planned for 2016?

A: I havent decided as of yet, but I definitly want to release one Dub/Tech EP (maybe 2 tunes on the 121 bpm tip) . Im also keen on crafting a dungeon & jazz influenced dubstep EP, so hoping to sort that this year.
 
Moreover to work on an album with beats from 112 to 120 bpm, but I dont know if im gonna release it this year, time will decide, 2016 is just beggining, and soon i'll be digging into the music library & deciding what i shall release next.;)

Q: What DAW & mixing setup do you use/prefer?

A: Reason and Cubase, I always used those two programms and im not gonna change a running system, then I have my midi keyboard to play melos and to use pitch or mod wheel (actually I dont need all other functions on this keyboard).

Sometimes I use a recorder to record my own samples. Especially if im not feeling like sitting infront of the computer I take the recorder and go outside to find some good samples.

Q: Whats your favourite style of beer?

A: Cant answer that question there are too many good beers, haha, but overall I really like one German beer very much its called "Tannenzäpfle"...
