Man of many labels Marcel Vogel turns out some of his most impressive material on Intimate Friends, bringing other talents into the fold to share in his vision of soul, funk, disco and house how it should be done. Having released the Human Beings album last year, Vogel invites a stellar cast to come and remix several tracks with predictably fantastic results. NY*AK enlists the honey-coated Rhodes skills of Mark Hand on their version of "Human Being", and it's an absolute joy to listen to. Meanwhile SoulPhiction gets into an equally heart-warming groove when he tackles "Always Isn't Only". Soul Clap meanwhile bring a little more party functionality to "Moonchild" before Simba offers up a very different, low-slung and laid back version.

Moonless Air is back with a fantastic fourth release, this time from Piemont. The taste-making duo have long been turning out essential dance music tunes that keep the underground alive and now they do so again with two more terrific cuts after many releases on labels like Glasgow Underground, Toolroom Records, and many, many more.

Surrounded is first and is a lively tech tune with a busy synth line dancing about and bringing real dynamic to the groove. Big synths add drama and the rumbling baselines keep you moving. It's a crisp, well executed tune with plenty of fresh flavours.

Sleepyhead then pumps the deeper end of the house spectrum with slick drums and hi hats and flowing bass. It’s melodic and hypnotic with dreamy vocal sounds and is sure to get the floor into a trance.

This is another terrific pair of tracks from two of the best in the game.

Reel People are back. Back to their roots. Back to the future. Back with a bang. Eagerly awaited new album Retroflection sees the revered collective recreating 12 soul, disco and boogie classics pivotal to their formation nearly 20 years ago and subsequent hugely successful evolution. Band leader Oli Lazarus has gathered a stellar cast of musicians and singers, – the likes of Angie Stone, Mica Paris, Omar, Tony Momrelle, Navasha Daya, Anthony David, LaSharVu and Sharlene Hector breathing fresh and irresistible life into seminal grooves by Maze, Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King and Teena Marie among others.

Mica Paris opens proceedings, her powerful take on Alicia Myers’ gospel-R&B jam I Want To Thank You an impressive herald for what’s to come – authenticity, contemporary edge, rich musicianship, beating soulful heart. Angie Stone provides sass ‘n’ slink over signature low-end synths for a suitably raw re-tooling of Yarbrough & People’s 1980 hit Don’t Stop The Music, whilst the funky strut of Thinking About Your Love (a crisper, more urgent update of Skipworth & Turner) perfectly complements Omar’s expansive, one-in-a-million vocals. Elsewhere, Reel People regular Tony Momrelle revisits Carl Anderson’s mid-Eighties gem Buttercup (penned by Stevie Wonder) with considerable finesse as well as Bill Withers’ seriously underrated collabo with guitarist Jose Feliciano, Can We Pretend.

Basement Jaxx songstress Sharlene Hector uplifts on a sparkling new version of Side Effect’s Always There. Reel People’s sweet summer hook-ups with Baltimore chanteuse Navasha Dava are also present and correct – I’m In Love and Can’t Fake The Feeling pay affectionate tribute to Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King and Geraldine Hunt respectively at the same time as showcasing Daya’s sublime, jazz-flecked delivery. There’s still room for Anthony David’s luscious rendition of deep-soul bomb Keep It Up (originally by Milton Wright) and for LaSharVu – a white-hot amalgam of Hector and fellow female powerhouses Vulu Malinga and LaDonna Harley-Peters – to smartly re-dress Teena Marie joint I Need Your Lovin’. Sleek instrumental twists on Maze’s Twilight and Pleasure’s Joyous complete the incredible line-up.

Reel People’s first full studio album in 10 years (following acclaimed releases Second Guess and Seven Ways To Wonder, as well as compilation work including Golden Lady), Retroflection reflects the highest possible level of passion and polish. Such soulful devotion and craftmanship has ever been a Reel People hallmark. Recorded in London and Atlanta over an intense 12-month period, Retroflection also avoids the formulaic overload of modern beats and basslines that countless others pursue. Here the past is artfully reawakened, Reel People’s talented cast of performers – overseen by experienced studio-hands Lazarus, Mike Patto, Matt Cooper (of Incognito fame) and Toni Economides - re-treading classic riffs with new yet respectful purpose. Their compelling neo-soul blend of now and then should awe diehards and newcomers alike. Retroflection is one hell of a return.

Exploited boss Shir Khan’s ever-dependable Secret Gold series returns for its eleventh edition, with two very tasty tracks that will appeal to a wide range of discerning diggers.

French genius The Mekanism kicks off with ‘Beach House’, a gentle summer jam that’s a world away from some of his more pumping material. Lilting acoustic guitar licks waft over thumping kicks and snappy percussion before funk-fuelled live bass and salsa-flavoured piano solos descend. The break drafts in touches of Afro-Latin percussion and hazy vocal snippets to complete a delightful soundtrack for a stroll across the sand. Come on in, the water’s lovely!

Bas Roos continues his excellent form for the label with a collaboration alongside Guy Steve. With a similar flavour to ‘Beach House’, their delicious ‘Route 69’ pares disco funk guitars with looping organic bass and jazzy electric piano noodling. Carefully deployed filters break up the rolling groove just when needed. An early evening dancefloor groove with impeccable taste.

This is a fresh cocktail for the summer. Sano from Medellín, Colombia (who released on Cómeme and Public Possession) and Toy Tonics head honcho Kapote created these 4 latin percussion tools for balearic DJ sets. 
The guys met in Sevilla where they were booked as DJs and had a good time: Talking about Narco books, puertorican rhythm culture, their salsa heroes and favorite descargas. In fact Kapote has a heavy addiction for latin american music and collects salsa vinyl since a long time.
The vibe was set after a few bocadillos and spanish wines and they planned to do something together. So here you get the result: The music was made half in Kapote’s Berlin studio and half in Sano’s Barcelona home. Fun fact: Sano made three records on Public Possession. The Munich label made by Marvin & Valentino. Before starting Public Possession Valentino used to work for Gomma/Toy Tonics and he started to dj at the early days Gomma/Toy Tonics partys. The world is small.
