Gilliedj - Syrup Reunion (So Long & Thanks For All The Fish)

If there is anyone who demonstrates the number of hats a person is required to wear to be successful in the dance music industry, it's Gillie. Whether it be through his DJing in clubs, bars and on radio, or his year as one half of Freshdisko Promotions , or simply as a  fellow clubber, Gillie is for many Tasmanians the reason they first stepped onto the dance floor, and more importantly, the reason they keep coming back. The experience Gillie can lay claim to is all too often overlooked and taken for granted.

Born in Scotland, his life has been one dominated by a wide and all encompassing obsession for dance music. His work with one of the biggest companies promoting raves in the early 90's, Obsession , embedded in him the business skills and tricks of the trade he would employ in later years with his own promotions company, as well as musical knowledge, no doubt part of which is responsible for him becoming one of the most versatile and adaptable DJs on the scene.

Australia has been Gillie's home since ’95, and following his arrival, he was quickly grasped by the growing Tasmanian dance music community. Building his reputation through MCing and later as part of the seminal house music night MN2S, it wasn't long before his name appearing on an event flyer was of more importance to local clubbers than the name of the headliner, a fact other local promoters begrudgingly, yet openly admit.

For a clubbing scene the size of Tasmania's, Gillie's DJing commitments are surprisingly hectic. Despite holding the #1 residency at Syrup , he is often called upon to play guest slots at many of Hobart’s nightspots, as well as regular Sunday sessions at The Metz. Gillie is also favoured for guest appearances at other venues all over Tasmania, and high-profile clubs in the Mainland including Chinese Laundry and Moulin Rouge. Arguably, it is his support slots at every major and minor Tasmanian event, which fully demonstrates his ability to complement the best DJs Australia and the world has to offer. Gillie also recently hosted a weekly Saturday night radio show on Edge Radio , which was recently voted Australia's best community station! On top of this, Gillie is looking to be working with Australian online radio http://www.novafm.com.au/ to secure a weekly show to be broadcast online.

Ever the professional, the number of times Gillie has outshone a headline act with a sublime warm up set or a driving closing set, is too numerous to establish. This is a very big statement, considering he has supported talents such as Funk D Void, Funkagenda, Mike Monday, Moguai, Ewan Pearson, Dave Seaman, Fergie, Hybrid, James Holden, Steve Gerrard, Kid Kenobi, Chris Fraser, Mark Dynamix, Infusion, Sean Quinn, Kasey Taylor, Ben Korbel, John Ferris, Groove Terminator, Pee Wee Ferris, Andy Van, and Jason Midro to name but only a few. This selection of peers is a testament not only to Gillie's capability to skillfully play everything from funky House through to driving, peak-time Progressive, but also to the unwavering abilities as a DJ.

Never one for arrogance and attitude, (which is unfortunately commonplace in this industry), Gillie is a DJ who is all about ‘the people and the party.’ More concerned with building the atmosphere of the night, ‘reading’ the dance floor, and connecting with than crowd, rather than self-importance and ego trips, Gillie’s Primary goal after some 14 years in the industry, has always remained the same... …to keep that smile on the face of every clubber, long after his last tune has been played.
