March on Sparta is an intermediate level drumline cadence that was commissioned by Battle High School, home of the Spartans. With big bold rhythms this cadence embodies the spirit the group as they marched in to the stadium, or Sparta, for football games. The end features a spot for vocals, which for Battle was "WE BLEED BLUE!" This cadence also ends on beat 4, which is sure to drive your wind players crazy.

If you have ever listened to a pit warm up then you have certainly heard this exercise. Greene (after George Hamilton Greene) Scales is the first exercise that practically every front ensemble uses to get warmed up and learn scales.

My version is ready for you to immediately print and hand out to your ensemble. Better yet, my version comes fully scored for front ensemble and build with education in mind. Synthesizer parts are included and focus on basic concepts of chords and harmony to allow for easy transpositions to other keys. Timpani and percussion parts focus on another classic rhythmic exercise. Start your pit off on the right foot with this READY TO GO version of Greene Scales.

Double Stop exercise was my go to exercise for mastering all of my major and minor scales. So naturally when I started teaching this was the first exercise I gave to my front ensemble. Knowing scales and keys is incredibly important for pit players and can dramatically increase time spent learning show music. This exercise is simple to learn and quickly allows students to master their scales.
This exercise has four different variations. The first two variations are written in C Major but they are easily transposed to all keys. The last two variations hit all major keys in a chromatic scale. This exercise is scored for synthesizer, percussion and timpani as well so that you can pass this out to your whole ensemble immediately after download.

Double Stop Scales

Opposites Attract originated as a marimba etude to work on 4-mallet interval changes but has now been orchestrated out for a full front ensemble. A 4-mallet part is included for marimba as well as a part with the range for vibraphones and xylophones. A 2-mallet part is also included so younger members can participate as well. This etude focuses on individual interval control in each hand separately and then together while also providing an opportunity to work on phrasing and musicality. Opposites Attract makes for a perfect lot tune or warm-up etude for your pit!

Whole Tone Chromatic is a little more exciting way to practice chromatic scales while also introducing the concept of the whole tone scale. This exercise works on chromatic runs up and down across the range of the instrument. The accompanying percussion, timpani and synthesizer parts help this exercise groove a little more than traditional scales.

Grande is not just your stock triplet roll exercise, it focuses on all of the different variations of triplet rolls. Rolls off the left. Rolls on the first partial. Tap rolls. You name it, Grande has it. This is also a great exercise to work on sixtuplets with your bass line as it focuses on diddles and singles.
