The memory I have sonically meandered to is my oldest, occurring during a typecast excursion of my youth, a trip to the janky British seaside. Classic components: crap caravans, faux-extravagant arcades, flickering decrepit coloured bulb lights, and trash bassline music booming from rides, merging with the symphony of rattling bolts resonating from within. This was an illustrious time.

By the early 2000’s these places were already far removed from their former glory, an ongoing dereliction. The memory pivots around the top tier stratum of nostalgic connection, the “wrinklies” (aka nan and grandad aka rita & peter aka reet & pete) when we had a -mega- day out to a glow in the dark bowling alley. Imprinted in my cortex is the gutter rails, glistening and causing retina flare as bowling balls bounce off them, glinting from the UV paint. The coarse smoke curdled laughter of my nan, my grandad’s impeccable bowling technique… 

"Reminiscing is an avid pastime, and when with the family tales are told oft, a kind of shared familial history. One time when jovial with my mum I casually referred: 
“oH yEah liKe thAt TiMe wE weNt bOwliNg w/ naN n gRandad!”, to which she replied:
*“what r u talking bout, u weren’t even born”*."

Grounding cable slipped, static buzz;, with one loose thread being pulled, then twizzled round the cosmic pinky. A memory in stasis, firmly here but never there. A lost memory of a lost place. This mix aims to focus on that process, the loose cerebral realm of transfixed wooze, the upper spot, where reminisces develop frays, and your grounded truth becomes an abstraction. "This mix is a validation note to my former self who was in the middle of a grief-stricken period of not being able to sleep. I had only slept a couple hours over the course of 3 days because of a traumatic experience I was living through at the time. I desperately needed to put my strung out mind to rest. In that time, I battled with undulating waves of tension and relief. Cycles of gently soothing myself only to find out hours have passed with no solace and then moving to self-destructive frustration.  

The shape of my memory is not uniform. It is raw. It is soft & comforting. It is sharp & painful. This mix captures the agonizing pattern of tension & self-soothing through experimental and ambient leaning sounds. I hope you open yourself up to all types of feeling as you listen.

Fragmentation and Union on the Search for Utopia


It is not Utopia that we strive for. It is not reaching a “destination”, as Utopia is no place. It is the search for Utopia. Upon the water, the boat floats. We are in charge of the sails, and we decide which direction we move toward. On this journey, no one said it would be easy. Choppy waters and going forward into the unknown darkness of night. Yet, the stars shine, as does the moon. And from above, there is light. And when hours pass and the sunlight breaks, it simply illuminates. Simultaneously this light casts shadows on the placid watery plane. We need both on this search ~ both night and day. Symbiosis leads to quantum leaps. On this search for no place, memories arise, and with them we move ahead in awareness. Memories fragmented and fractal, morphing and merging and changing with the tides. They gather along the way into a collection of dark and shiny pieces of us. Some we choose to keep. Some we choose to free. We honor them all, for without them we would not be here, right now. On the boat. On this search. Shaping new memories as we float. The Utopian heartbeat thumps to the rhythm of just one sound. Do you hear it? Love is calling.

"somewhere over the rainbow, there is a place we can go to do magic. it’s a land of abundance where we tranifest our dreams—yet we bring our nightmares with us. in loopy quests for healing, power, and pussy, we tromp up and down a steep mountainside bearing amulets, wands, and shields. on moonlit nights, shadows reach out from our wakes, but vanish as soon as we turn around to look. 



this mix is inspired by a night on that land, taking refuge from a storm and wayward psychic energies with three queer children in a bathhouse. we fed logs to the stove in a wood-fired sauna as outside, muffled thunder seeped from clouds sparkling with electricity. i felt myself channeling Hera, adopting Zeus’s ephebes—young, effeminate cupbearers. one carried water, the other a staff, and the third was keeper of the Pan flute, an eternally hitting vape; the gift that keeps us living. 



staying lifted, surfing currents of our whims, we fanned the flames of a bonfire outside that persisted to spite the rain, until one of the children whispered “hold me,” or rather demanded “cuddle puddle.” we traipsed up to the cabin, where with beaver-like instincts, i heaped blankets and pillows on the wood floor to make a dam that held back time. the kids nuzzled in purring satisfaction. an oil lamp on the hearth illuminated offerings of tinctures, balms, and spiked Mountain Dew. i puffed the vape while i scratched the kids’ backs, admiring the sacredness of youth. 



for those few hours we were all nineteen, re-writing our stories with chosen family and striving to not re-inscribe the wounds inflicted by our blood. we needed to not give a fuck about anything except blowing on each other’s simmering coals. both dreams and nightmares can keep one from sleep; i know this from experience. so nothing could sate me like watching chests rise and fall in slow rhythms, as each of Hera’s children faded into gentle sleep.

When I was thinking about this mix, my mind went to my iTunes/Apple Music library, which I’ve used actively since 2006, almost half my life. I remember sitting in a Los Angeles apartment back then, ripping CDs, rating the tracks I felt something for.

Now, scrolling back through songs I’ve loved feels like spinning a radio dial across my life, scanning through flashbulb memories. The music transports me to the state of mind I was in when I listened, however many years ago, but with the added perspective you get from seeing those moments concertina’d up. I can make out the shape of narrative arcs; follow threads that I thought in the moment I had lost; see where I was and know where I would go.

I tried to recreate that feeling with this mix: drawing tracks from across the span of my music library, outlining an emotional current that ebbs and flows through the music I resonate with. It’s tough to put into words (thankfully easier to put into a mix). It’s a sonic representation of an emotional journey that I’m still on. Sometimes I feel like it’s hard to know myself clearly, but I shouldn’t feel that way. I know my innermost self well, and maybe the journey is learning to trust that more.

"When I was four years old my parents’ friends brought their six-year-old nephew to a church potluck. He and I played together for a few hours in the church gymnasium. This was the first and only time we met. While we played together I felt an emotion I have never experienced again, and have never been able to explain well with words. A very rough approximation of the emotion would be to think of all the people you have ever been close with whom you will never speak to again. Take the way that thought makes you feel with the feeling of being lovesick, or the kind of crush that makes your sternum ache.

For most of my childhood my greatest fear was becoming close to someone and then never seeing them again. I think this was the first time it ever happened to me.


My memory of this emotion is one of my strongest memories, still visceral  when summoned. I have wondered ever since if I will feel it again, and quietly kept one eye on my heart.



I also wonder if recalling the memory of this emotion so many times has completely altered the memory from the original experience, so that at this point I am waiting to feel again something I never actually felt. 


This mix is an attempt to describe an emotion I can’t describe well with words. It is also an attempt to record my current recollection of this emotion; a memento for future comparison."

“The core memory I referenced for this mix comes from the emotional and physical journey I took when I found out my mom was dying. I had been in Berlin for less than 24 hours and had to immediately fly back to the states to say goodbye. 

The physical process of being at the airport and getting on the plane was so arduous. I ended up just disassociating. I found myself trapped in a physical and mental liminal space. And the only thought playing in my mind was “Will I make it home in time?” 

Everything around me and inside me felt spaced apart, and configured in a way that was unreal and untouchable. I didn’t feel like alive, nothing felt real, not even my feelings or what was physically happening to me. I was simply just existing, feeling nothing and everything all at once. 

This is a really raw and deeply personal memory for me. Until I started working on this mix, I don’t think I had ever fully processed what I went through.”

"Lately, I have been grappling with the feeling that growing up and living an “adult” life has locked us into repeated sequence of obligations and hedonism, manifesting itself into a cyclical pattern of sustain and release. In this perpetual need to seek pleasure in order counter a feeling of confinement, I had forgotten what real playfulness was. I left work early one day and called my longest time friend and asked if she wanted to catch the sunset at the beach. We found ourselves running towards the shore, laughing, breathless, wind in our faces, sand whirling around us from the heavy evening gusts. In this mix I hope to recover that sense of possibility, curiosity, and attraction to mystery that I had as little girl. I found myself thinking of the garden of my home, a place where I created new worlds out of the space, and never felt confined to a pattern or path, and recalled the bright smells of plants, our stream, the sun on the wildflowers. I wanted to capture this freshness, as well as the freedom not to need much other than what was already there, while still expressing the reflective, unstructured, and often opaque feelings that come with growing up.


Why I chose these tracks:

I chose these tracks because they evoked a combination of feelings and sounds I associate with an inquisitive, exploratory part of my youth, a phase I recognize to subconsciously come back to, yearn for, and create anew in music: Sounds of rustling, soft piano, water on leaves, ambient textures which break apart and reform to new wholeness that are unafraid of exposing streaks of melancholy. These sounds are a combination of track discoveries old and new,  through myself and individuals close to my heart who have given new meaning to my memories. The tracks have delicate, yet off-kilter elements: Through the the glitch elements and bells layered over soundscapes throughout, I attempt to form a patient groove which does not know anxiety or censorship. It does not yearn to explicate or create a perfect balance, but rather explore without judgement. The linear tracks I chose have melodies which arise subtly, slowly, and sound like they are coming from far away, containing the distinct promise of something. For listeners, I hoped to create a spacious cove where there is room to be vulnerable and also dream a little on your own. "

In this episode, I reflect a moment I had last summer, late August. I was sitting with a new friend, up on a raised wooden platform late at night, the second day of Waking Life. We had talked at length, having just begun to understand the ebbs and flows of each other’s minds. I told them that lately I had been holding onto moments of unresolved conflict, of goodbyes that felt rushed, or pains of others I was unable to heal. I was carrying the weight of these small, broken up moments which had accumulated over time.

A thick, dreamlike fog rolled in front of us, as we sat, holding each other tightly, It suddenly parted, revealing the outlines of graceful figures moving towards us in the distance. This vision coincided with a moment of precise clarity: I noticed my idealistic need for harmony in every moment; at the influx of this realization, I began to accept and lean into the dissonance that repeats itself, in spite of this desire. I tried to forgive myself for the lack of closure of past connections, the loose ends.

I realize I felt this because I deeply cared about each moment, and this is natural, human, and essential to who I am. The anxiety and subtle shards of pain I had been clutching in my chest for so long burst out of me, leaving me transparent, spacious, and light. I was filled with gratitude to have had the possibility to be heard, and seen, in this realization, by a person who I felt intrinsically understood me.

In this first transmission, I wished to guide listeners through a moment I experienced in which a long-existing emotional weight left me, feeling swept away by the space around me. Through this, the previously hazy details of my inner self came into my field of vision.

Ragas, Reinterpreted

When I first started writing this album, I started with the intention of taking my hindustani classical roots and giving it a new home, a new skin, a new soul. I’ve been deeply entranced by this idea of taking ragas and transforming them into something others can understand. In many ways, a lot of my work is aiming to make this artform more accessible, more understood, more appreciated. 

My music is all inspired by the ragas I grew up singing. Sometimes it’s intentional, where I’ll start with a raga and compose within its compositional rules. Some other times, I’ll just let my voice take me to an alternative place, where my muscle memory would kick in resulting in stuff that just comes pouring out in all these different scales. 

Intuitively my compositional styles navigated towards what they had always been for my whole life, only this time with different instruments. How can I make my synth a sitar? 

This is an album about being vulnerable with what you hear, about being open to coalescing different worlds into each other in a way that might not be done before. I have a diversity of sounds here - works that are more slow, strange, experimental, emotional and durational, to works that are more fast, expected, melodic, lush, and physical. 

All these songs, are ragas reinterpreted. 

I Feel Incomplete is inspired by Raag Bhairav

Is It Love is inspired by Raag Bihag 

In addition to the hindustani classical, there is some experimentation with western classical concepts like harmonization, which does not exist in hindustani music at all. 

I didn’t always follow the rules of the ragas, I’m sure those who know this art can hear that, and maybe purists won't approve. But, I do not call this pure hindustani classical. Instead, this is a strange twisted 21st century interpretation of an ancient artistic practice - personally rejuvenated under the influence of many musical movements that are thriving worldwide that didn’t necessarily originate in India. My instrumentation includes my modular synths (the only instrument besides my voice that I've truly feel one with), my voice, my digitakt, and a lot of samples of the world that have been created and curated with care.

The anchor of this mix is a recollection of a moment from sometime in September 2017. I'd left my job and begun traveling abroad for several weeks. Almost a full month into my trip, I was visiting some friends in Australia, in Far North Queensland. We spent four or so days walking around a cute little resort town tucked between the beach and sprawling mountains covered in deep jungle. 

One morning during my stay I crept out of the house early and walked by myself along the beach and out to the end of a long pier extending eastward over the Pacific. As I stood and looked out at some islands balanced delicately on the horizon, and then back towards the dark green slopes jutting upwards behind the facade of the town, I was overcome with the idea that this was just about as far as I could possibly be from where I grew up in Michigan. I have long fixated on the feeling of being "far from home;" even now as I approach five years living in LA I still often find myself pausing to soak in the fact that I'm really *all the way over here* as if I need to bottle up the sensation to make sure I don't forget it. 

But here it was in full force, that feeling totally distilled and concentrated in a way that could never again be matched, leaving me rapt in silence as sunburnt Ozzies milled around me. It felt triumphant but not final, as though I had completed a journey outwards and could now work out my path back, rediscovering what I'd skipped or discarded along the way.

In the shimmering sunlight the city was a transparent lake, but as the sun crept down the city dissolved into a veiling grey horizon. I remember the faint remoteness as I stared out to my hometown of Los Angeles. I had recently moved back home and had expected for the rush of nostalgia to bloom into a previous self. However, there was instead a stillness that seemed to be waiting for something. The rolling hills before me arched up and down but only seemed to descend. The moments that followed dilated around me and I took solace in knowing that I was truly happy again.

This progression of music tries to embody the slowed and slurred first moments of my days rediscovering Los Angeles and the unintentional ebb and sway of finding myself again. A gradually looping state of lethargy breaks out into its own speed and dance.

as we become temporally removed from moments in life, our memories of these events fade. details morph and evaporate, the once-vivid colors, sounds, and experiences increasingly washed out and out of reach. is that conversation or that dance truly remembered? or is it an unconscious invention of the mind intended to maintain a ‘complete’ memory?
this human capacity to misremember and to subconsciously reinvent memories has long enthralled me, and this mix is an exploration of such phenomena. rooted in three environments i inhabited two summers past – the parks in and around berlin, my flat in moabit, and late-night u-bahn rides to and from dancefloors – this assortment of tracks aims to encapsulate both my concrete recollections and my hazy half-notions of the events that transpired therein. imbued (i hope) with an awareness of the mystery of misremembrance, it is an ode to the people and places that made that summer so formative and liberating.

When I was 11, my dad and I took a summer road trip through Idaho and Montana.
While driving through the mountains, we came to such an elevation that even in the
middle of July, a snowfall began. We stopped the truck at a small lake along the road
as the large flakes gracefully descended. From here, we watched as the snow landed
and evaporated into a thin mist resting on the surface of the water - transfixed by the
strangeness and stillness of the moment. As I journey back through memory, I am
transported to a vision of him standing by the water, camera in hand, quietly observing
the moment.

I spent a lot of hours planning, scrapping and replanning, scrapping and replanning, I ran through a few different idea, etc. In general, it’s hard af for me to make mixes anymore. I think too much about it and wind up hating everything I think of and just never finish. Was worried I’d do the same thing. I even changed this three nights in a row as I’d try to record, feel something was off, switch stuff around. But shit is harder lately because I’ve been going through a lot, but I tried to channel those feelings into a response per your prompt.

So this mix is a response to hunger, a weird hunger I’ve been feeling lately that no matter what I eat, I still feel. Like I just have no clue what I’m hungry for. I’ll fill up but still crave something and just...wish I knew what it was so I could get rid of it. Officially I’m calling the mix “Hunger; or how I’m struggling in every way to care about anything in the face of heartbreak but nothing I eat satiates an unknown desire.” It’s meant to feel sad but not hopeless (actually hopeful), lonely, pensive, and reflective.

As a child, I always played in the woods behind my house. One of my favorite things to do was making “Nature Soup,” a special concoction of leaves, dirt, rocks, sticks, flowers, and anything else that caught my eye in the woods. I would arrange the pretty pieces of nature just as a chef arranges a dish of food (although it was on an upturned frisbee rather than a plate). I would bring the finished Nature Soup to my mom and my brother, and they would always pretend to eat it and go “mmmmm, so yummy!” 
To this day, this memory resurfaces often. I think these nascent moments hinted at my passions for cooking & growing food as well as my lifelong love for nature. It’s funny how much meaning there can be in seemingly silly childsplay. Touching on a wide range of genres from dub house to glitchy electro to hard techno, I aimed to curate sonic textures that paint the forest. The fresh smells, the surprising feelings of Earth in my hands, and even the gritty taste when I dared to take a bite of my Nature Soup. There’s nothing quite like the infinite variety, beauty, and mystery within the woods. <3 
To further illustrate this memory, here is a photo album that I shot using a disposable camera in 2014. I wrote captions on the back of each photo as well, narrating a family of ducks walking through some good old Indiana woods. I didn’t know it at the time, but now I see it’s something of a self portrait of the disparate parts of myself getting along with each other while on a lovely meandering hike.

[00:00 - 01:30] Amidst the sensory turbulence of leaving the rave—strobes still flashing behind closed  eyes, ears ringing, bodies exhausted but minds racing—a sense of peace, warm as the morning sun, bathes  us in its light. 
[01:30 - 05:30] The transition begets a moment of contented reflection, and reminds us that we are in fact,  living life to its fullest; that there isn't anything we'd rather be doing than this. 
[05:30 - 09:00] The sun rises over LA as we float the 10 in our uber home—the after afters—sweat  soaked shirts wicking into the finely upholstered seat, eagerly awaiting our return. 
[09:00 - 16:00] We arrive, peel off our clothes, rinse off the 15 hours of salty grime we danced 10,000+  steps to earn, and enter the soft cocoon of our pajamas, reborn. Somewhere in this fluffy haze, it becomes  apparent that though our exhausted bodies have left the sweaty floor, our spirits continue to pulsate in the  shape of its memory. 
[16:00 - 21:00] So we double down, make tea with a sprinkle of sugar, and reenter the undulating void,  USB sticks in hand. 
[21:00 - 70:00] The tea brings life to our bare feet as they bounce together on the carpet. Our movements  create a new world, reminiscent of the one we left but constrained to the ethereal remains of our capacity  to go on any longer. 
[70:00 - End] Eventually our bodies’ exhaustion overtakes, and we guide our gentle float back down to  earth, and finally, to sleep. 
These journeys, with their ebbs and flows, are what shape the memories after the afters, and make them,  well, ours.

Writing endlessly about the period that this mix represents, the first 4 or 5 months of 2019, or even the attempt to autobiographically collect and order my emotions and memories about the events leading up to it into a winding narrative text, would, I think ultimately prove useless. Nevertheless, couple of days ago, I started to make a list of the different emotions that I associate with the different moments expressed in this mix – loneliness, new love, euphoria, sadness, apathy, self-hate, childlike excitement, confidence, destitution, betrayal, utter confusion, hope – and realized pretty quickly that if I could identify 13 emotions that represent the experiences lived during this time period, I could just as easily choose 130 and still not come close to accurately representing the totality of my lived experience. 

This progression of songs does accurately reflect the experiences, emotions, and moments that I lived in the order that they occurred, or at least how they exist in my memory. Yet their strength lies in a total, visceral statement which ultimately cannot be reliably broken down into individual, definable elements. The attempt to reduce and analyze specific moments referenced here would unduly divorce the associations from the context that defines them inside of me and dilute the power which they collectively exhibit, a swirling mass of feelings, memory scraps, and affective experiences that language is unable to force into submission. In conceptualizing and recording this mix, though, I was able to gain a better understanding of how my own personal processes of renewal and recontextualization have created and stored the individual meanings attached to each song I chose ... Honestly, emotions still confuse me. 

I am honored for being trusted with the opportunity to share this personal narrative in its full capacity with you, a retrospective snapshot of the moment when I began to discern and value myself as an individual entity who deserves, who has the ability, to exist separately from the constructs of identity and the interpersonal relationships which had defined my environment up to that point.
