We celebrated the life and music of Daniel Johnston on 1/22/23 in concert with a focus on the conversation around mental health. The event was held at Cult Classic in Stevensville, MD & featured local musicians covering Daniel's songs. Carly Winter didn't knock, around 2022 she kicked down the door to the Annapolis music scene & started showing us how it's done. When she performed at my songwriter showcase you could hear a pin drop as the collective jaws of everyone in attendance melted into their dinner plates. I told her about my vision for the 3EGC field recording project & she asked if we could record her new song "Laundry Room" in an actual laundry room. There's such a rich wisdom in her lyrics & confidence in her delivery that I would constantly have to remind myself "hey Aaron, don't text about mixing notes at 11PM, she's got middle school tomorrow." Carly Winter is the real deal y'all!

"Laundry Room" by Carly Winter

On a Southern Skribe run in March 2023 I was invited to be a featured artist on the acclaimed "Open Folk" showcase in beautiful Asheville, NC. When Jackson took the stage & delivered the line "if wishes were fishes my cats would go insane" the whole room chuckled in a way that calmly communicated "FUCKING GENIUS!". The hair on my arms was standing up. He's digging deep into the scary parts of the soul, showing us the ugly stuff he found, & telling us it's ok to laugh & sing along. The pictures he painted in my head resembled a Coen Brothers movie scored by John Prine. Anyways, I walked right up to him and said "I wanna be friends with you!", he said "OK" and we planned on recording the next time I was passing thru AVL. We were both thinking it would be a few months but as fate would have it, I left my merch at my gig and had to swing back thru on my way to Florida a few days later. When I pulled up to Jackson's cabin, he said "when we're done I'll take you to this dank taco place down the street." We set up some mics, hit record, and what you hear is the first take. With Jackson's permission, I added ebow, bass, banjo, and some vocal harmonies.

"My Last Name pt 2" by Jackson Grimm

The first time I ever performed in front of an audience was a high school production called "Rock & Roll Revival" in Severna Park, Maryland. I was hearing a bit of a buzz about the 2023 show so I decided to check it out. The backing band was on point, they were tackling some challenging tunes & I remember thinking "wow, this is much cooler than the revival I was a part of". Then, Nick Stohler jumped down from the band riser & took center stage with his strat. Nick launched into the iconic opening riff of The Pixies' "Where is my Mind" & then proceeded to melt the room. When the song came to a close, Nick threw his pick into the crowd and sternly marched off stage as if to say "I don't have time for this shit". This dude is awesome. After the show, I found Nick in the lobby & told him how much I enjoyed the cover. I gave him a 3EGC sticker & offered up the invitation to do a recording. He handed me an "Ivy League" sticker & said "This is my band" (which also happened to be the backing band for RNRR). I was living in Annapolis at the time & we decided to record their original banger "Roseland Ballroom" in my living room. The energy building this studio track was very collaborative every step of the way. Keep your eye on Ivy League.
