Gilbert Isbin, composer, lutenist and guitarist, wrote new compositions for the Renaissance guitar, giving it a new life after almost five centuries of silence.
“Carpe Diem Suite”, a fresh and suggestive composition in ten movements, enriched by many influences.The musical writing is unique for the 4 strings following the essential and original peculiarities of the instrument with a mind open to many other recent musical experiences.

The ‘After Times’ –– a new reality. Time passes weirdly here. Distances are strange. Gravity is different. Prepositions no longer make sense. Up is down is left is right, inside is outside, and is under and over. The after times – an Escher-esque existence.

Emily Koh (b.1986) is a Singaporean composer based in Atlanta, Georgia whose music reimagines everyday experiences by sonically expounding tiny oft-forgotten details, and is characterized by inventive explorations of the intricacies of sound. Her work also explores binary states such as extremes/ boundaries, distinguished/ ignored, and activity/ stagnation, through her unique Teochew and Peranakan Singaporean lens. An amateur multi-disciplinary artist herself, she enjoys collaborating with creatives of other specializations, especially when sound plays a central role in the project. Emily is currently Assistant Professor of Music Composition at the University of Georgia, USA.

07 missing it up

This is a piece by Agustín Barrios Mangoré, also known as Agustín Pío Barrios, a Paraguayan classical guitarist and composer. This is a wonderful and deceptively simple little waltz. The story behind it is charming and well worth looking into (the title translates to ‘The Sleep of the Little Doll’) but for me it has a more personal one as well. It was one of my mother’s favorites and I often played it for her. She had taught me my first chords on guitar at age 8 and as I sat by her bed in her final moments on this earth, I did all I knew to do: I got my guitar and I played… until the last vibrations of the strings merged with the sound of her breathing, and together faded and passed away. This is the piece I played and needless to say it was a profound experience for me, and one that I didn’t expect to share here, but I wanted to do so in her memory. It’s my hope that this brought her a sense of peace, knowing that the music and I were there to accompany her on her journey.   Stephen Anderson

An Actuel song but never recorded by Actuel, only played live. This version was recorded right after the breakup, with Stephen from Actuel, and some unexpected players. Stephen Anderson: guitars, vocals, Victor Wooten: bass, Edgar Meyer: keyboards, Eddie Driscoll: drums. Kurt Storey engineered and co-produced with Anderson.
