GhostlyCast #92 comes from Reggie Dokes, a DJ, producer, and composer considered by DJ Mag to be one of several artists keeping the sound of Detroit alive internationally. His output spans work in film/television and releases with various dance labels, including his own imprint Psychostasia Recordings. "Dokes is equally comfortable producing hip-hop, house and techno but his tracks rarely fall so neatly into such categories, carrying an otherworldliness that's as distinctive as it is difficult to define," says Resident Advisor, for their recent Exchange interview. His Ghostlycast reflects that unbound spirit and respect for the past; the potent mix begins in Chicago and works its way into Detroit, featuring tracks old and new.

This set was recorded at the "Freaks Come Out at Light" party, a free outdoor sunrise rave which started at 4:20 a.m. on Sunday of Detroit's electronic music festival (DEMF) weekend. 

The "Freaks" party, now in its third year, is held in the Lincoln Street Art Park, which sits adjacent to the Recycle Here! compound, Detroit’s only drop-off recycling program. 

The art park is a de-commodified gathering and party space that has been made open and available to the public by Make Art Work, a team of artists and organizers that use creative expression, radical freedom and fear-as-safety to transform places and the way people connect. The art park is filled with trash sculptures, murals, pyrotechnics and dancing humans.  

The "Freaks Come Out at Light" party honors the history of DEMF being free (of cost and marketing) and Detroit’s history of understanding the importance of public space and programs.

This back-to-back set was played by djs Mike Medow and Ryan Spencer, who have both lived in Detroit and been involved in the underground and DIY scene since the mid-2000s. Ryan has played in a bunch of live bands throughout the years and currently throws parties with the production crew Freakish Pleasures. Mike helps run the non-profit Allied Media Projects and the record label Sector 7-G Recordings.

Both play frequently around town. Ryan is at Motor City Wine every Monday for "Monday is the New Monday" and Mike is at Marble Bar every other Wednesday for "Raw ϟ Juice".

Ivy Barkakati is an American DJ/producer based in Barcelona. She
presents the radio show Casa da Crega once a month on dublab.es. Star
Report, her solo debut, was released on Hospital Productions in 2014.
Her track "Mango Sheen" came out on Modern Obscure Music in 2016,
followed by a collaboration with Phran ("Impulse") on Rhythm Control
Barcelona in 2017. This year that same collaboration, this time under
the alias IVAN, sees the release of another track ("Manipulate Me") on
the new Australian label Best Effort.

Evan Michael has played a prominent role in NYC nightlife for over half a decade. Having cut his teeth in programming and promotions at clubs like Cameo Gallery and Good Room, he’s now leading marketing at the newly established Elsewhere venue in Brooklyn. Over the years he’s polished a sound rooted in textural rhythms overlaid with melodic leads and wistful chords, always taking into account the mood and atmosphere of his many nights spent on the dance floor.

Hailing from Indianapolis, Indiana, Lisa Smith has wielded a rapid-fire mixing style since the ’90s, first as DJ Shiva, more recently as Noncompliant. Her new alias nods to the feminist comic book Bitch Planet, in which disobedient women are banished to a bleak prison planet. This spirit of defiance extends to her music, a searing brand of techno inspired by punk and industrial and honed over 20+ years at underground raves across the Midwest as well as recent appearances at Unsound Krakow, De School, Kaiku, and Berghain. Andy Egelhoff is a DJ and photographer based in Brooklyn who performs as SPRKLBB. Currently the resident of Seze Devres’ long-running Kiss & Tell Party, he’s been a fixture of New York’s underground since his time programming affordable queer parties with Ostbahnhof and the sex-positive fetish series High+Tight. For GhostlyCast #79, he offers up a sampling of releases that showcase the hypnotic and cathartic side of the club. The all-vinyl set (save for the unreleased 1800HaightStreet demo) was recorded at the Club Moment afters den in Bushwick. “It’s a mix about elation and collapse, a continuous binary of moments that define a life of dance music.”

Osaka-based producer Yuri Urano lays down the last GhostlyCast of the year. Since 2014, her volatile hybrid style of industrial techno, electro, and minimal UK-bass has been "sending sparks through the spine of Japan’s underground electronic scene," per DJ Mag. She's released some heat in 2018 with esteemed UK label Central Processing Unit (CPU) and her eponymous label YL. Here, Urano arranges tracks from her favorite artists and influences in a relentless 60-minute mix titled in two parts: "Para" (for), a reference to Spain where she first conceived of the mix, and "Ukiyo," a Japanese word with dual meanings referring to "Floating World," a hedonistic cultural era in Japan's Edo-period, and "Sorrowful World," a Buddhist realm of both death and rebirth.

Nark, aka Kevin Kauer, founder of Bottom Forty and Nark Magazine, has devoted his life to dance music and club culture. For the last decade, he's helped cultivate Seattle's queer community, running a kaleidoscope of above and underground nightlife events including party/political movement Dickslap, a series of annual alternative Pride festival weekends, and the programming at Q Nightclub where he served as resident and creative director. For GhostlyCast #81, Nark delivers a marathon mix that serves as an emotional release and celebrates a recent revelation. "This year was about realizing I'm already exactly where I want to be and surrounded by boundless talent and energy here in the Seattle scene," he says. "Over the years of traveling the world and playing all these cool parties and making new friends and colleagues, I've only to come to realize how hard it is for anyone to separate friendship from competition; it puts a heavy emotional toll on so many people in the scene that builds exponentially, and it can really bring you down. For me, making this mix was about representing myself exactly the way I feel, not up to anyone else's standard. It's about letting go of the things I thought I wanted to chase after and instead, being in the present with myself, our scene and the people around me who need and support me as much as I do them."

Rafael Anton Irisarri is a multi-instrumentalist, record producer, mastering engineer and curator living in New York. His story with Ghostly International begins in 2008 with the release of his debut as The Sight Below. He's since worked with the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Terry Riley, and Grouper, and has lent a hand to countless projects orbiting the Ghostly label including albums by Steve Hauschildt, Telefon Tel Aviv, and Lusine. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Irisarri grew up playing in punk and reggae bands before the world of electronic music opened up to him in the 1990s. His GhostlyCast mix, In Blue Rooms, is a tribute to this formative time. He explains, "I'm a product of ambient chill rooms — that's where I'd find myself most comfortable whenever I went to the clubs or attended raves. The mix contains ambient music I first heard in those rooms. You can hear all kinds of styles in this mix – I felt compelled to keep it this way and teleport, through the music, to this very fertile era of music discovery when genres intermingled and had infinite possibility."

Alyssa Auvinen Barrera is a musician and sound engineer who DJs and performs live under the solo alias LDY OSC. Alyssa is also in a band called Artefactos de Dolor (https://soundcloud.com/helic_al); they have a double LP out on March 29th. Currently based in Vienna, she was born on the border of Mexico and grew up in Laredo, Texas. Recorded live at Good Room Brooklyn, her rhythmic and carefully considered GhostlyCast entry illustrates the often overlooked art of warming up the club. She adds, “I started at about 100 bpm and moved up to about 123 bpm. Warming up main rooms can be challenging since people are just arriving, having their first drink, trying to let their day go and settle into the dance floor. It’s important to keep in mind that your job is to leave the floor ready for the headliner. It’s not about getting hands in the air, rather getting people to simply relax into the environment.”

For GhostlyCast #84, producer / vocalist / guitarist Jess Labrador of Chasms assembles some of the music the band was listening to during the making of their latest LP, The Mirage. Released on Felte Records in early 2019, the album finds the LA-via-SF duo pushing their ethereal sound into the murky depths of dub. As such, their guest mix — a potent, hazy sequence titled False Horizon — traverses dub, industrial, '90s classics and recent discoveries with keen attention to mood. "I wanted to include a lot of texture and atmosphere but also rhythm and a hint of melancholy dissonance," says Labrador. "This mix is like a dismantled version of the album experienced through the lens of other artists' songs."

Honoring twenty years of Ghostly in mix format is no small request, but New York-based producer and longtime roster artist Michna has stepped up to the challenge. His 60-minute GhostlyCast set drifts through a static haze of catalog highlights as if each was accessed and processed from memory.  Adrian Yin Michna explains:
“I recently began composing audio parts for a Quadraphonic Sound Bath that I plan to eventually combine with Vinyasa Flow. My current studio chain has been re-wired solely for this purpose. When I took on the task of making a mixtape for Ghostly 20, I thought it would be interesting to take some of my favorite song moments and run those through the chain, then blend them all together for a continuous mix.”

A big 2019 for Ali Berger saw the prolific Pittsburgh-via-Detroit DJ and producer releasing no-frills acid and house bombs on Spectral Sound, Afro Acid, FatCat’s FCR, and his label Trackland Acid Dealerships. He caps the year with an expressive GhostlyCast, made up entirely of new material, recorded live at Sublimate’s 6th-anniversary party. Berger, along with Russell E.L. Butler & Indy Nyles, Love Letters, and Liquid Asset, features on a four-tracker out this week via Sublimate. He also has another 12", Raise//Anxiety, coming December 13th on Southern Belle.

Following his Spectral Sound debut last year, Montreal-based producer Patrick Holland (formerly Project Pablo) returns to our orbit with a GhostlyCast mix traversing ambient, new age, and outsider pop. He sets it up: "Been listening to, and making, a lot of "non-dance" music. So, I recorded the records I've been listening to on the daily while hanging at home. A personal greatest hits from the listening shelf, from my home to yours." Holland has released a handful of tracks in 2020 under his given name and is readying the May release of his new EP, Simstim, via his own Verdicchio Music Publishing.

It's hard not to know Mark Farina's name as an electronic music fan. He's developed a signature blend of house music — dubbed "Mushroom Jazz" — across a series of essential mixtapes since the mid-90s. For GhostlyCast #88, Mark shares a mix of techno and house that speaks to his roots as a Midwestern dance music fan and Gramaphone record shop employee. "Growing up in Chicago in the '80s was a great place to hear new music. As a young teenager going to Wax Trax Records and Medusa's, I bridged from the industrial sounds into house, techno, and acid tracks around 1988. At that time, I went to Detroit with Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka to record as Symbols and Instruments for KMS Records. Chez Damier was head of A & R there. Metroplex was next door and Transmat upstairs from there. Chicago and Detroit had a shared vibe, which I still love."

A Colourful Storm is a record label based in Melbourne, Australia that releases a diverse range of electronic and otherworldly sounds. This GhostlyCast is by label runner Moopie and friend Bayu. Together they have released two compilations: I Won’t Have To Think About You (2017) and Still in my Arms (2020). Made in two different places during the first lockdown in Melbourne, their mix collects old favorites and other music they came across while researching Still In My Arms, spanning unearthed IDM, techno, and indie-pop gems.
