I would like to thank the pianist and composer Joseph Haspel  so much for his wonderful performance of Farewell.  He has delivered a sensitive yet powerfully moving performance.  Thank you again Joe and thank you for your amazing compositions @joseph-haspel.

Joe suggested we release this work on Memorial Day.  It is a day after all that we remember, cherish and honor those fallen heroes who were once with us.  And this work was inspired by the memory of one of my heroes, my mum.  It was written many many years ago but has over time spawned many works. 

Farewell was originally part of a piano piece that I decided to orchestrate.  That work is posted here and is called Flight.  The section of Flight that this Farewell comes from also led to two versions of Farewell an Adagio for Strings and also a string quintet version too.  All of these works are listed below, but this piano only work is the original version where it all started.

Recorded on November 2021 at the Church of Saint-Sulpice, Paris, as part of the #SaintSulpice2021 composition competition organized by AROSS. 

Lux for choir organ and 8 voices is a meditation on light. It’s not the light that illuminates the material world, but the eternal light that is the universal symbol of divinity, for which the soul yearns. It’s the light that, together with sound, is the basis of the creation of universe in many cosmogonies, including the biblical one. It’s the Light-Sound which is emanation of God.
The text sung by the choir is taken from Antiphona ad communionem of the Catholic Requiem Mass. The sound of the words of Lux aeterna blends with the sound of organ in an atmosphere of calm and mysticism.

Carla Magnan: Amor dov'è la fe', for viola

This is a new version of a piece that has had a long histroy and means a great deal to me too.  It is taken from a much longer orchestrated piece called Flight which is posted.  If any of my pieces are autobiographic Flight is that piece and, if it is about me, it is the journey of me growing up and coming to America only to discover that we can not run-away from our past.  The adagio section (which is just orchestrated for string orchestra in this version) represents the mourning of the untimely loss of my beautiful mum.  It occurred just as my first child had been born in the States.  I dedicate this work to her.

I would also like to share Mariza Costa-Cabral comment at 6:09 as I think she has described it the best "Beautiful. It seems to be a person overwhelmed with emotion, as when they lose one of their most beloved and important persons in life. Painful and poignant. Of course, it is impossible to represent this kind of pain without beauty, because the pain is all about the beauty and the precious value of what is lost. And it is in fact a piece filled with beauty."

Farewell Revisited - An Adagio for Strings (Score available)

….When I was in Barcelona/Spain for a short time a met a enthusiastic group of professional street musicians who asked me to write them several arrangements (free of charge) to be played… to show their gratitude afterwards they asked me to write a piece for their performances at contemporary music venues giving me all rights to this piece …unfortunately they no longer exist as an ensemble…. Dear friends hope you are doing well!!!

Stare sjedokose kelnerice
po kafeima u noći

Dreamless (2014/15) for chamber ensemble – live performing

Teacher and Composer

Born in Palermo in 1983, Giuseppe Gammino attended at the Conservatory of Music “V. Bellini” of Palermo, where got a bachelor degree in violin. He attended at the University of Palermo, where he  got his master degree (laurea magistrale) in musicology under the guidance of Massimo Privitera. He played in a lots of orchestras, he collaborates with the press area of the Massimo Theatre of Palermo and the press area of “Musicheria Magazine On-Line”. He attended at the music composition degree course at the Conservatory of Music “C. Monteverdi” of Bolzano, under the guidance of Heinrich Unterhofer. In 2013 his composition Quasi un divertimento for violin and flute, received several praises and positive remarks, at the musical contest Un “divertimento” per la convivenza, organized by the Collegium Musicum of Bolzano. His composition per aspera Ad Astra (2013) for bass clarinet, viola and live electronics, was performed at the Museion, Museum of modern and contemporary art of Bolzano; while the piece Connection failed was performed in November 2014 at the 40th Contemporary Music Festival. In 2016 he was selected among the best three composers as part of the "Residence for Composers" project, organized by the Municipality of Salorno and the "C. Monteverdi ”in Bolzano at the“ Sculpture garden ”of Pochi di Salorno. In July 2016, the piece Siddhartha I was ranked second from the competition organized by the Südtiroler Künstlerbund (SKB) in the context of “Settimane Mahleriane di Dobbiaco”. In 2019 the contemporary music festival of Bolzano commissioned him a piece, Pelle II, performed by the percussionist quartet conTakt on 11/13/2019.
