Am Sonntag, den 11. Oktober 2020 um 19.00 Uhr veranstalteten die Luisenburg-Festspiele ein ganz besonderes Konzert in Starbesetzung mit der Musik aus dem Musical DER NAME DER ROSE, das im Juni 2021 auf der Felsenbühne Premiere haben wird.

In der Fichtelgebirgshalle von Wunsiedel kamen für dieses gut einstündige Konzert aus der Originalbesetzung von 2021 die Musicalstars Livio Cecini (William von Baskerville), Gunnar Frietsch (Adso von Melk) und Rob Pitcher (Abt) sowie nur für diesen Abend die Hauptdarstellerin aus dem Musical ZUCKER, Marina Granchette sowie der norwegische Librettist des Musicals, Øystein Wiik, zusammen.

Die sechs Musiknummern des Konzerts vermitteln einen ersten Eindruck der Komposition, wie sie im Sommer 2021 auf der Luisenburg zu hören sein wird. Die neun Musiker unter der Leitung von Thore Vogt spielten die Luisenburger Fassung des Musicals, die extra für die Festspiele arrangiert und umgearbeitet wurde.

DER NAME DER ROSE - Du bist überall

Gisle Kverndokk (1967) studied composition with Olav Anton Thommessen, Lasse Thoresen and Alfred Janson at The Norwegian State Academy of Music, where he received his Master’s degree in 1994, and with John Corigliano and David Diamond at The Juilliard School in New York. 
At the age of 15 he wrote a radio opera commissioned by the Norwegian Broadcasting Cor- poration. The Norwegian State Academy of Music premiered his first full-scale opera «The Falcon Tower» in 1990. His next opera ”George’s Marvellous Medicine” was premiered by The Kristiansund Opera in 1995, and was awarded Work of the Year by The Norwegian Com- posers Society. It has since then been produced by The Norwegian Opera in Oslo, Opera Vest in Bergen, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Ringsakeroperaen and was presented at The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany 1997. The Norwegian Broadcasting Company has also produced it as a radio production.
All the major orchestras in Norway has performed his works, among them The Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 1999-2000 season he was “Composer of the year” with The Trondheim Symphony Or- chestra. His “Selene” for orchestra was among the winners of The Juilliard Composers Com- petition 1992, and “Initiation” for violin and orchestra won 1. prize in the competition for composers under 30 in The 1993 Paris ROSTRUM. “Symphonic dances” was premiered by Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in April 2014.

With librettist Øystein Wiik he has an extensive production: “Sophie’s World”  (Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen, Germany) 1998. “Vincent” (Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen, 2001), “Dangerous Liaisons” (Theater Pforzheim, 2002), “Homeless” (The Norwegian Theatre, Oslo, 2003). “Martin L.” (Theater Erfurt, 2008.-   nominated for The Nordic Music Prize.) “Around the world in 80 days” was commissioned for the opening of the new opera house in Oslo and was premiered in May 2010. “Max and Moritz” (2010) and "Supersize Girl" (2013)were commissioned by The New York Opera Society. A revised version of "Around the world in 80 days" was premiered at Landestheater Linz, Austria, in October 2016, and won 6 awards at The German Music Theatre Awards, 2017, including Best Musical, and Best Musical Production at The Austrian Music Theatre Awards, 2018.
“Bokken Lasson – stumbling success”, a radio opera, libretto by Ivar Tindberg and commissioned by The Norwegian State Broadcasting Company, won the Prix Italia in 2000. Their next collaboration, the opera “The fourth Watch of the Night” was premiered at The Norwegian National Opera in November 2005, and was awarded the Edvard Prize in 2006. It was revived in 2012, and presented at The Savonlinna Opera festival, Finland, in August 2012.
The opera, “Easter”, based on Strindberg’s play, libretto by Aksel-Otto Bull, was commissioned by Bergen National Opera, and premiered in April 2014 at Opera Sør in Kristiansand. Their musical "Letters from Ruth" (2014) has been performed in Oslo, New York and Washington.  "Upon this Handful of Earth" was premiered in February 2017, by The New York Opera Society, at The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, in New York City.
The children's opera "Purriot og den forsvunne bronsehesten", libretto by Bjørn F. Rørvik, premiered at The Norwegian National Opera, May 2018, and won the Norwegian Critic's Award.
Kverndokk has studied film music composition at The University College of Lillehammer, and has written the music for the Danish film, “Chinaman”, 2005. 
Kverndokk has an extensive production of church music, chamber music and vocal music. The CD "Fuge der Zeit" released in 2014 by Aurora, is music written for the ensemble Nordic Voices. "Symphonic Dances" is recorded by Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, released in 2018, to great critical acclaim.
