It’s finally time to make out again! This is your soundtrack to hug, kiss and dance. Open Season has recorded the sweetest form of Reggae music for you: in Switzerland's legendary Powerplay Studios, with the full band and much love.
 
What started out at the end of the 1970s in London’s Black community quickly spread across the globe: Lovers Rock. This type of Reggae music is so warm and soft that it lets you drift away from reality and vanish into the arms of a dancing partner. Even if it’s just for one night. Open Season’s answer to the pandemic are five songs in this style. It’s a special project for trying times. Love songs that have no other purpose than to invoke the glory of all these lost nights out and to remind ourselves that we are still near to each other.
 
The EP leads through a dance night like the one Steve McQueen describes in the second part of his “Small Axe” series, which premiered on BBC One in fall 2020. This yearning for a common space and the excitement about being able to party together again strikes a chord today — forty years after Londoners of Caribbean origin gathered in a private living room. In Switzerland, of all places. 
 
In the opening track “Fighting Chance”, Open Season sing about the deprivations of social distancing and the anticipation of what so many people missed in these times — a hug, a kiss and romance. The light beat is followed by the title song «Come Closer», which has a more seductive touch to it (at least that’s the mood all nine band members got into when the “recording” button flashed in the studio). The longing in the voices create this nice tension, which flares up in slowly moving hips, carried by a heavy rhythm. The next song is “Everything”, performed by Lucy James, who co-founded Open Season, then emigrated and now returned to Switzerland and the band after a decade in her native Canada. Here, the deep emotions take center stage, enveloped by a warm horn arrangement. The rhythm is inspired by the beacon of Lovers Rock, Janet Kay’s “Silly Games” that came out in 1979.
 
At some point, the night spirals out of control and the first guests leave the party. It’s the moment when lovers vow never to forget each other’s “Little Smiles”. The die-hards take refuge on the dance floor, where they are carried away by dub-inspired beats, obsessed with this one thought: “I Need Your Love”.

Wenn Open Season eine Single mit dem Namen "Rocksteady" rausbringen, dann zelebrieren sie den Soundtrack ihres Lebens. Das warme Gefühl, wenn der Bass reinkommt, das Touren durch kleine Clubs überall in Europa, das gemeinsame Feiern zu pumpender Musik. Das Studioalbum mit gleichem Titel erscheint am 20.02.2020, 20 Jahre nach Bandgründung. Es ist eine Art Heimkehr von Ausflügen nach Boombay und ins YB-Stadion. Ein Fokus auf organische, tanzbare, warme Rhythmen, live Bläser und ungekünstelten Gesang.
