In this article, I’m going to look at Halogen FM and how to create three versatile sounds. Halogen FM makes FM synth patching nice and easy, so I’ll skip the deep theory and focus on making good sounds. Try following along, and download the presets at the end to compare your results.

In this article, I’ll walk you through how I created the intro demo for GForce Bass Station, which I created using a very special pack of presets included with it. The inspiration, as some of you will already hear, is none other than the mighty Tim Harbour of video production company Timmy Shot Me.

The video blew me away when it was released. It’s genius, yet so whimsical and uplifting, and it kept the synth in my head ever since it was released. Considering the limitations of a one-man show, to me it’s probably the most iconic demo video of all time. So it only made sense to take that idea to the next level. A few of the presets were meant to emulate and improve upon Timmy’s idea with a bit of a modern twist

The LFO is one of the most powerful and unique tools in a synthesiser. It stands for Low Frequency Oscillator, and it’s a slow waveform that automatically moves a parameter like pitch or filter cutoff up and down. Most synths have at least one LFO, and learning how to use them creatively can help you create more interesting patches with motion and movement.

In this article, we’ll look at some LFO patching ideas using OB-X, a synth with loads of modulation options, including both a front-panel LFO and deeper per-parameter control via X-LFOs. You can apply these ideas to other synths too, which is a great way to learn a new instrument or plugin.
