'One of Them' is a song which draws on feelings and emotions which come from unexpectedly finding attraction to a fellow shopper whilst doing the weekly shop at the supermarket. It is lyrically witty and stylistically takes influence from the 'baggy' sound of bands such as Stone Roses and Charlatans, the playful humour of bands such as The Kinks, Blur and Pulp, and combines this with the uncategorisable originality one has come to expect from Glass Ankle.

Manchester / Cheshire dreamy indie-folkers, Glass Ankle are back with their first new song in 3 years. 'For Another Day' was completed during what seemed like an endless amount of days confined indoors as a result of lockdown. Although this year has undoubtedly proven very difficult for everyone, it has at least allowed the group's main songwriter, Greg, to find renewed passion and focus for his musical project, as can be heard in this brand new track.

The main lyrical theme of 'For Another Day' is an undeniable urge to flee a situation that is becoming increasingly unbearable: to "leave it all to just decay another day" and find peace in doing something much more enjoyable and gratifying. The song's artwork playfully mirrors this sentiment, juxtaposing the highly undesirable prospect of a mountain of washing up with a view of an inviting sunny day outside the window.

Along with catchy guitar hooks, crisp glockenspiel, and lush synth pads, the exquisite vocal harmonies which have become a signature of Glass Ankle's sound are fully represented. That said, the song manages to avoid becoming predictable by providing inventive and alluring lyrical and sonic surprises throughout. One example of this is heard during the middle 8, where Chika, the band's Japanese keyboardist and backing vocalist, pops up and recites a ghostly Haiku to send shivers down the spine of the listener.

'For Another Day' was recorded and mixed by Greg at home and at Cutthroat 2, Stockport. It will be available for consumption on all major streaming and download platforms from Friday 24th July 2020.

Glass Ankle - Save Our Silkmen (Very Rough Demo)

A song born out of burning passion for a football club on the brink of extinction: Glass Ankle songwriter, Greg was deeply despairing as Macclesfield Town FC were wound up in the High Court with debts totalling more than £500,000, and subsequently expelled from their league. The writing was on the wall for the club that had been a constant in his life from a young age. In the face of the devastation, he channelled his feelings to create a song that communicated what The Silkmen meant to him.

The song was called “Save Our Silkmen”, and a demo was released in October which served as a rallying call for fellow Macc fans struggling to process their beloved club's demise.

Around three weeks later, local businessman, Robert Smethurst purchased the club. Macclesfield FC were saved and are due to restart down in the 10th tier of English Football next season! Spurred on by the supporter's response to the song, Greg decided to record a more polished version with tweaked lyrics to reflect the new sense of optimism. "Super Silkmen" is the result.

Fans were invited to sing on the record in the brief period when lockdown was eased, along with some of Greg's friends and family. It was a tricky process, even more so as the band's studio is in the town of a rival club... Stockport!

“Super Silkmen” captures the experience and essence of supporting Macclesfield. The lyrics (see below) are poignant, nostalgic, and full of pride, and are intensified by the upbeat and driving guitar-led musical accompaniment which provides sonic delights throughout. It is a love song in the purest sense that will no doubt prove moving for many Silkmen supporters and will galvanise them as the club embarks on its new beginning.

“Super Silkmen” was recorded and mixed by Greg Jackson at home and at Cutthroat 2 in Stockport. It was mastered by Andy “Hippy” Baldwin (The Who, Oasis, Interpol) at Metropolis Studios in London. 

All instruments were performed by Greg apart from backing vocals supplied by Tony Jackson (Dad and also song cover art designer), Janet Jackson (Mum), Tom Jackson (Cousin), Matthew Boycott-Garnett ( A Carefully Planned Festival), Sue Nicholls, Andy Worth, Sean Worth, John Souness, and Dean Holmes.

It is now available for consumption (released 12.02.21) on all major streaming and download platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, etc). All monies raised will be donated to The Silkmen Supporters Trust to be used for the regeneration and rejuvenation of the club and its facilities.
