A different take on a song about a girl from an EP I recorded several years prior.  Recorded on the occasion of the girl's marriage to a lucky guy.

Hey There (Marion's Song)

This is kind of a funny one.  I recorded and co-produced this as part of an outfit called "Turntable Subculture" sometime around 2001 with Cameron Vanderzanden.  Last time I saw him, he was DJing electro-breaks at an arcade in my area called Ground Control, and he tried to kick me in the head,

This track started with a simple idea I had for a basic two-step break, but the thing about working with Cam, when I'd send him what I'd been coming up with, he'd usually send back something much more developed and sophisticated,  He had this tendency to mix rather trebly drum loops like here.  I definitely remember the tremolo oscillation on the drums being something he threw in, along with most of the bass notes that carry the bottom end in place of kicks.  The bass was a simple sine LFO running into a gain and  tremolo; that was Cam again, I'd pushed for the sine wave because it doesn't colour the mix, and he dressed it up.

I got back his adjustments and I'd immediately had the idea to add in a lot of things, the little Pac-Man style synth bits on a square wave LFO and the Dr. Dre spoofing section with the hefty drums.  Cam did the early stuff with synths popping up all over the left-right spectrum, but I have to admit I'm at fault for adding the squealing, panning synth with the distortion flavour.  I still like that a lot.

Later on in the song it gets quite techy, but I'm not sure if that was me or Cam.  Come to think of it, probably Cam's doing.  I think he got bored with the standard, steppy beat -- tech-step beats were pretty new at that time, and Cam was a devoted Photek fan.  Of course, I am completely to blame for all the echo and reverb hanging around on the vocal track -- I suppose I really did listen to a load of Renegade Soundwave and Sigue Sigue Sputnik at the time.

I don't really recall that the lyrics are about anything in specific, but I do know I wrote them in a day on the number 5 bus out of Portland.  I can't write a rap or anything these days, but they used to fall out of me when I was failing high school.
