My theory on it, because Lor has come off as being very practical when it came to finding out she's pregnant and taking herself to the hospital when she's in labor and leaving a note because her parents were out and in the 80s there was no cell phone to call anyone outside of their houses. She probably waited the year because of the fact that she was in fact 16 when she gave birth. She may have planned to wait until she was closer to 18 so she could be able to provide for herself and her baby. One of the main concepts throughout the past seasons is that she did NOT want her parents' life at all and the last thing she'd ever want to do is raise her child in that same environment that she felt so stifled so she got out as soon as she could with her kid because I would imagine that Emily was very hands on on how she was raising Rory during that first year. Just my theory.
