The Shofar of Mashiach

The awe-inspiring Niggun of Four Themes[6] is commonly known as "The Alter Rebbe's Niggun." The chassidim of the Alter Rebbe used to call it "The Shofar of Mashiach," because, as they explained, it arouses a yearning for the coming of Mashiach.

The Shofar of Moshiach

A-nim z-mi-rois vi-shi-rim e-roig, ki ei-le-chah naf-shi sa-a-roig. Naf-shi cham-dah bi-tzeil ya-de-chah la-da-as kol roz soi-de-chah.
Translation:
I sing hymns and compose songs because my soul long for you. My soul desires Your shelter to know all Your ways.

This is a melody in two sections, expressing the profound longing of the Jewish soul for its Creator. "I sing hymns and compose songs because my soul long for you. My soul desires Your shelter to know all Your ways." The succeeding verses may also be sung with the same melody.
It was customary for the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, to teach a new melody each year on the holiday of Simchat Torah after the Hakofot or to reintroduce and old melody. The disciples would learn the new melody and sing it at future Chassidic gatherings. This melody of was taught by the Rebbe on Simchat Torah 1961, when he also explained its inner meaning.



Anim Z'miros

Eimosai ko-osi mar l'ch'sheyofutzu mayonoshecho chutzo
Translation:
"When will the Messiah come?" [The Messiah responded:] "When your wells of Torah will overflow to the outside."

In one of his epistles the Baal Shem Tov writes that when his soul ascended to heaven in the year 5507, he approached the palace of Messiah and inquired of him, Eimosai Ko'ose Mar, "When will the Messiah come?" The answer of the Messiah was: "I will come only when your (The Baal Shem Tov's) wells of Torah will overflow to the outside." Thus we are taught that the propagation of the Chassidic teachings and customs is a prerequisite and necessary prelude to the coming of the Messiah. The Lubavitcher Chassidim have adapted a well-known melody to perpetuate the inquiry of the Baal Shem Tov and the reply of the Messiah. This melody is sung frequently in great ecstasy at Chassidic gatherings.



The Footsteps of Moshiach

Dar-ke-cha elo-kei-nu le-ha-a-rich a-pe-cha lo-ra-im ve-la-to-vim ve-hi se-hi-la-se-cha.
Le-ma-an-cha e-lo-kei-nu a-sei ve-lo la-nu re-ei a-mi-da-sei-nu da-lim ve-rei-kim.
Translation:
Our G-d, Thou art forbearing toward the evil and the good; That is Thy praise. For Thy sake, not for ours, grant our request. See how we stand before Thee, humble and lacking in Virtue.

The text is from the High Holiday eve liturgy. The melody brims over with penitence and joy of the spirit. The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, introduced it on the holiday of Simchat Torah of the year 1955.

As in all Nigunim, it should be deeply moving, I wanted this one to be Powerful yet very simplistic. The vocals are comprised of a 3 part harmony. I get some of the inspiration from listening to "Alice in Chains". This is part of my growing and evolution. I wish to write and produce many more songs like this.
