The Resonance of Chaos is an immersive exploration of the sonic landscape of Hurricane Katrina. Through a series of conversations with individuals who experienced the storm before, during, and after its passage, the artist recorded each of their memories of the sounds that left a lasting impression. These recollections became the foundation for a soundscape that unfolds in sequence, tracing the timeline of the storm.

Sound profoundly shapes how we perceive and navigate the world and impacts our nervous systems in both subtle and powerful ways. Among the most vivid memories shared was the haunting silence that followed the hurricane — an absence of human activity and even birds chirping that marked a rupture in the life and vibrancy of the city. As the artist explained, “Everyone who I spoke to said the silence after the storm was extremely profound and surreal, because not only did so many people evacuate, but all the birds left, so there were no bird songs, there was no electricity, there were no cars, it was just quiet. Everyone described it as just this very eerie, deserted sense of quiet.”

This sonic installation exists in two forms: the first is presented through the gallery speakers and features only the reconstructed sonic elements of the storm as recounted in the stories while a second version is available on headphones and layers the soundscapes with selected excerpts from the conversations themselves.

GillaWatts' latest musical release, a six-song EP titled “The Voices Are Gone,” is a reflection of his recent experiences with an ayahuasca ceremony gone awry.  Three weeks after ingesting the psychoactive tea at a spiritual retreat, he spiraled into a relentless psychosis, filled with delusions, hallucinations and a dangerous sense of invincibility, which lasted for three months.  After returning to a normal level of sanity, the consequences of his psychotic actions came crashing down and he fell into a state of severe depression.  After months of guilt, regret and shame, Steve turned to music as a means to cope with the tumultuous experience.  The songs on “The Voices Are Gone” capture the feelings of regret, reflection and recovery that brought him back from beyond the threshold of sanity.
GillilaWatts describes his music as a melding of alternative rock, folk, and hip-hop that combines elements of acoustic and electronic music to create unique and resonating qualities. A solo artist, he uses a loop pedal and his mastery of multiple instruments to create pieces that sound robust, as if backed by a full band. Viewing music as a reflection of his identity and a tool for self-discovery and expression, it has served as an outlet for his personal experiences with psychosis, depression, heartache, and loss. He hopes that his music will be able to serve as an anchor and connecting point for others who may be dealing with the same things.
