Research shows that listeners often have a bias against female voices, even when they say the same thing as a man. Meghan Sumner, a linguistics professor at Stanford found that unconscious bias has an effect on how listeners extract information from voices and how the information is stored as memory. Even when a certain female voice is deemed trustworthy, clear, and comprehensible, her voice receives lower ratings when put in context with a man’s voice. Because a lot of times women speak differently than men, we interpret it as inferior. This podcast series presents the perspectives of three different women, using their personal experience as a way to showcase and dissect the existing gender, racial, ability and class bias against voices that fall outside of the societal norm.
