Tiohtià:ke / Montreal musician and community organizer Stefan Christoff has featured on this site many times over the last decade, including in his collaborations with Sam Shalabi, with his brother Jordan Christoff (as Anarchist Mountains), and with Nick Schofield (as rêves sonores).  He’s also produced mixes for us as well, both solo and with Jordan, often highlighting his extended network of activist musicians based in Montreal and around the world. Julia E. Dyck is a musician who splits her time between Brussels and Tiohtià:ke / Montreal, as well  as member of the collective which co-hosts the long-running community radio program ffiles (fka XX Files). The two have joined forces for their debut release, A Silver Moon X, out now on Aural Canyon records in Texas. To celebrate the release, the duo have created this special mix for A CLOSER LISTEN that features some work from their album and also works by friends and artists they enjoy.

A SILVER MOON X is about fantasy and storytelling, about the imaginary in the real, an experiment with sound and work to create space for reflection within the chaos of life. The record is a collaboration that was born at CKUT 90.3FM in Montréal. Thank you for listening !

This mix draws from a live recording of the Silver Moon X album launch that took place at the Mercerie performance space in Brussels, Belgium in October 2023. For this set I mixed in excerpts from the live set with Julia E. Dyck and also an opening ambient set by Jean Grünewald (Ottoman Grüw). For the live set in Brussels, which you hear, Julia and I played a Moog synthesizer, bells, while also reading texts from our first album, I also incorporated synth created by my brother Jordan Christoff. For this radio mix I included tracks created by friends around the world and shared over recent months, including many artists that I have collaborated with for broadcasts on Radio AlHara in Palestine, or around community arts initiatives in Montreal. Also I included a couple of tracks that were just excellent. Thank you for listening. – Stefan Christoff.

Silver Moon X - mix

SILVER MOON X mix, Sept. 2024

This mix draws from the first live performance in Montréal by SILVER MOON X that took place at Casa del Popolo on May 19, 2024. The duet project by Julia E. Dyck and Stefan Christoff is a creative collaboration aimed at exploring sound as an opportunity to engage with fantasy and storytelling. For the live performance in Montreal experimental filmmaker Guillaume Vallée created projections, Guillaume’s work accompanies this mix as the artwork. Julia recorded the live set in Montreal. 

This soundscape mix travels from the live show to recorded collaborations that Stefan drew from, including works by Anarchist Mountains, a piano recording, dream reflections and also field recordings. Also we hear an extended excerpt of a live performance by Julia that was given in Brussels in 2023. 

This mix was broadcast on Radio AlHara, Sept. 17 5pm eastern time / midnight in Palestine / 11pm in Brussels

Introduction to Somnambulism is a concept album drawing from transcendent wellness practices and using sound, vibrations, waves and the voice as important levers of healing. The album follows the structure of a hypnosis session - from a breathwork track that calms the vagus nerve when syncing the chimes with the breath, to a hypnotic induction and through the healing frequencies of tuning forks towards a psychedelic visualization.

Julia E. Dyck is a Brussels based artist. Julia’s relational and speculative practice explores the possible connections between the body, (sub)consciousness & technology through performance, composition, installation and transmission. Trained as a hypnotherapist, Julia creates experiences of collective transformation and somnambulism with a focus on the sonic.

Dyck’s practice includes her own modes of transmission and dissemination, such as the monthly hypnosis sessions with live sound she conducts in her Brussels studio with Diana Duta, the lecture-meditations she offers, and the personalized sound prescriptions made up of poetry, sound creations, binaural beats and ASMR that she produces with the Audio Placebo Plaza collective (with Erin Gee and Vivian Li). Her work has been presented internationally at the Karachi Biennale, Bétonsalon, Paris, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Cafe OTO, London, Q-O2, Brussels, Palais des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Musée d’art de Joliette, Canada, Musées d'art et d'histoire de Genève, Darling Fonderie, Montréal, among others.

Le « sonal vigilance lacune » est en fait un mélange entre des bruits de grillons et ceux rappelant un sonar. L’idée de ce bip est d’attirer l’attention au sol dans les stations en courbe forte (ce qui est le cas d’Etoile, Bastille, Nation sur la 1). Le bruit d’alerte seul (les bips) étaient considérés comme trop fonctionnels ou répétitifs. Pour ajouter de l’originalité, une singularité et capter davantage l’attention par un effet de surprise, il fut décidé de le mixer avec un son complémentaire pouvant suggérer le sol, avec l’idée de ne pas faire un son d’alerte au sens dramatique du terme. Le bruit de grillon a été choisi car c’est un clin d’œil aux grillons du métro que l’on pouvait trouver sur les voies du métro dans le secteur Opéra, où l’humidité et la chaleur dans cette zone leur offrait un terrain propice. Un séquencement spécial a été créé afin de ne pas avoir de boucle répétitive, surtout si le temps de stationnement en station est plus long !
