Women and girls account for over half of those killed and injured in the 31 August earthquake disaster; they also make up six out of 10 of those still missing.

Meanwhile, survivors face heightened risks of violence and exploitation, while many remain in tents or out in the open with winter approaching fast, warns UN Women.

“They told me they'd lost their relatives, many still buried in the rubble. They lost their homes, they lost their livelihoods and their source of income,” UN Women’s Special Representative in Afghanistan, Susan Ferguson told journalists in Geneva from Kabul.

“Yet as long as there are women humanitarians on the ground, there is hope that women like this will be able to access support and services,” she insisted.

Afghan women aid workers are already in communities trying to recover, making up 40 per cent of joint assessment teams that have reached hundreds of villages. Often, they’ve trekked for hours through landslides and damaged roads, dodging falling rocks during aftershocks, as Ms. Ferguson explains.

But tough restrictions by the Taliban leadership on Afghan women staff members and contractors from entering UN compounds in the capital, Kabul, has hampered the response, as the UN agency warns that without women aid workers, women and girls will be cut off from life-saving support.
