Today, I have the honor and privilege of speaking with Judy Hoberman. Judy is a true example of a person whose resilience, perseverance, and commitment to valuing her whole self allowed her to conquer massive barriers to success. At the age of 17, her own father told her that “all she was was pretty, and she would never amount to anything else.” She repeatedly refused to allow her intelligence to be suppressed and pursued her passion for business.

Early in her career she was employed by a roofing company. She was told to be the face of company and not to speak in order to be successful. If she would’ve obeyed these voices, the world would never have benefited from the brilliance of her many books including “Selling in a Skirt,” “Famous Isn’t Enough,” “Pure Wealth,” and most recently “Walking on the Glass Floor: Seven Essential Qualities of Women Who Lead.” These business books for sales executives and entrepreneurs have been featured on Fox News Radio, CNN Headlines, ABC, CBS, and Good Morning Texas. If she would’ve allowed these stifling voices to silence her own, the world would never have heard her TED Talk called “The Greatest Missed Opportunity” or listened to her radio show called “Selling in a Skirt” which airs on Mondays at 12pm Central on the Women for Women Radio Network. After 6 years in the league he suffered a Patellar Tendon rupture in his left knee which ended his career in the NFL and led to the phenomenal work he is doing now to empower, inspire, and champion people to become their very best with relentless grit, endurance, and perseverance. Cory recently joined Mark Pattison in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro as part of Mark’s Summit Project and Chris Long’s Waterboys organization. Every season, Green Beret and former Seattle Seahawk Nate Boyer joins Chris Long in challenging combat veterans and NFL alumni to join him in conquering Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. Cory conquered it even after losing vision in one eye due to altitude sickness. He is a phenomenal example of resilience and speaks frequently about how to possess the habits that create greatness as a keynote speaker. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Kasie Lynn, the Founder and CEO of Kasie Helps Kidz www.khkidz.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to children fighting cancer. She is a 2 time childhood cancer survivor who has taken her experiences as a child survivor and created an organization that strives to continuously provide children and their guardians with a strong support system during and after their battle against cancer. Her organization focuses on lifting the spirits of those currently undergoing treatments by providing them with teddy bears, pizza, and a movie night in the hospital. Kasie also facilitates other events where child cancer survivors can connect with peers to experience the strength and resilience that is generated by spending time with others who are facing similar challenges. In 2013, Kasie created the Kasie Helpz Kidz Financial Assistance Program which assists families with up to $500 per year in reimbursement for co-pays, medications, and travel expenses during their child’s battle with cancer. I am honored that she took time to share her journey with Get Up Nation.

Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Richard “Buzz” Bryan and Alejandro Villanueva. Buzz served in the United States Navy as a corpsman and deployed to Iraq with United States Marines. During his service in combat he earned a Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V, Combat Action Ribbon with a Star, Fleet Marine Force Device, and more. His commitment and intensity to serve his country and the Marines he patrolled with was unparalleled. When I spoke with some of the Marines Buzz served with, they did not hesitate to share stories about his maturity, leadership, and dedication that contributed to preserving and saving the lives of Marines in combat during the Global War on Terror. After completing his military service, Buzz continued to serve those who went into harm’s way. The intensity of his commitment to serve veterans led him into a variety of dangerous and interesting circumstances to help ensure that veterans were receiving sufficient and satisfying support. His duties as an outreach coordinator for the VA connected him with a person named Alejandro Villanueva.

Alejandro is a veteran himself. He is a graduate of West Point and completed Infantry, Airborne, and Ranger Schools. He served with the 10th Mountain Division and the First Ranger Battalion. He completed 3 tours of duty in Afghanistan. His actions during combat operations earned him a variety of awards and commendations including a Bronze Star with “V” Device. If you are listening to this and you don’t know the significance of the V attached to this medal, it means Alejandro earned this award by demonstrating heroism or valor in combat. More specifically, Alejandro, who stands 6 feet 9 inches tall rescued wounded soldiers while under enemy fire. And by the way, Alejandro is also the starting left tackle of the Pittsburgh Steelers. My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Marsha Elle. Marsha is a gifted singer-songwriter, speaker, mentor, and model. She was born with a rare birth defect called proximal femoral focal deficiency resulting in the amputation of Marsha’s lower leg. Born in Haiti, she traveled to the United States to receive medical care and received her first prosthesis when she was 5 years old. In response to stares and bullying, she often disguised the prosthesis and didn’t wear shorts until she was 23 years old. Adjustments in her prosthetic during childhood made mobility difficult at times, leading to falls in the school cafeteria. Music became her “release and comfort.” She also attended a summer camp at the age of 16 for teenage amputees. This experience transformed the way she saw her ability and potential. She began to share her music and her journey with others. She defied the idea that there was no room for her in a body-image focused world, removed from her mind defeating perceptions and limits, and now serves as a beacon of light and faith for those who have difficulty with self-acceptance. I can’t wait to explore and share how Marsha transitioned from adversity to what she describes as a “series of triumphs on top of triumphs over time.” From People Magazine to Essence Magazine to the Huffington Post to Jada Pinkett Smith, people are heralding Marsha as an inspiring example of the beauty that happens when we believe in ourselves and refuse to be limited. It was an honor to have Marsha as a guest on the Get Up Nation Podcast! She even shares something during this episode that no one knows about her legendary photo shoot!

Rudy is one of America’s most elite and resilient Special Operations warriors who served as a Recon Marine during the Global War on Terror. Born into extreme poverty, Rudy shares how he defended and protected his brothers from gang influences and the cruelty, death, and violence of the streets during the crack cocaine epidemic in the 1980’s. He shares how his desire to serve the unseen and unheard resulted in his decision to serve in the Marine Corps after seeing how American service members were helping orphans during the Kosovo War. After facing numerous internal challenges which resulted from surviving multiple combat deployments, Rudy now supports veterans in crisis with his Recon Sniper Foundation and works with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the finest marine scientists, and veteran combat divers to save and restore coral reefs at Force Blue Team. I am honored to share this 39th podcast episode with Get Up Nation, where we learn how a person who has endured the most violent and brutal realities in this world helps to heal our oceans, our earth, and ultimately, each other.

Dr. Drury and her team just won the 2018 Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement which was issued by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She and her team are doing revolutionary work when it comes to understanding how stress and adverse childhood experiences impact our lives, even across generations. Her character and intelligence are extremely impressive. I knew I wanted to interview her as soon as I saw her describe how she “couldn’t imagine a better job” than helping children and their families cope with mental illness during some of the most tragic and devastating medical problems children can face. Her kind heart and brilliant mind are invested in easing the suffering families face during adversity. I am honored Dr. Drury took the time to speak with me on the Get Up Nation Podcast.

Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with the amazing Jas Boothe. Jas is an author, entrepreneur, disabled Army Veteran, Cancer Survivor, Innovator, Philanthropist, and Speaker. Prior to deploying to Iraq, her life was significantly impacted by losing everything she owned during Hurricane Katrina and a month later being diagnosed with an aggressive head, neck, and throat cancer. She needed complex full-time medical care, employment, and a place to live with her son. She was advised there were no existing programs for women Veterans with children. After extensive cancer treatment, Jas was allowed to serve in the Army National Guard. Remembering what she and her son had been through when they were in need, Jas committed herself to ensuring that no servicemember would be left behind and that all women Veterans would be treated with the dignity and respect they earned during their service. She founded Final Salute, an organization that has provided more than a million dollars to provide homeless women Veterans with safe and suitable housing. This only scratches the surface of what this amazing human being has accomplished during her life, and I’m honored she’s taken the time to join me.
