Fragmentation and Union on the Search for Utopia


It is not Utopia that we strive for. It is not reaching a “destination”, as Utopia is no place. It is the search for Utopia. Upon the water, the boat floats. We are in charge of the sails, and we decide which direction we move toward. On this journey, no one said it would be easy. Choppy waters and going forward into the unknown darkness of night. Yet, the stars shine, as does the moon. And from above, there is light. And when hours pass and the sunlight breaks, it simply illuminates. Simultaneously this light casts shadows on the placid watery plane. We need both on this search ~ both night and day. Symbiosis leads to quantum leaps. On this search for no place, memories arise, and with them we move ahead in awareness. Memories fragmented and fractal, morphing and merging and changing with the tides. They gather along the way into a collection of dark and shiny pieces of us. Some we choose to keep. Some we choose to free. We honor them all, for without them we would not be here, right now. On the boat. On this search. Shaping new memories as we float. The Utopian heartbeat thumps to the rhythm of just one sound. Do you hear it? Love is calling.

Marco Weibel is the epitome of modesty. Over the past decade, the New York artist has quietly amassed a loyal following through expansive DJ sets that touch on everything from spiritual jazz to disco, but rather than credit himself, he lets the tunes speak for themselves. This humble attitude has won him the respect of veterans such as Lefto, as well as a growing fanbase from all corners of the musical spectrum.

When he's not DJing, Weibel curates nights at various New York venues and co-runs Darker Than Wax, a label based out of Singapore (where he was born and raised). His selections showcase rhythm and texture over drops, but he always has an arsenal of radiant house cuts or UK garage to fire up a crowd. Cavernous crates aside, the cadence of his sets is perhaps their most distinguishing feature. On his weekly shows at Lot Radio, Hawaiian funk is followed by broken beat while at the club, 2-step spills into dembow techno and rich amapiano.

While his mixes and performances usually start out on the melodic side, his RA Podcast switches things up. Unleashing a whirlwind of jungle before moving onto '90s-flavored house and other loopy styles, his session highlights local talents with plenty of delightful transitions throughout. Peter Brown's spacey soul flows into Aquarian's pulverising breaks, Ayesha's percussive techno precedes heart-tugging house and heavy dub morphs into Kerri Chandler's acid. Fluid and rolling, this is a true digger's delight.

"somewhere over the rainbow, there is a place we can go to do magic. it’s a land of abundance where we tranifest our dreams—yet we bring our nightmares with us. in loopy quests for healing, power, and pussy, we tromp up and down a steep mountainside bearing amulets, wands, and shields. on moonlit nights, shadows reach out from our wakes, but vanish as soon as we turn around to look. 



this mix is inspired by a night on that land, taking refuge from a storm and wayward psychic energies with three queer children in a bathhouse. we fed logs to the stove in a wood-fired sauna as outside, muffled thunder seeped from clouds sparkling with electricity. i felt myself channeling Hera, adopting Zeus’s ephebes—young, effeminate cupbearers. one carried water, the other a staff, and the third was keeper of the Pan flute, an eternally hitting vape; the gift that keeps us living. 



staying lifted, surfing currents of our whims, we fanned the flames of a bonfire outside that persisted to spite the rain, until one of the children whispered “hold me,” or rather demanded “cuddle puddle.” we traipsed up to the cabin, where with beaver-like instincts, i heaped blankets and pillows on the wood floor to make a dam that held back time. the kids nuzzled in purring satisfaction. an oil lamp on the hearth illuminated offerings of tinctures, balms, and spiked Mountain Dew. i puffed the vape while i scratched the kids’ backs, admiring the sacredness of youth. 



for those few hours we were all nineteen, re-writing our stories with chosen family and striving to not re-inscribe the wounds inflicted by our blood. we needed to not give a fuck about anything except blowing on each other’s simmering coals. both dreams and nightmares can keep one from sleep; i know this from experience. so nothing could sate me like watching chests rise and fall in slow rhythms, as each of Hera’s children faded into gentle sleep.

@livwutang has really arrived on the world stage in the last year. The Seattle-raised, NYC-based artist came up through DIY raves and pirate radio and is now a regular at cult clubs and festivals across North America, as well as being booked in for next year's Dekmantel Selectors. Her sound freely moves between dub, Central and West Africa rhythms and a history of Black American music. All this comes out in her widescreen sets, her curation of the Eto Ano label and her hosting of their show on The Lot Radio.  

The confidence of her selections and ability to shift through moods from the serene to the deep, the energetic to the melodic is evident in this week's mix. It slowly works through the gears from dubbed-out depths to buoyant club rhythms via tribal techno. There is an ever-present mysticism and spirituality that adds an extra layer of intrigue to the body-popping rhythms and it's that which will keep you coming back for more.
