Working under the name Craft Spells, Stockton, Calif.'s Justin Vallesteros makes music for bedsitters who dream about being social. Though often addressed to a love interest either real or imagined, Idle Labor is above all a lonely album that rarely betrays its origin as a solo project. Sonically it recalls Wild Nothing it the way it mines a large swath of 1980s synth pop, but its clear emotional tenor gives it a distinguishing perspective and personality.
Idle Labor exists in a time frame best described by the title of its ebullient centerpiece-- "After the Moment". These are sketches of romantic problems and solutions with the wounds still fresh and the thoughts uncensored. Taken as a whole, it could be read as a narrative following Vallesteros from heartbreak to infatuation and back, a few months' worth of romantic uncertainty boiled down to a taut and hooky album.
In a maundering yearn somewhere between Jens Lekman and Ian Curtis, Vallesteros introduces himself as a lovelorn melodramatist over sunstroked, near-Balearic pop. But as the narrative begins to hint at physical contact, the music works in lockstep, and Vallestreros builds tracks more as a dance producer than a singer-songwriter. And that's where he hits his stride-- while his vocals remain a central fixture, the post-punk mordancy is softened by locomotive arrangements that stack synth pads, ringing guitar, and primitive drum programming.
"Party Talk" starts a mid-album mini-suite with Vallesteros as a nebbishy Woody Allen character trying to decode a mutual romantic connection from casual conversation. But he leaps forward during the upbeat "From the Morning Heat", and by the fantastic morning-after celebration "After the Moment", something has apparently clicked; Vallesteros repeats the chorus as if he knows it's the best he's written.
The emotional high is predictably short-lived, and even within its brief half-hour runtime, more than a few of the melodies take detours and left turns. "The Fog Rose High" has the feel of a gothier Beach Fossils, while the anodyne dream-pop scruff of "You Should Close the Door" could have been a Radio Dept. B-side. But as with so many bedroom auteurs' debuts, it's tough to separate the creation from the creator, and Idle Labor shows the promise of a precocious songwriter who isn't claiming to have anything totally figured out just yet.

PAN is excited to announce the release of Objekt’s debut album, 'Flatland'. Written between 2012 and 2014, 'Flatland' follows up a succession of dynamic single releases from his base in Berlin, including the recent split 12” with Dopplereffekt on Leisure System, "Cactus" b/w "Porcupine" on Hessle Audio and three 12” singles on his eponymous white label series. His recorded work so far has toyed with techno and electro conventions and has turned dancefloor tropes on their head, tickling the boundaries of what can or can’t constitute an effective club record.

Approaching the album format on its own terms, Objekt makes full use of the larger canvas to explore a framework of competing truths, multiple perspectives and conflicting accounts. 'Flatland' imagines a world in which any scene can be seen from every angle at once. Semblances and cross-references entwine the eleven original tracks and Objekt’s existing recordings, shaping a powerful and absorbing album that weaves between the alien and the hauntingly familiar.
This is an effervescent body of work, its sound design evoking vivid imagery and conveying the same unmistakeable sense of detail and movement for which Objekt has become known. On his first attempt, Objekt has constructed a mature and multilayered album with its own story to tell, from whichever angle you choose to approach it.

The album is mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy, pressed on a double 140g vinyl & CD. It features photography by Joe Dilworth and artwork by Bill Kouligas & Kathryn Politis.

"In the cold and dreary winter of 2009, alone in his bedroom and hidden from the darkness of the world outside Justin Paul Vallesteros had begun working on something that would change his life forever. What began as a couple notes played in experimentation soon transformed into vibrant melodies that soon shook Vallesteros' musical foundation to the core. Guitar chords laced over pulse sating synth melodies and drum rhythms was a departure from Justin's previous work; he began to create the dreamy nostalgic pop music that is Craft Spells. Justin is a California native who now finds residence in the mid-size town of Stockton, the heart of California. Craft Spells is the epitome of the recent uprising of the DIY music scene. Coming from a place not known for its musical history or impact on music culture it seemed destined for Craft Spells to stay as a bedroom pop project with no final destination in sight. But soon the shear amount of blog volume his work began to generate was unimaginable. Sites like Weekly Tape Deck, Pasta Primavera, No Modest Bear and Pitchfork's Forkcast took notice and thus began the never ending worldwide posting and re-posting on blog after blog of Craft Spells. The sound is led by Justin's blissful voice, backed behind beautiful guitar melodies over heavenly synths, pop basslines and looped rhythms. Captured Tracks has released 7" single for the song "Party Talk" and will release the debut LP due out in Spring 2011 called Idle Labor. 2011 is going to be a busy year now that Justin has set up a live band for future touring. Keep a look out for tour dates in Europe and US come the new year. In no time at all, Justin has been able to move out of Dave Brubeck and Pavement's shadow to create something his own which he shares with the ever continuing admiration of the world."

bRUNA and Wooky are two key figures in Spanish electronic music. Regulars in the line-ups of festivals such as Mutek, Primavera Sound and Sónar, where they have performed on many occasions, both have a solid recording career behind them, which has led to them becoming part of the Red Bull Music Academy and topping the best of the year lists (bRUNA’s two LP's were named "Album of the Year" in Spain in 2009 and 2013).

Both are also co-directors of Lapsus, a multidisciplinary project founded in 2004 that has established three lines of activity: Lapsus Radio, their famous program on National Radio of Spain; Lapsus Festival, the avant-garde electronic music festival held annually at the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona; and Lapsus Records, for which they have already published distinguished artists such as Pye Corner Audio, Dalhous, Plaid, Etch, Kettel and Ametsub.

So it is of no surprise that the union of both creative talents would result in a split recording sooner or later. "Archives" is their first adventure together and also their personal vision of ambient music and its different branches. A further twist in the career of two unique artists.

Lapsus is also proud to announce that bRUNA and Wooky will be premiering "Archives" at Sónar Festival 2016 on June 18th along with the incomparable Alba G. Corral, who will be in charge of visual support to this really special occasion. 

The beautiful photographs that make up the artwork on the album are by Albert Miralles, Cristina Salinas and Alfons Pich, and the design was created by the studio Basora.

On ‘Redeux’ ‘Penelope Two’s’ themes of life and death and of hope and dismay are still prevalent, being brought to the surface in a myriad of ways.  

On this SoundCloud stream, Throbbing Gristle’s Cosey Fanni Tutti’s dystopian, avant-garde and jazz tinged electronics are deployed alongside her signature Cornet to flip the album single ‘Carry Me’.    

After the release of her sublime, critically acclaimed sophomore solo album ‘Penelope Two’, Penelope Trappes and Houndstooth are pleased to announce ‘Redeux’; an album of top-drawer reworks of tracks from ‘Penelope Two’, which showcase not only the intrinsic brilliance of Penelope’s composition and performances, but also her far-reaching and all-encompassing musical influences and significance. 

“There were no preconceived notions of how the reworks would work together, just total freedom. I’m absolutely in love with all of these! I never really thought I’d get the chance to collaborate with such an array of creative artists who have inspired me, but at this point, I’ve learned to never say never” explains Penelope.

Penelope signed to Houndstooth in 2018 and released her sophomore LP (and photo book) ‘Penelope Two’ in October 2018. The minimalist, ethereal album was built around field recordings, meditations, guitars, synth drones, piano and reverb, and deals with mortality, predestination and empathy. Previously known for her work in the electronic duo The Golden Filter”

Under the latter moniker the duo released albums with Brille, Vinyl Factory and Optimo that were praised by The FADER, Pitchfork, NME, Gorilla Vs Bear and Resident Advisor. Additional endeavours included sound-tracking short films and feature films and are currently releasing new material.

When not making music Penelope works on photography, video and performance art as part of a visual arts collective, Agnes Haus.
