The Storm

The bike room at work echoes and drips like the side-scrolling dungeons I crawled through as a tween. (Or perhaps The Great Fairy Fountain from Zelda...) Today, I gave it my voice: a haunting, fractured rendition of Iron & Wine's 'Each Coming Night', a duet of vocals and keys rattling in a bike lock. Patrisse Cullors' keynote at the Allied Media Conference 2015 started with a soul-centering call to action ("How are you going to save black lives?")and ended in a #BlackLivesMatter dance party/barn-raising. This audio was captured mid-party, the whole audience on our feet, lending our voices to the call for Black liberation.

During a Reddit AMA in early October, physicist Stephen Hawking made an incredible statement about the connection between technology and capitalism that (IMHO) did not get enough attention. So, I decided to "illustrate it". This is me reading the following with some silly drums: 

"If machines produce everything we need, the outcome will depend on how things are distributed. Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution. So far, the trend seems to be toward the second option, with technology driving ever-increasing inequality."

On April 30, 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr gave a speech about why he was against the Vietnam War. In addition to being an important (and still relevant) portrait of American militarism and a critique of our approach to international development, King included commentary on the role of technology in public life that is ripe for our consideration here in 2015. 

To that end: an illustrated quote from his speech. It is a silly, public domain tribute using original MLK audio surfaced from Archive.org.
