Gifta, Xyde & Vispera - Power [Premiere]

For the 18th release in the Phase Records DNB catalogue, the Head Honcho herself, Gifta, drops her debut EP. Over the past three years, she's been working tirelessly to develop her unique sound as a producer while pushing the label to be a platform for fresh talent and innovative music. Her 'Keep It Tuned' EP reflects the growth she's been striving for, showcasing the dark, aggressive, and dynamic style she wants to be known for. This release clearly demonstrates why her music deserves attention.

The three-track EP is marked by its hard-hitting drums that drive the tunes with a powerful yet smooth rhythm – a hallmark of her production. Gifta blends these with bold sound design, deep subs, and clever variations to create a trio of impactful underground tracks. Designed with ravers in mind, the EP stays true to her roots as a lover of the Drum and Bass live scene. Keeping with her passion for supporting others, label regular Ominous features on the title track, and residents Xyde and Vispera join her for the final track. The themes are evident in the track names: this EP is about stepping up, finding your inner strength, and staying true to yourself as you grow.

This project is full of energy and signals what's to come from Gifta in the future.

Today, Gifta blesses us with an energetic and wonderous mix, showcasing the best of DNB's techy minimal energy that has seen exponential growth across the scene, strap yourselves in for this mad one!

A DJ and producer hailing from London, Gifta takes inspiration from the aggressive and energetic sides of the genre she strives to bring dynamic, rolling energy to the forefront of her sound.
Her production is defined by slamming drums, loud bass design and girthy subs. Honing in on her love of the drum and bass live experience – she always has the ravers in mind when making music. Her sets and mixes replicate the same energy – impactful, heavy and rolling. Championing the vibes she loves and believes in. 
In the summer of 2020, she founded her own record label 'Phase Records DNB' which has quickly established itself as a well loved label on the underground circuit and was nominated for 'Best Newcomer Label' at the DNB Arena Awards. Furthermore, she now hosts the ‘Between the Beats’ podcast series, where she interviews people within the scene, bringing real and raw conversations to the table.

Having caught the eye of Hospital Records via their business development scheme in 2023, the sky is the limit for this emerging talent and killer boss woman!

Champion Mix 009: Gifta

In the seventh instalment of the 'Between the Beats' podcast series, I got the honour of chatting with the 1985 label manager, Amy Jayne.

Amy knows the drum and bass business world like the back of her hand. A graduate in photography who had a love for dubstep and drum and bass - she never imagined the career she would go on to have within the scene.

It's as if she has done it all, working for Hospital Records, Shogun Audio, now the label manager for 1985 and helping many artists set up their own labels and handle self-releases. She is the definition of a "Drum and Bass consultant" - her knowledge and experience of how the industry works is something that really shines bright.

This conversation between us is a story of hard work and teaches us that knowledge is power (as is the will to obtain it!) I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to interview Amy and hope you all enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed speaking with her!

Between the Beats EP 7. Amy Jayne (1985 Music)

In my 8th interview this year (mad)... I got to speak with the amazing Whisky Kicks. A wonderful full-circle moment for me, having been interviewed myself by Nicola earlier in the year for UKF's Label Spotlight series. Nicola is the editor of UKF, a freelance journalist, bass music enthusiast, a mother and still very much a raver at heart. 

Not only is she inspiring, but she is also fun, supportive of the scene, approachable, relatable and fiercely clever. A woman who stopped at nothing to be a trailblazer for others in the journalist sphere. 

We discuss the importance of building healthy relationships between artists and the press,  what makes someone worth shouting about and her journey from Croydon dubstep raver to editor at UKF. We dissect the feeling of imposter syndrome and why it can be a superpower when you're coming up in a highly competitive industry. And we talk very passionately about a mutual love of underground music (her kids lullaby music was Burial!)

Speaking to Whisky felt incredibly easy and comfortable, for me, this one feels really wholesome!

It’s our final podcast of 2024, and I’m incredibly honored to share my conversation with Pythius – one of the most influential figures in the Neurofunk scene. Hylke has witnessed firsthand the rise of drum and bass in the Netherlands, and his journey mirrors the growth of the genre itself.

What I especially love about this chat is how it almost transcends the format of a typical interview. At one point, I threw out my planned questions, and the conversation naturally evolved into a deep dive into his music, creative process, and personal story within drum and bass. From discovering the genre while just hanging out with friends in the park, discovering really intimate underground raves, to his time as a Blackout intern, and eventually scoring the Let It Roll festival – Pythius’s journey is truly captivating.

One of the highlights for me was learning about the Dutch drum and bass scene. As a UK native, it’s not often that we get to hear about how the scene developed in other countries. It was like a mini history lesson, covering the early days of iconic brands like Cheeky Monday and Liquicity.

I’m beyond grateful to Hylke for taking the time to speak with me and for being so open about his journey and his music. I really hope you all enjoy this one – it’s a special one to close out the year.

Well well well.. episode 10! Into the double figures for Between the Beats! Huge love to everyone who has supported the podcast so far and listened! In this episode I sit down with Trex.

Why do I love this chat between us so much? Honestly, Trex is just super chill. The more we spoke, the more I could really just feel the human element of our conversation. He's just a regular person, like all of us. What really shines through with him, which resonates with me super strongly... is how much this guy loves the music and how much Drum and Bass really has been THE THING in his life. As well as his family and raising his children.

Trust Audio, his view on remix's, his musical relationship with T>I, Patreon, keeping focused, being grateful... we go through it all in such a calm and casual tone. His mindset and his approach combined with a very evident love of the music and a huge respect for the long grind and getting the timing right... inspiring to be honest! (Not to mention its something we can all learn from as well!

Real treat in store for Episode 11 of Between the Beats (and my 10th interview…wooop!!)

Phil Fokus, or MC Fokus is the first MC I get to speak with on my podcast. This came about super organically when Phil hit me up saying he had been enjoying listening to some previous episodes. Other than being a huge fan of his music and how he narrates the underground.. I’ve held MC Fokus and his wisdom in high regard.

We speak in depth about self confidence, keeping the spirit healthy and happy and what does it mean to have true fulfilment both in ones music career, but in life as a whole. This is the sort of conversation that can really inspire and teach everyone, not just somebody within the music industry. I feel like we challenge each other to be self reflective and maybe even quite vulnerable in this conversation and I hope this encourages some of you to do the same within yourselves!

We went deep, yes, but we also discussed the state of Drum and Bass, the power of the Underground scene and the feeling of hunger that’s running through it at the moment. But we also talked about the fact it needs support and some ways in which that can be done. We discussed the many cycles of mindset and intention and how it affects your mental well being, and as a result, how you feel about your music and trajectory. My favourite part… is when we speak about the notion of ‘One Scene.’

AHHHH honestly, I really love this one! Big up Fokus – I needed that!
