In this podcast, the GIA Support for Individual Artist Committee co-chairs Ce Scott-Fitts, artist development director, South Carolina Arts Commission and Celeste Smith, senior program officer, Arts and Culture, The Pittsburgh Foundation will give you a snapshot of what the committee has been working on, and what you can look forward to for this year. You will also receive a sneak peak into the committee’s theme for 2022, mental health and health care for artists. He will share his insights on the topic of health care for artists, and he will reinforce a much-needed perspective around how we value and support artists.

Grantmakers in the Arts is participating in the Racial Equity Coding Project, which was kicked off with a culmination of research led by Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) with Callahan Consulting for the Arts (CCA). The project has given funders an opportunity to examine and refine their own coding practices and to consider new data collection measures for the future.
In the second episode of this three-part series, we are glad to be joined by Eleanor Savage, program director, Jerome Foundation and Tiffany Wilhelm, program officer/operations, Opportunity Fund. They discuss their experience with the Racial Equity Coding Project’s “By, For, and About” Framework, and the importance of including nuance in the process. Podcast #38: The Racial Equity Coding Project: The Necessity of Nuance

In this podcast, we are revisiting the 2022 Individual Artist preconference, The Year of Our Lorde. Taking place on October 9, 2022, funders in support of individual artists travelled from across the country to convene at Gibney Dance Studio in New York City. Their goal was to discuss the needs of individual artists and how funders can support them better in the context of mental health and wellness. They asked themselves whether mental health and healthcare is a priority in funding, and whether the philanthropic sector is overlooking the needs of, and/or romanticizing, the struggle of artists.
We are joined by Lillian Osei-Boateng, program manager, Arts, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, GIA Support for Individual Artists Committee member and lead hive organizer, and Lauren Ree Slone, director of grants and research at the MAP Fund, GIA Support for Individual Artists Committee member and Committee co-chair. They will provide a recap of the day, some of their hot-takes, and what they hope you will continue engaging in dialogue around.

We are glad to kick off a series of artist-led conversations around this topic. We asked all of the artists the question, “how can the intersection of arts and technology contribute to a racially just future, and what do funders need to know?” and we are glad to share this series of artist talks.

Podcast #43: Arts + Tech: Artists Respond ft. Yamilée Toussaint Beach

GIA premiered the Racial Equity in Arts Funding Workshop at the 2017 annual Grantmakers in the Arts conference. Since then, GIA has been developing and hosting the workshop for funders in partnership with Race Forward, TrueNorth EDI, and guest practitioners in the field. The workshops have been designed to help participants recognize that cultural funding is a system that has been historically racialized like so many societal systems, and to help guide our approaches to re-designing cultural funding as an anti-racist system.  

On this podcast, we are glad to be joined by special guest Marcus Walton, President & CEO, Grantmakers for Effective Organizations who will be in conversation with our very own, Eddie Torres, President & CEO, Grantmakers in the Arts. 

They discuss their experiences with the racial equity workshop given their unique roles within the workshop, and what it means to be in a transformational relationship. There is still space to register for the March 2023 workshop.
