This is my musique concrete piece for laptop musicianship. The concept behind it was to take a full recording of the 5th november fireworks night, include the fireworks, fairground rides, and extensive crowd noise. The original recording was 35 minutes long. I scanned through the recording several times, finding and chopping out tonal and rhythmical elements to identify my theme. From my chosen sounds, i decided to use the fireworks and contrast them with a sound from one of the fairground rides, transforming between them, using the pendular motion of the machine noise to imply groove, finding rhythmical elements within the fireworks to work within roughly the same pendular scheme. The introduction is walking into the fair, using the building crowd and fairground noise along with the overhead tannoy announcement to signify the approach, building to a large swell of the mechanical noise from the rides which at its pinnacle suddenly transforms into a large firework explosion followed by its crowd reaction. Following this i went into a series of firework and crowd rhythms following my pendular theme, return to the mechanic noise periodically to demonstrate the transformation and means for discovering the rhythms. Meanwhile i started to explore the sonic qualities of the fireworks through processes, making flanged and FFT processed instances of certain loops to broaden the spectral palette of the piece. from this i started making longer firework phrases, filtering them and using them as a bridge to the next series of transforms which briefly recapitulates earlier transforms and furthers them. After this the piece moves into the outro which returns to crown noise and applause slowly quietening to finally moving into one final re-reference of the fireworks to close, ending on similar sound texture to the beginning.
