Cascades Of Tears (Original)
On the original mix of Cascades of Tears, https://soundcloud.com/gestalteffect/ says it is “inspired by what the urge to cry can feel like” and that it “represents the inner friction felt when bursting into tears.”
Certainly the thought-provoking lyrics in the track reinforce the idea in this powerful minimal piece. More so, the resonant and metallic bass line pulses along with ominous pent-up emotion. The sporadic noise-like handclaps suggest flashbacks of violent mental anguish giving the track a deeply tense atmosphere.

Cascades Of Tears (Estroe remix)
Whereas the original mix of Cascades of Tears has tangibly human qualities, Estroe’s remix of the track takes on a more humanoid feel. The suppressed vehemence is still there but the fragmented lyrics, added with the mechanical drones, whips and hauntingly foreboding chords, paint the picture of some kind of artificial intelligence struggling to compute the most human of traits – emotion.

Slack Water Dream (Original)
Slack water is the term used to describe that moment between tides, when there is no movement either way in the tidal stream. And Gestalt Effect’s original mix of Slack Water Dream does in fact, represent a dream which the artist had. In the dream, he is looking up from the depths through towering, motionless kelp while around him leviathans lurk in the shadows created by shimmering sun rays through murky waters.
Deep drone-like chords submerge the listener into the gloomy depths of this track while the occasional and almost subliminal arpeggio swirls like gently dancing sunlight. Huge bass stabs come and go like close encounters with monsters of the deep. Thin and nervous pads suggest the sensation of angst that one might feel during a close call with one of these creatures.

Slack Water Dream (Beat Pharmacy Dub Remix)
The Beat Pharmacy dub of Slack Water Dream is the perfect alternative to the darker original. It focuses on the lighter aspects of Gestalt Effect’s dream with its air-bubble plinks and agitated percussive arpeggio. The floaty chords bring the listener closer to the surface while the intensely prominent synth stabs, again suggest a marine creature – a little less menacing than in the original mix, but far more curious.

With Proton Music consistently championing the cause of the underground dance scene with a roster of exciting and talented artists, we are proud to present a quartet of beautifully crafted tracks by Jack's CAB and his "Harmonic Energy".

Exploding onto the trance and progressive radar in 2012 after being selected to work alongside the iconic figure of Richard Durand, South African artist, Stefan Viljoen, immediately found his name on the lips of the dance music fraternity. A regular across the clubs of his Gauteng home town and beyond, Viljoen quickly saw his music signed to leading imprints that included Above All, F! Records and Southern State Music, before work for the Tiesto led, Back Hole, saw further global success and a regularly featured artist on Armin Van Buuren's "A State of Trance".

Taking a break from the trance sound, 2017 brought about a new phase in Viljoen's career as he created the Jack's CAB moniker. Representing "a new sound" infused with elements of techno, progressive and house, "The Hive" EP on Kalushi Recordings in March was quickly followed by "Alliance" on South African label, Triplefire Music, in June.

Now, Viljoen debuts on Proton Music with his Jack's CAB alter-ego as "Harmonic Energy" tells its four-track tale. Surrounded in a crisp rhythmic shell of stereo-panned claves, a laconic beat provides the basis for opener, "Purity". Coupled with an emotive bassline progression, the track evolves with a flowing melodic line that shines through in a stripped back breakdown. The addition of ambient background noise provides further texture in the third movement in a work of skill and craft. "Simulate" immediately hits its stride with strong four-to-the-floor kick and shuffling percussive hi-hats. A cavernous bassline provides low-end intrigue as a spine-tingling progression provides aural gold that pulsates and filters into the latter stages. An array of subtle melodic lines keeps interest high in a dark and edgy track of skill and guile.

Joining forces with fellow countryman, Third Identity, "Colateral Symphony" is characterised by a laid-back, bouncing groove that revels in strong beat and intelligently placed sub bass. A hypnotic motif supplies melodic interest as a counterpoint lines emerge post-breakdown in off-beat delayed and filtered glory, panning the stereo spectrum in spatial glory. Final track, "The Coalition" brings the additional talents of Laminin Music to the fray as the trio of South African talents combine in an aptly titled work. House rhythms keep melodic elements in check as a trademark Jack's CAB bassline provides customary dominant status. A chorus of melodies lie delicately in stratified layers across the mid-range with clever placement ensuring harmonic joy. Rising and falling with precision throughout the eight-minute voyage, the track is a triumph of southern hemisphere collaboration.

A quartet of tracks from the Jack's CAB studio has seen "Harmonic Energy" flow from his innovative sonic architecture.
