Volume II sees nine emerging artists and producers from house and techno to electro-pop, reggae and grime specifically create tracks for the mixtape under the supervision of chief curator, B.Traits. New producers, Hodge, Lewis Boardman, Palace and i-D Class of 2015 member Novelist all make an appearance, but now we press play on this beautiful downtempo number from Brownswood Records rising stars, Anushka. Premiere: Anushka - Waterlillies

Brownswood are delighted to announce that we have signed Cuban singer Daymé Arocena.
Daymé was part of the Havana Cultura Mix project, which saw Gilles Peterson mentoring selected producers from around the world to make a record in Cuba with local musicians. She auditioned, prompting all producers to decide they wanted to work with her... In the end, she sung on three tracks on the album, including the massive "U Knew Before”. Seeing huge potential in her, Gilles invited her to London to perform at the album launch event, where she enchanted the packed out audience, and it was decided she should record a solo project for Brownswood Recordings / Havana Cultura. The announcement brought out a loud, rich, infectious laugh instantly recognizable as Dayme’s deep and chocolaty voice. “My first record, here,” she squeals. “It’s a crazy dream.”

Back in 2010, Gilles Peterson recorded a special Brownswood Basement show focusing on the evolution of drum & bass through the 90s and into the 00s. It was by no means a comprehensive history of the genre, but it did represent an excellent snapshot of the tunes that struck a chord with Gilles back then. 100% vinyl (and acetates), Gilles spent the best part of a day rummaging through hundreds of records and picked out around 40 of his favourite tracks from the likes of Alex Reece, Peshay, Goldie, Drumagick, Roni Size and Photek… then @alex-patchwork got deep in the mix. I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music - the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...

In Memory of Mark Murphy

Ahead of their first live show at St Pancras Old Church on Friday,  here's a chat I had with the two boys from LV, Will and Simon, discussing their beginnings, their D&B period, linking up with Keysound and Hyperdub, working with Joshua Idehen, Omkalumkoolkat, and the new project featuring Armenian pianist, Tigran Hamasyan. 

Ancient Mechanisms’ is the fourth album by globetrotting London production duo LV. It traces a train of thought that was sparked by a live session with Tigran Hamasyan back in 2012: two and a half years down the line and a trip to Belgium later, the finished record is as much about the workings of musical artefacts as it is about putting the virtuoso pianist into new contexts.

Blue Note recording artist and jazz drummer Otis Brown iii swung by the Brownswood Basement back in May, and discussed his background including fellow New School graduates Bilal and Robert Glasper, and his links to legends like the most recorded drummer in history Bernard Purdie and Donald Byrd.

Plus, Otis discusses his favourite drummers of all time, and the process behind his debut album from 2014, 'The Thought of You'.

So here’s my tribute to the mighty mighty one, Mr Maurice White, who sadly passed away on February 4 of this year. He left us an incredible treasure trove of music that has shaped the way I live my life!

I avoided the really obvious hits that you can hear everywhere and went for my personal faves, and a solid dose of the music that went on to shape the unique sound of Earth Wind and Fire from his early years working with two great mentors to him, Ramsey Lewis and Charles Stepney.

I got so much pleasure recording this - I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

Havana Cultura: Remixed // Gilles Peterson Bonus DJ Mix

Clyde Stubblefield played drums for James Brown for 6 years but his legacy has lasted a lot longer than that. His rhythms have been extensively sampled and particularly his 'Funky Drummer' break helped lay the foundations of Hip Hop, and later jungle and a whole world of electronic music.

Gilles Peterson presents: Havana Cultura: ¡Súbelo, Cuba! The Podcast. This 30 minute podcast is to accompany the release of the new album, Havana Cultura: ¡Súbelo, Cuba on Brownswood Recordings. The podcast  includes insight from Jigüe, Nino Fony and El Individuo and Laura Catana who manages Guampara Production company in Havana, Cuba. 

Havana Cultura: ¡Súbelo, Cuba! showcases an extended network of like-minded, forward-thinking musicians driving Cuba’s music forward. Following repeated trips to connect with venues, collectives and DJs, Peterson and Will LV – one half of LV, who’ve released on Hyperdub and Keysound amongst others – linked up with DJ Jigüe, a much-respected producer and DJ, whose Guámpara label has charted new directions for Cuban music. He’s been profiled by The Fader and Vice, and the album features his extended network of collaborators, connecting Afro-Cuban traditions with contemporary movements and ideas.

Gilles Peterson presents a very special 3-hour mix dedicated to the recently departed trumpeter Roy Hargrove.

“Roy Hargrove is one of the greatest, a real pioneer, a real soldier of Jazz. Rest in Peace” – Gilles Peterson

A prodigious talent whose star rose in the early 1990s, Roy Hargrove recorded and performed with a whole host of artists including Erykah Badu, Common, D’Angelo, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Jackie McLean and Oscar Peterson.

Roy Hargrove’s life mission was the to spread the jazz message and succeeded. He departed on 2nd November 2018 at the age of 49, and Gilles Peterson pays a special tribute to the talents of the man with a 3-hour mix exploring the sounds that he brought to the world.
