Steve Lawler creates an anthem for our times in his long-awaited debut for Truesoul.

Steve Lawler first released on one of Adam Beyer’s imprints back in 2008, dropping the minimal-tinged ‘Doves / Chalkee’ on Drumcode, a collaboration with fellow Brit Alex Tepper. Yet despite the groove-orientated vibes of his sound, ‘People’ marks his debut on DC’s little brother imprint Truesoul. 

Lawler’s created a powerful hymn about the state of the world, linking up with Lisbon’s MC Johnny Def whose stirring vocal combines masterfully with a catchy two-note synth loop and driving percussion, building to an uplifting crescendo. The functional package also includes a Dub Mix of ‘People’, offering up a crunchy, tweaked out tech version, alongside an Acapella.

Lawler explains about ‘People’, “This track was written because of what I see and hear around the world on a daily basis now - the fighting, racism, sexism, terrorism. As a father it scares the hell out of me. I had to write something, but never knew how to do it without making a depressing record. So, this is my attempt to make something beautiful, but with the message I wanted.”

Andrea Oliva is the latest blue-chip artist to make their debut on Truesoul in 2019.

The respected Swiss DJ/producer has long commanded the juncture between house and techno, releasing on-point cuts on Cadenza, Objektivity and more recently Cuttin Headz and Play It, Say It!. He’s likewise put his stamp on Ibiza as a resident of one of the island’s premiere underground weeklies, ANTS. It was at the Ushuaia party’s opening in May 2018 that Adam Beyer recorded Drumcode Radio episode #411, making Oliva’s debut on Truesoul a natural follow-on. 

The ‘Repeater’ EP is a muscular four-track package, the original built around persistent synth stabs made for sweat box moments. Label favourite Oscar L amplifies the intensity, adding an exhilarating melodic underbelly and fiery snares pushing the vibe towards peak time. ‘Jam Table’ throbs with a rave-injected pulse as scattergun key patterns add a deliciously head-scrambling element to the mix. Drumcode regular Marco Faraone dons a Truesoul cap to contribute a deeper, Detroit-inspired work to round out the pack.

Matt Sassari is Truesoul’s first debutant of 2020, landing a punchy four-track work.

Hailing from the French port town of Marseille, the emerging artist caught Adam Beyer’s ear with strong cuts on imprints such as Relief Records and Sci-Tec. When the emerging artist begun sending demos, they quickly connected with the Truesoul boss and ‘Crack Body’ was rinsed heavily throughout the summer months of 2018.

Such is Beyer’s A&R style, patiently waiting for all the pieces of the EP puzzle to take shape, Sassari’s maiden release for the label has finally found form. The title track – familiar to fans from DCR415 – is a groove-packed party-starter brought to life by a rousing vocal sequence. With its bumping bottom end and attitude-packed vox, ‘Bruuh’ is a colourful and energetic addition to any set. ‘Everytime I See You’, is soulful techno made for big occasions, led by a memorable vocal and shuffling beats. ‘Cooking Drums’ displays Sassari’s penchant for building plenty of swing from the ground upwards, as chopped up vocal effects lay atop a sturdy bed of drums to create a useful DJ tool.
