Time Traveler's Pocket Watch (Part A) | COMPOS2

“Death Masks” by Filipino Artist Zeus Bascon, is a reminder of how the progress of our society was built from the corpses, relics and knowledge of millions of our ancestors who cultivated the soil and form the foundations of our civilization in its early stages. We stand here today as modern men through the guidance of those who came before us. 

And yet, as people of this technologically advanced world, we tend to forget our ancestry. People look down on the primitive and dismiss the remains of ancient times, detaching ourselves from our true nature – surviving offspring of the dead.

“Ouroboros”, derived from the Ancient Egyptian term for a serpent image, eating its own tail. The image is a representation of life and death used in Ancient Egypt, Greece and also used in Mysticism and Gnosticism.

The composition is heavily inspired by works of National Artist for Music, Dr. Jose M. Maceda, such as “Udlot-udlot” (ritual-music performed in San Francisco, 2003) and “Cassettes 100” (performed in CCP, 1971). The said works from Maceda showcase complex musical textures through interlocking patterns similar to ones used by indigenous groups in their day-to-day activities. I initially planned to combine percussive ensemble with SATB chorister in this piece. For the instrumentation and arrangement, I used various interlocking patterns of human-made
sounds like clapping, shouting, singing, stomping of feet, chuckling, etc. 

This way, I may be able to connect the human body to create music that represents the human life cycle – bridging the body (instrument) and soul (music created). On top of the “human sound-box", an 8-piece SATB section creates pads that both compliment and contrast the movement of the human percussion.

For the melodic development of vocal lines, I first established a 7-bar motif intro. This intro served as my ONLY reference of musical ideas - through various manipulation techniques I learned from COMPOS2 class, I was able to create combinations of consonant and dissonant texture adding depth and mood to the whole piece.

My goal in this piece is to create a moving wall of sound that resonates my reaction towards the mural “Death Masks”. Life and death are both sides of the same coin – which is existence. Existence can be seen, heard and felt even if there’s no one around. By creating art and music, we artists get to imprint our own existence (combination of emotions, aspirations, principles, morals, etc. bound by tangible material) and send our message to the people of the future. Through this, we’re able to continue the cycle of life, even after death!
