This is a piece by Agustín Barrios Mangoré, also known as Agustín Pío Barrios, a Paraguayan classical guitarist and composer. This is a wonderful and deceptively simple little waltz. The story behind it is charming and well worth looking into (the title translates to ‘The Sleep of the Little Doll’) but for me it has a more personal one as well. It was one of my mother’s favorites and I often played it for her. She had taught me my first chords on guitar at age 8 and as I sat by her bed in her final moments on this earth, I did all I knew to do: I got my guitar and I played… until the last vibrations of the strings merged with the sound of her breathing, and together faded and passed away. This is the piece I played and needless to say it was a profound experience for me, and one that I didn’t expect to share here, but I wanted to do so in her memory. It’s my hope that this brought her a sense of peace, knowing that the music and I were there to accompany her on her journey.   Stephen Anderson
