The first in a series of mixes dedicated to exploring the rich heritage of what music journalist Simon Reynolds dubbed the 'hardcore continuum', a musical evolution that charted a course from early hardcore and rave, then onto jungle, drum & bass, UK garage, broken beat, grime, dubstep, UK funky, footwork/juke and beyond.

For this mix, the focus is on a period where the dubstep sound began to diversify, where a clear Detroit techno influence could be heard. As dubstep began gaining commercial attention and with more of an emphasis on mid-range blare, a lot of producers sought solace in the melodic and the hypnotic, leading to what some termed post-dubstep and then the more generalised term of UK bass.
