I Like features the mapping of data from dancer Tia Hockey’s personal monologue, which controls the volume of the chords based on the activity of her voice — drawing attention to things happening behind the curtain, invisible systems, algorithms.

“With this piece, the dancers were recording lots of personal monologues about how they felt when using social media. Alex the choreographer suggested exploring the words ‘I like’ as it’s so abundant a term and action online. With a simple momentary recording of this I began crafting a piece, in which melancholic chords would gently be triggered by Tia’s voice, as well as manipulating the words ‘I like.. and they were like..’ with a very chaotic system. I wanted to create a mood that was a weird combination of contentedness, sadness and strangeness.“ — Ryan Lee West

Magical Mistakes releases upcoming LP “Peaking in the Pitch Black” via The Playground Records on the 1st July. Magical Mistakes has already garnered support from the likes of Vice/ Noisey, FACT Mag, CLASH, XLR8R, Earmilk, The Line of Best Fit, BBC and many more. Currently based in Osaka, Japan, Erik runs the small events and boutique label Perfect Touch, working with labels and artists (Leaving Records, Shigeto, Yosi Horikawa, Obey City etc.) on tours and cross cultural creative projects. “Peaking in the Pitch Black” is the first single to be lifted from the LP which will be released on the 20th May. 

Following the path of other artists, like Bon Iver, Magical Mistakes, (a.k.a Erik Luebs) moved to Shiba-san, one of Japan’s most rural villages, to create his sound. Here he was able to draw inspiration from his environment and also from the lineage of contemplative beats crafted by the vibrant community of Osaka artists, such as Shlohmo and Mount Kimbie. It’s clear when listening to Magical Mistakes that his style strives to combine Eastern and Western influences. His tracks are textural, bell-bathed, slow slung electronic compositions blended with organic instrumentation, Japanese motifs, and ambient sounds, that create an immersive underwater effect.

Klavierraum is the place where my piano is, but it’s also a virtual space and spiritual shelter whenever needed – it immediately appears when I am playing piano, floating in sound and resonating with melodies. In my concerts I feel this ‘Raum’ is embracing and covering me, the piano and my whole audience.

Klavierraum, my very first solo piano album, tells a story of arranging a tea time for a rendezvous. Nachher is like a sequel sometime later on – this time it’s about preparing for a surprise morning coffee with my favorite pancake!

For the new album I used previously unpublished material of the original Klavierraum session. Some parts were recorded later on, but in the same setting and similar spirit. – Henning Schmiedt
