Wherever https://soundcloud.com/genie4 goes, behind her is a trail of mischievous and knowing art. 

One of her many talents is her deep commitment to weaving supportive and nourishing space for other artists. She's one of the brains behind Ngunnawal/Ngambri's beloved sideway and runs the long-standing https://soundcloud.com/orbit0o0 mix and party series renowned for its eclectic taste, creative set design and carefully considered lineups. Some of my best nights of dancing have come under her thoughtful guidance :)

Aside from her behind the scenes work, she's a supremely creative dj and producer always in the know; toeing the line between sharper electronic sounds and more soulful, human selections. Recently, she's been playing live, so someone please book her in!!

She has so kindly put together a mix for the series, which captures her knack for keeping things fresh. As glitched out, textural and tense as it is warm and fluttering as it is emo as it is club ready, genie paints on a real-world pop canvas, alluding to all states of mind. 

Genie's tongue-in-cheek style is never insincere but reminds us to not be too serious (something I suck at - ie this write up)

Chime 20: genie

𓆢 Squid Inc Risotto 𓆢

2 cups arborio rice
1 small onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 bottle dry white wine
1 pint stock (chicken, fish, or vegetable)
1 zucchini, shredded
½ cup pine nuts, lightly toasted
¼ cup chopped fresh mint
½ cup grated parmesan
Salt & pepper
Olive oil

You will notice that this dish does not contain squid, or its ink. 
Squid Inc does eat meat and fish, in small and intentional quantities, but telling you how to cook and serve our mascot felt callous. Our respect for squids is bound to both feelings of awe and of kinship. 

In the kitchen of a house on a coastline, we cook our favorite risotto, fresh and herbaceous with zucchini and mint. The rhythm of cooking risotto works as self-hypnosis. The churning spoon passed between us; the dowsing and ebbing of wine and hot stock, absorbed by the rising, swelling grains; the loud viscosity of melted cheese, glued to the silver walls of the pot. We’ve created a ritual of making this dish together, and on this night, after recording our mix for Secret Sauce, we prepare it for our friends. While clanging pot lits, chopping vegetables, and refilling our wine cups, we wonder about our kin who drift beneath the waves. We imagine a squid glinting in the dimming filtered light, her body a fleck of iridescence in the indigo abyss. 

Pour a generous coating of olive oil in the bottom of a large pot. 
Fry onions and garlic with salt and pepper. When brown, add rice.
Cook rice in olive oil until it toasts to light brown.
Add alternating pours of wine and stock, stirring continuously. Continue until the rice is soft, about 40 minutes. 
Add the shredded zucchini, continue to stir for 5 more minutes.
Add shredded cheese, fresh mint, and pine nuts, and stir until incorporated. 
Serve generously.

Secret Sauce 13 - Squid Inc

@Otodojo (marokariya.info) is an audiovisual artist who explores sensing within the natural world, reflections of its change, and presence. With contributions to 19 releases and several digital art collections, they are approaching a sound and vision for interpreting environments they visit and embodying the translation of 'otodojo', a sound place for learning.

Labels they have released with include The Bunker NY, Acid Camp, Mint Tea, Mesma Records, Unimatrix Zero, Truncate, and their affiliated collective Microtones that they started in 2018 (microtones.info).
They have also contributed sound to the Oscar nominated animated short film Penglai (2022). 

As an audiovisual artist they have shown works with Cranbrook Art Museum (2022), RED° Tokyo Tower (2022), Otodojo Nodes (2022), Artists for Plants (2021), The Soil Factory (2021), and various promotions for dance events.

They have a doctoral degree in chemistry & chemical biology where they discovered a variety of molecules from nature. They have pivoted from academia but remain an educator by creating tutorials for visual and sound software.
