A precursor to Astral Projection, SFX (abbreviation of sound effects), was formed in Israel in 1989 and originally consisted of Avi Nissim and Lior Perlmutter. They released a hit single in 1991 named Monster Mania, which prompted them to start working on an album. Work was halted when they decided to travel to New York and try their luck there. While Avi soon went back home, Lior stayed in the USA and in 1992 released the single JBIE. In 1993, with Lior still in the US, Avi teamed up with Yaniv Haviv and Guy Sabbag and they released the single Another World. In early 1994, Lior returned to Israel to work on his own material with the rest of the members under their new label Trust in Trance. Their album Trust in Trance 2 reached number two on Israel best selling album chart.[3] After this release, Guy decided to leave the group and the remaining members eventually changed their name to Astral Projection. In 1995 they opened their own professional sound studio.[4]
They have produced nine albums, some of them reaching positions on best selling album charts abroad.[5] The most recent album is 'Ten' which was released in 2004. Astral Projection have not released an album since 2004, though they have released several singles since then.
Astral Projection's most well known tracks include hits such as “Kabalah”, “People Can Fly”, “Mahadeva” and “Dancing Galaxy” to name but a few.
Astral Projection's tracks “Open Society”, “The Prophecy”, "One" and "Strange World" were greeted enthusiastically by Goa and Psychedelic trance fans. The release of their EP Open Society was pushed back first from January 2008 to September 2008, then from September 2008 to simply "2009", and then from 2009 to simply "2010". After the September 2008 delay, Astral Projection's website attributed this to a dispute with B.N.E., the label which they originally had agreed to release the album. The EP was finally released by Trust in Trance Records on September 7, 2010.[6]
On February 10, 2010, the New Astral Store opened on Astral Projection's website, making virtually all of their music available for a download fee in mp3 or wav format.
Their new EP, One, was released June 12, 2012 on TIP Records.

8. Spanish Gypsy

Until quite recently I lived the Sierra Guadarrama mountains in Spain for several years where I was exposed to a lot of excellent Flamenco music, which is the music of the Gypsies or Romani. 

Being a guitarist myself I couldn't help but get sucked into figuring out how to play this style on guitar. While I was learning, I was struck by the similarity between Flamenco and North African and Indian music and when I analysed it, I found that they share certain musical scales. (interestingly the Romani were originally a nomadic tribe from northen India that travelled to Europe in the12th century) 

Another musical conjunction was the similarity (to me) between the harmony and rhythm of the opening bars of that quintessentially Spanish dance the Pasa Doble and a lot of Trance built on a gallop rhythm. 

So the original inspirational spark began with the possibility of combining all these musical threads into one piece of music. So, I started by creating the melody on a Flamenco scale, over the rhythm of the Pasa Doble with it's semi-tone harmonic movement and mixed that with certain elements of the older Indian influenced Goa-trance sound, but built it all on a foundation of the big kick and bass from the more modern Psytrance sound. 

Later I dusted off the (steel strung) acoustic and recorded some melodic guitar parts using some newly learned Flamenco licks to emphasis the Gitano flavour. 

The track you hear is the result of this weird musical synthesis of Goa, Psy trance, Flamenco and the Pasa Doble.

4. Dance of The Cosmic Serpent

The title is inspired by anthropologist Jeremy Narby's book " The Cosmic Serpent" in which he suggests among other things that the global network of DNA based life is actually a conscious entity and furthermore that the human mind can enter into communication with this DNA consciousness via trance states, enthogenic experiences etc. and by doing so receive detailed and specific information and wisdom.  (think shamen for example)

The dance of the cosmic serpent in the title refers to the total manifestation of this underlying consciousness via the massive variety of lifeforms on planet Earth including us - human beings.  The total of all lifeforms is the dance, the manifestation of it.

This idea along with an already existing notion of mine to create a track purely based around a strong central melody were combined for this track. I derived the melody from an Arabic sounding scale because to me it sounds kind of wiggley and serpentine and often seems to suggest snake charmer music.

Given that I wanted the tune to be the centre piece I approached the composition in a different manner.  Rather than starting out with the kick and bassline as I often do, instead I sat down with a guitar, decided on the implied harmonic movement ( G major, G# major, F minor) and made sure that I had definitively composed the entire tune before booting up the sequencer. Once I had the melody fixed, I built the track up around it.
