Glenn Astro and Hulk Hodn (to some known as mighty Hodini) release their new full-length record “Ghosts” via Kommerz Records.

Producers Astro & Hodn's first joint album “Turquoise Tortoise” in 2018 combined uptempo beats, hip-hop and spaced out lo-fi slow jams effortlessly. On “Ghosts” the duo develops their exploration of new aesthetics even further through synthesized soundscapes and numerous collaborations with young talent from all over the world. Artists such as Danish neo soul discovery AGGi, King Krule collaborator Gal Go, Kamohelo from Studio Barnhus' band Off The Meds, Berlin-based voice experimentalist Yosa Peit and many more deep dived into the collaboration and transformed the album into a sonic multiverse.

Glenn Astro and Hulk Hodn are connected through a long lasting musical friendship. With their Detroit-inspired house releases they gained wider recognition by critics and listeners alike. Nevertheless, they’ve never been one dimensional artists. Berlin-based Glenn Astro's diversified approach to production as showcased on labels such as Ninja Tune and Tartelet bridges the gaps between ambient, hip-hop, techno and bass.

Meanwhile Cologne's Hulk Hodn gained the status of a German underground hip-hop legend. Through his records and shows with rapper Retrogott he gathered a cult-like following besides dropping high quality projects with other beat makers such as Hubert Daviz and Twit One and rappers such as Eloquent. Most recently he dropped the instrumental LP “Sparklez” on Sichtexot sub Casual Low Grind.

Taking his cue from seminal mix albums of days gone by, Glenn Astro is back with a compilation of original productions from a cast of fictional artists on Nothing Is Real, releasing May 4. 

Across 13 tracks, the Tartelet mainstay celebrates the thrill of discovery which came as standard listening to new entries in series’ like X-Mix and DJ Kicks, moving between head-nodding downtempo, ambient techno, broken beat and all manner of chill-out room delights. You might be left wishing artists such as DJ 1999, Mental Trance and Eye Soul8r had actual discographies to go and explore, but as Astro himself is keen to point out, “nothing is real.” 

Astro has never been shy to embrace classic tropes and tones in his past albums for Tartelet, Apollo and Ninja Tune, but he’s drawing on a different set of influences for this album and embracing the flexibility afforded by using imagined aliases for varied production styles. 

“I had the idea to do a mixtape, preferably with unknown dance tracks that also reflect that whole 90s/early 00s vibe,” Astro explains. “Instead of digging for some records that haven’t been sourced yet or trying to find those ‘forgotten’ treasures, I made the tracks myself. That way I had full control over BPMs, feel and the whole arrangement of tracks. I thought of a few alter egos and started producing the tracks in the order that I intended to play them in a mix. In the end a whole compilation of tracks emerged.” 

While the concept might suggest you’re going to hear a lot of over-familiar sounds, don’t be fooled. Astro is inspired and inquisitive, channeling the experimental spirit of the 90s and early 00s when electronic music was still continually being redefined in all kinds of micro-scenes. In many cases, Astro’s productions slip into the cracks between genres rather than specifically mimicking a style. 

In the run up to its release on May 4, the album will be framed by four key single releases which embody the omnivorous attitude Astro brings to the album. As Crystalline Reality, he explores classic breakbeat in detail, fusing it with starry eyed ambient techno synthesis in an unlikely but wholly convincing combination. Eye Soul8r’s ‘Autumn Subs’ injects ambient synth work in a Fax Records style with a rolling drum funk calling back to the trip hop era. ‘Steppers Worldwide, Unite!’ by The Foundation lands somewhere between pitched down breakbeat hardcore and dubstep, echoing the seldom-mentioned breakstep sound but injecting it with a subtle touch of dub techno. Brain Liquor’s ‘Jaque?’ revels in beatless, Detroit-informed machine funk, laces in some wriggling 303 squelch and gives everything a generous dubbing, but hold tight for the plot twist. 

Even if the reference points are detectable, the end result is a curious blend as indebted to ambiguity as the overall concept of the compilation. Like the spine-tingling sensation of hitting play and awaiting the waves of unknown sonics on one of those seminal mixes, you never know exactly what you’re going to get as you take the trip through Nothing Is Real. 

“In terms of dance music, the 90s and early 2000s are pretty much the blueprint for everything that I’ve later on made myself,” Astro admits. “At the same time, I don’t want to be overly nostalgic about it. We often look at those times, specifically the Y2K years, as being a lot simpler, realer, more honest, which in some cases might even be true. Simultaneously, it's insanely naive. Everything plastic isn’t necessarily futuristic, you know?”

Glenn Astro leans into the twilight months of 2024 with a new album from his Delta Rain Dance project. Divining fourth world sensibilities from his restlessly curious studio workflow, Astro weaves a mesmerising tapestry of sound on Music For Autumn which treads the line between horizontal meditation and head-nodding, backroom-ready groove.

Amongst his constellation of myriad aliases, Delta Rain Dance spells out the inspiration Astro takes from fourth world pioneer Jon Hassell. The project first surfaced with a string of tapes, LPs and digital releases around 2018, all carried on a label of the same name to keep Delta Rain Dance enclosed in its own space independent of Astro's many other musical endeavours.

"I’m really into the world building aspect in science fiction and fantasy," says Astro. "This is my way of creating worlds and spaces that co-exist next to each other. Sometimes they collide but mostly they exist peacefully next to each other or pursue some form of cultural exchange by collaborating with each other."

There's a strong sense of balance and cohesion throughout Music For Autumn, as organic percussion and instrumentation wraps around delicate synthesis and patient drum machine pulses so naturally it's hard to spot the joins. The sound has plenty of room to stretch out, from the mantra-like chimes and rattles of the album opener 'Green Light Fade' to the luxury funk of 'Mmmh, Nice' (featuring fellow Tartelet alumni Nelson of the East). At times the electronic elements seem to entirely dissolve, not least behind the loping strings and tumbledown percussion of 'Second Sleep', while achingly beautiful closer 'Plucked' centres on the fluttering movement and expression Astro elicits from his modular setup.

True to the project's influences, a consistent ambiguous mood lingers in the air over Music For Autumn somewhere between far-flung mystery and comforting familiarity, reliably calm but equally contemplative. It's an odyssey of serenity with enough nuance to make you really think, perfect for the days getting shorter, leaves crunching underfoot and the last fading rays of warmth from the sun.

Paying tribute to his favourite video game soundtrack ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’, Glenn Astro lays down Zonin’ - an EP made up of two acts, releasing September 23.

‘Hydrocity Zone’ is a level on Sonic The Hedgehog 3, and its theme has become recognized as a pinnacle of chiptune music composed by Howard Drossin.

On ‘Hydro City Zone (Act 1)’ Astro replaces the new jack swing groove of the original version with a steady house beat and expresses the warm, imaginative melodies through his own array of synths. More than just an exercise in nostalgia, it’s a killer track in its own right bursting with playful, psychedelic themes and infectious eccentricity.

‘Hydro City Zone (Act 2)’ is the deeper downtempo flip to the sprightly bounce of the A side, taking a more interpretive approach that simmers down the frenetic pace of Drossin’s composition with a minimal backbeat and a moody bassline broken up with buoyant jazzy keys.

Alongside the digital release, Astro’s Zonin’ EP has been pressed up in an ultra-limited run of just 30 copies, available exclusively through Bandcamp

Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint dips back into the electronic melting pot to compile its fourth “electr*c” compilation in as many years. The fruits of intensive exploration of the cracks and crevices within today’s wonderfully fractured bass music movement, Brownswood electr*c 4 features exclusive music from a new crop of up and comers. Some like Frenchman Nikitch and Belgian wunderkind LTGL are fresh out of the blocks, whilst the likes of Deft, Adam Elemental, Glenn Astro, D Tiberio and B Lewis have cultivated relative online infamy in recent times, each carving out their own unique path and singular artistry.

As usual we run the full gamut of styles, skipping from searing hypercolour hip-hop/bass hybrids; through ever so slightly wonky deep house; furious footworkin’ D&B that recalls vintage Metalheadz cuts circa ’96 (but somehow sounds steadfastly futuristic); awesomely drunken R&B; wrecking ball 808-driven bangerz; and introspective emo bumps… It’s a cluttered, chaotic, hyperactive kaleidoscopic trip – no doubt – but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Founded by Alex “Patchwork” Stevenson (Patchwork Pirates / Earnest Endeavours) in 2010, the aim of this series was very simply to replicate the ethos of Peterson’s much loved Brownswood Bubblers series and provide a platform for new, up and coming artists starting to make waves in the worldwide underground. It’s an approach that has characterised Gilles’s approach to DJing, broadcasting and music from the very beginning of his career and it lies at the very heart of his accidental slogan: “Searching for the perfect beat”.

The inaugural Brownswood electr*c in June 2010 provided a compelling snapshot of the dance music underground’s greyer areas, rounding up then newcomers (now major players) Shlohmo, Rockwell, 16bit, George Fitzgerald, Mosca and Mount Kimbie. Subsequent volumes burrowed deeper into the warren-like electronic landscape uncovering hidden treasures from Ta-ku, Koreless, Synkro & Indigo (these days known as Akkord), Stray (one third of Ivy Lab) and highlighted underground anthems by the likes of Dub Phizix and Krampfhaft, in addition to a whole raft of exceptionally talented newcomers.

Next up on Apollo is a stunning double header LP between crate-digger, DJ and producer Glenn Astro and Cologne DJ and Producer Hodini aka Hulk Hodn.

Boasting out electronic explorations and jazz patterns, 'Turquoise Tortoise‘ is a masterful, unique concotion that infuses Future Soul experiments into Detroit influenced House, Broken Beat and even technoid up tempo percussions rounded up with classic boom bap sounds.

Conceived as a loose limbed creative experiment,'Turquoise Tortoise' was not written and recorded in the classical sense of a collaboration as Astro explains:
"We had the idea of doing an album together for quite a while, but with one of us living in Cologne and the other one in Berlin we never really had the chance to spend enough time together in one place and go to the studio together properly."
Unsatisfied with simply sending files back and forth via the net, they struck upon the idea to produce tracks individually, bringing them together finally on one album.
"Although we didn't make the music together it still was really important to us to have a motif and to keep keep it cohesive." Astro adds. This was achieved by exchanging key elements/ FX taken from each of the 'completed' song and weaving them in to each of the productions as little call backs or references to each other, the smudged and trippy vibe perfectly complimenting such an approach.

Hodini's experience working with vocalists proved invaluable, as Turquoise Tortoise is the first time that Glenn has worked on a record with such a portfolio of talented featured artists - Ajnascent contributes his dulcet tones to 'Found!' and 'Viktor And The Quasar' to mesmerising effect. Longtime Astro pal Max
Graef shows up to play bass on the vibey b-boy workout 'Malaysian Moped' alongside a carefree vocal contribution by knowsum. A Uk flavour come courtesy via the rap/toasting talents of Peckham's MC Pinty on the beatific 'Beautiful Music'.

The album title 'Turquoise Tortoise' can be seen as a metaphor," Astro smiles "The turtle or tortoise is often used to describe processes that move forward at a slow pace. Glenn Astro & IMYRMiND - KDIM EP [Odd002] (preview)

Five years after his critically acclaimed debut album Throwback, Glenn Astro returns with his deeply personal album Homespun, releasing on Tartelet Records this October.

Marking a change in course from his first release on Tartelet Records, Glenn Astro is set to showcase his sophomore album Homespun, a testament to a visionary artist who has come into his own. 

Made up of ten tracks spanning 45 minutes, the record twists and turns between electronic meditations, soulful vocals by Ajnascnet, and futuristic electro, carving out a world of spacey eclecticism that is as nostalgic as it is experimental.

“This album is in all facets different from the first one, which was a deliberate decision. No vintage sounds and references, no sampling, combined with futuristic sound design and song structures. Less obvious references, more everything else. I tried to keep it as current and intuitive as possible,” he says. 

Known for his chunky beats and fuzzy textures, Glenn Astro was a key figure in the wave of MPC-heavy house music that spread like wildfire between 2013 and 2015. Since then, he has released on labels such as Ninja Tune and Apollo, leaving a distinctive signature on everything he touches. 

But Glenn Astro has quietly been crafting a new sound for himself. Sometimes taking detours – morphing into his dark alter ego and experimenting with artist collaborations. The sound of Homespun is a culmination of several years of reflection and artistic development – however, the album itself was produced in less than three months. 

“I set myself an ultimatum to finish the album within three months. If I didn’t make it, I’d have to rethink my career path and keep music as a hobby. If it wasn’t for this album I’d be selling home-assembled ballpoint pens now,” he says.

On the introspective first single and album title track “Homespun,” Ajnascent’s vocals lend a sincerity to the melancholic production. “It’s about the regret of not taking chances and giving in too much, but also about taking responsibility and being honest with yourself. Homespun is a nod to nostalgia and a desire for simplicity and prudence, being equally the culprit and the cure,” elaborates Ajnascent. 

On “The Yancey,” an homage to J Dilla, Glenn Astro paints his vision of contemporary dance music with shimmering melodies, deep ambient soundscapes, and advanced drum programming. “Moreira” and “Look at You” feel like spaced-out electronic funk hybrids, while “Taking Care of Business” goes back to the future with Glenn Astro’s take on jungle. Other tracks such as “Mezzanine,” “Slow Poke Flange,” and “Viktor’s Meditation” provide the finest dubby electronics. 

Out on September 16th, the first single “Homespun” comes accompanied by a video featuring the notorious Copenhagen-based graffiti artist and activist Spyo. The video provides a glimpse into a parallel, nonconformist society and subculture in the Danish capital, where urban exploring and daring quests for artistic fame is a way of life.

MIMS is excited to premiere "MoStLy Gh0sTlY", one of our favourite cuts from the forthcoming Glenn Astro album on Tartelet Records. 

Reminiscent of the ATCQ-sampled Red Clay, it certainly has a nostalgic tinge to it for golden age hip hip and perhaps even the early mutations of jungle and drum & bass espoused by Aphex Twin and his ilk, whilst sounding fresh nonetheless.
