High Frequency FM patch using a prototype custom 200e compatible 258e module.

The patch was fairly complex, but very generally:

258e VCO#2 LFO pulsing a 230e to create a pulse for 266e QRV used to control a mix of 258e VCO#1 pitch. I used a variable waveform output from a 261e Mod VCO ... patched back into the 258e VCO#1 FM input.

Other modules used in this patch (in no particular order): JRB Reverb, 281e, 292e, 227e, 254e, 210e.

Also - NO external efx or compression - straight out of my Buchla, into the console, then into the computer.

This one goes out to all you soggy DJs out there. The selectors and entertainers whose slot is not in sync with mother nature’s winning hand. You look out over a sea of anoraks and subdued faces and wonder if the sun will ever shine again. You look at your beer and wish it was a warm cup of tea. You look down at your coat and realise you’ll never pack your winter wardrobe away for the summer…  

These instances are hard, if not impossible, to imagine as this year’s unlikely heatwave continues to dazzle and frazzle us. But we all know that those rainy day moments do exist. We’ve all played them in the past. We’ve all got many more in the future. And now Darkroom Dubs have the perfect soundtrack for them: Skinnerbox – ‘Music For Sad & Rainy Open Airs’. 

Two tracks tailored for the greyest of outdoor shows. Moody, pensive and vitally atmospheric; both ‘Cold Neck’ and ‘Wet Shoes’ counter and complement any damp DJ set consummately. The former is a lavish, eight-minute saga that ripples with analog weight and shines with sudden cosmic blasts. The sinewy latter extends the trip closer to nine minutes with a wriggling weave of acid and bass before smacking us hard with vibrant solar sensation in the epic breakdown. No matter how treacherous the conditions you play this in are, the sun will always rise.

Cold neck, wet shoes, warm heart: The weather might be an unpredictable beast, but these tracks most certainly guarantee temperate reactions. And let’s face it; this is Skinnerbox and Darkroom Dubs… These guarantee joy regardless of what weather mother nature throws at us. Enjoy!

Skinnerbox - Wet Shoes (Clip)

Some things are just not meant to be, but that doesn't stop them happening anyway, such is the case with Mexican/Canadian punk-techno duo ALI X x XIMENA who unwittingly crossed streams in 2016. In just the past two years the inspired and experienced duo have unleashed a relentless barrage of funky and skewed audio/video bricolage. Their first session together, along with compatriot Theo Magus, produced the single "Let's Get Naked" for Tiga's Turbo label, and what followed was an orgy of remixes for labels Nein and Roam, Bottom Forty, Wonder Stories, Phisica and Shara, and reworks and collabs with artists of weird like-minds Nark, Tkuz, Fausto, Shit, and others both esoteric and mainstream.  
ALI X is no stranger to the impenetrable darks and blinding lights having taken his former band Azari & III from the streets to the limelight, and his own extensive back catalog excessively demonstrates this, while XIMENA's vague history only intensifies the strange murk that enshrouds her, at once both fiercely hermetic and violently sociable, her internalized poetic meanderings clash nicely with her gushing DJ performances. When combined, the couple's punky 'screw-it' attitude juxtaposed with a funky troubled lovers vibe provides for challenging encounters rewarded by unexpected leaps of freedom.

The Welcome To My World EP shows the journeys Ali X x Ximena can take you on, from slugging bouts of confusion and disorder to the heart pounding grit of dark and cavernous dance floors, each track on the album from original to remix shows off the cool and independent techno style of Mexico perfectly.

There is a phrase often told that goes something to the effect of, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That a single thing made up of many others can eclipse them all. Puzzles, or paintings seem to spring to mind immediately. Credit for this phrase goes to the philosopher Aristotle for first uttering that thought a few thousand years ago, among his other accomplishments but I digress. Our ‘whole’, our ‘thing’ for today and for a very long while, is Zendama.

Presented in two parts, Zendama is an eight track compilation compiled by Swiss producer and dj, Ripperton. Zendama, for the curious, means ‘Good person’ in Japanese and is remarkably apt for this body of work. To quote Ripperton when talking about the release, “The common point between all these pieces is that the people who made them are all wonderful humans involved in making good music and keeping a positive spirit.” That spirit is what I believe binds the pieces and elevates this compilation beyond the sum of its ‘parts’. Each track within could very well be a standalone A side. There is no filler, there is no obscure for the sake of. What you do have is 8 tracks balanced incredibly well, in vibe, in detail, that make sense as a whole.

With all of this in mind, the premiere for today is none other than Ripperton himself’s offering on the compilation, Indian tree. Sitting at the end of part one, Indian tree is the embodiment of a feeling of movement twisting through time and space, touched ever so slightly by passing bodies. This movement of soaring pads and leads, coupled with a pattering percussion almost evoke a mental scene of rain falling on an ocean. 

From the emotional highs of Jackmates dub of Rerun, to Mary Yalex’s piercing leads on How U really feel and the cryptic depths of Luminous Black & Emerald, Zendama encompasses a wide realm of simply good music. That almost seems like a dis-service to say but in this case I believe hyperbole isn’t needed. If you enjoyed Indian tree, picking up the rest of the compilation is a must and can be done at bandcamp. We highly recommend it.
