The UN Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, has operated since the late 1970s, tasked with monitoring the demilitarisation of the south of the country, supporting the Lebanese army, and ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches civilians in need.
Every year, the mandate has to be renewed by the Security Council, but powerful voices have been raised against extending it, which could spell either its closure, or lead to budget cuts that reduce its ability to operate effectively.
With the Security Council deadline just a few days away, Nancy Sarkis from UN News spoke to Andrea Tenenti, UNIFIL’s long-time spokesperson, and began by asking him to explain why it’s still needed.

Closing down UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon ‘would create a vacuum for stability in the region’

UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, speaks from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, on the fate of refugees there.

For decades, violence and instability in the DR Congo have forced millions of families to flee their homes, often multiple times, stripping them of safety and any hopes for the future. 

Ms. Grandi was in the country in search of fair and lasting solutions for the refugees hosted in Rwanda and DR Congo.

Mental health toll on kids in Ukraine will last generations, warns UNICEF
As children get ready to go back to school in Ukraine, more than three years since Russia's full-scale invasion, post-traumatic stress is common and many are afraid of dying.
That's the message from the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF)'s Representative in Ukraine, Munir Mammadzade, who's been speaking to UN News's Daniel Johnson.
"Quite often, what they basically fear the most is about their lives, and quite often, they mention to us that they don't have dreams or, or…any hopes," he says. "What they only need is peace, and this peace to happen as soon as possible, so that they can go back to normalcy."
