Italian-born artist Riva Starr collaborates with New York-based DJ and producer Todd Terry on This Is The Sound. Previously, the pair have remixed each other’s solo productions, but their joint project on Hot Creations signifies a new beginning for the acclaimed producers.
Riva Starr talks about the significance of collaboration.

“Todd has been an inspiration since my early steps in house music,” he says. “With this EP, I just wanted to re-create some of the early house vibes with a modern twist. Feels good to have been able to collaborate with such a legend!” Together, the pair bring Riva’s vision to life on the title track, weaving a classic-house-tinged melody with crisp claps, penning an irresistible groove. Peak-time in every sense of the word. Riva Starr serves his solo offering on Creator, evoking a darker vibe. Chugging drums thump between a squelchy acid melody, paying homage to the birth of acid house in the late 80s, chopped with more contemporary textures.

Based in East London, Riva Starr’s roots lie in Naples, Italy. Having moved to London in 2008, Riva immersed himself in the UK tech house scene, playing across the country in Printworks, Motion, and Orange Yard to further afield in Pacha, Watergate, and Space Miami. As a multi-dynamic producer, Riva’s discography boasts remixes of work by Dennis Ferrer, Fatboy Slim, and Claptone and solo releases on Defected, Black Book Records, and his own Snatch! Records imprint. Grammy Award-nominated artist Todd Terry is a stalwart on the global house scene, breaking through in the mid-90s with the classic house heater “Keep on Jumpin” ft. Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown. Since then, Todd has produced a colossal body of work on Defected, Inhouse, Freeze Records, and several others, keeping his sound aligned with his New York heritage and reinventing it with a fresh flavour.

Hot Creations gear up to drop the eagerly anticipated House & Pressure from hot property Route 94. Echoing the excitement that surrounded his No.1 hit My Love, which shot him to stardom, the record has been in serious demand for months. Rowan Jones aka Route 94 explains how he wanted to “put out three tracks that were diverse yet definitive.” Title track House & Pressure packs a real punch and contains the vocals from Joey Negro's classic Ride the Storm featuring Linda Clifford. The dominant female vocal on ‘House & Pressure’ combined with the force of the drum machines is a traditional element that people connect to the Route 94 productions. With ‘Crazy Bitch’ it’s a more of a big room sound, incorporating ghetto elements. ‘Dark Keyless’ is the complete opposite, creating a groove that aims to grab the crowd and let them loose.

This year has seen a succession of big releases and remixes from Route 94 that cement his place amongst the dance music elite including the recent hit Mind, Body & Soul on Crosstown Rebels. The talented producer first saw fame reaching No.1 in the UK charts with My Love featuring Jess Glynne. Keen to remain on the underground scene, he followed with releases and remixes on Leftroom, Defected and Hot Creations. Overwhelming success followed as he performed at the likes of fabric, Sub Club, Space, Ushuaia, DC10 and many more. With a wealth of new material still on the way and a hectic touring schedule in place, it’s clear this is only the start for the young artist.

Drumcode returns with its 6th installment of the internationally celebrated A-Sides series. Techno titan Adam Beyer has grown Drumcode into a force to be reckoned with; the label has become synonymous with forward-thinking, functional techno and even after 20 years, Drumcode continues to find new boundaries to push, and ways to solidify its legacy as the world’s number one techno label. 

2017 is no exception, with Beyer’s imprint hosting it’s first stage at Tomorrowland, not to mention the expansion of the critically acclaimed Junction 2 where the Drumcode stage is the centrepiece and Adam plays the key role of festival director. The Drumcode phenomenon continues to grow each week, chiefly fuelled by Drumcode Radio, Adam’s radio show that’s broadcast in 57 countries via 86 stations and to a global audience of 16 million techno fans per week. 

The A-Sides series acts as a perfect vignette of Drumcode’s cutting-edge sound; functional yet inspired techno, all tracks tried and tested by Beyer himself. Vol. 6 continues this tradition with a collection of 16 multi-faceted cuts from a mixture of both emerging artists and experienced label friends. 

The heart-throbbing bass in Amelie Lens’ electrifying piece ‘In Silence’ sets the tone for the dark and dance-floor-ready energy that Vol.6 carries the whole way through. Other standouts include Mars Bill’s rough’n’ready ‘Mohave’. Pulsating and precise, ‘Mohave’ has highlighted many of Beyer’s sets recently as has Wehbba’s monster track ‘Fake’, which fans have been anticipating the release of all year. 

Label-favourites Dense & Pika also feature on ‘A-Sides’ Vol. 6 with their hard-hitting ‘Just a Beat’ and a huge track from Beyer himself who has joined forces with Enrico Sangiuliano to bring us their undeniably infectious ‘Preset Heaven’. 

With many more notable selections from the likes of Julian Jewell, Timmo, Tiger Stripes and Pig&Dan, A-Sides Vol. 6 is another impressive addition to the label’s prolific release roster and a testament to why Drumcode remains at the forefront of the electronic world.

Christian Cambas is back and celebrates his return with an original track on one of his favorite labels.

Keeping things totally subliminal with a haunting melody and an apocryphal vocal snippet, we are kept locked in via the pulsating bass and commanding synths that seem to have been programmed in some kind of dismal future.

A remix from label boss T78 was essential to this release, and the original has been completely flipped on its head, with a big surprise halfway through, as only he knows how. Another brother-in-arms from the other side of the pond is up next, and of course we are talking about Durtysoxxx who based his version on the synth progressions and provided the heads-down vibe of the package.

UK duo Drumsauw seal the deal with a spacious mix, letting their rendition breathe effortlessly while keeping the production crystal clear.

Fresh from a packed summer of Ibizan parties Darius Syrossian is back on Hot Creations with his pumping Danzer EP featuring a remix from the prolific remixer Adesse Versions.

Darius explains that the idea for Danzer was born out of frustration with current music sounding the same. Inspired by a Floorplan Boiler Room set he wanted to make a track “that has the energy of techno, some funk flavours and also heavily disco influenced. It became a firm favourite at my Amnesia residency with DO NOT SLEEP”.

Danzer is an utterly insatiable peak-time cut with a dizzying drop, powerful female vocal hook and scintillating strings. The techno tool version does what it says on the tin, adding an almighty bassline that reverberates throughout. Initially beginning life as a vinyl edits project, Adesse Versions has gone on to have releases on revered labels including Razor N Tape and Delusions Of Grandeur. On his version he flips the track on its head, taking it on an altogether different route, layering extra percussive pads and womping synths.

2018 has been a huge year for Darius Syrossian. He began a new residency at Ibiza’s infamous Amnesia, alongside big names including Cassy, Martin Buttrich and Alan Fitzpatrick. No stranger to the White Isle, he’s also held down residencies at some of the island’s most prestigious venues. Syrossian has had releases signed to impressive imprints from Moon Harbour to 8Bit and Get Physical to We Are The Brave. This year also saw Darius begin his radio show on Rinse FM, with the imminent launch of his own label, Mozy Muzik, still to come.

Glasgow Underground was set up in 1997 by Kevin McKay. He began the label releasing his own music and collaborations with friends and other Glasgow-based artists (Omid 16b, Studio Blue, DJ Q, Harri). Through his DJing and work for various music magazines (Muzik, Jockey Slut, Mixmag Update) he met some of his favourite producers of the time (Romanthony, Mateo & Matos, Idjut Boys...) and convinced some of them to join him releasing on GU. In the early 2000s, Kevin met Mylo and set up the Breastfed record label. The global success of "Destroy Rock & Roll" meant Glasgow Underground was put on hold. After leaving the Breastfed label in 2011, Kevin re-started Glasgow Underground and since then the label has gone on to re-invigorate Romanthony's catalogue with remixes from the likes of Dixon, MCDE, Gerd, Andres, Oliver Dollar, Ejeca, Audiojack, Claptone, Christian Nielsen, Supernova, Jimmy Edgar and Waifs & Strays. The label has also introduced producers like Daniel Trim, Brett Gould, Mia Dora and Illyus & Barrientos as well has releasing established & rising stars such as Metodi Hristov, Stefano Ritteri and Sabb.
