About the cd:
A superb surprise episode for 041 in the series. Massive thanks to Nick Sneddon for sending over some epic CDs recently. We are really happy to feature more downtempo CDs... it feels like the recovery soundtrack to countless nights clubbing and those sun kissed days that followed (well maybe not so much if you grew up in the UK).

Considering this came out in 1996, it features some simply gorgeous deep house and laid back electronic which go onto cement why DJ Harvey is a cult dj amongst fans and fellow spinners. It's a pleasure not just remember my own collection, but have other people send in theirs. And it's even better discovering that there's hundreds of other classics out there which need to be shared with everyone. Thanks again for the good vibes.

"During the past decade The Rabbit Hole has gained a somewhat mythical status amongst Glastonbury’s bounteous array of attractions. It’s an off-the-beaten-track oasis, tucked away and difficult to access. There’s a festival facing space, diagonally opposite the Stonebridge tent in The Park area, which features bands and DJs, but that’s exactly what it is – the face of The Rabbit Hole. Finding your way into the main burrow, however, isn’t meant to be as straightforward.

Once you’re inside you’ll discover the delights of Funkingham Palace - a full-tilt dancing space with a delicious sound, courtesy of Sova Audio’s 4-point system, and an ever on-point DJ line-up.

I played there on the Saturday, directly after I’d finished my stint in The Rabbit Hole, and it turned out to be quite a night. The place was already jumping when I kicked-off soon after 11pm, and the vibes in there were palpable. I knew they had a special guest following me, but I wasn’t sure who it was until I was about to finish and checked if the next DJ was ready. Turned out that they’d pulled off quite a coup, with Carl Cox about to unleash a secret 3-hour set. It’s the first time I’ve played on a bill with Carl – I’ve only met him once previously, briefly on the Isle Of Wight with Nile Rodgers, but I was asked to DJ at his 50th birthday back in 2012, an offer I had to unfortunately decline as I was already booked that night. I really enjoyed watching him work close-up, the energy he emits is quite something, and this, of course, enraptures this audience, causing an active circuit between DJ and dancers.

It was a pleasure to play at both The Rabbit Hole and Funkingham Palace, so big thanks to Nick and Isaac from Gouranga for making things work out and providing such a great environment for me to spend a wonderous Saturday night in Somerset. Hoping we can do it again in 2020."

The Yellomix runs for just over an hour, covering the period ’83-’85 - their most innovative in my opinion. It gives me the opportunity to re-visit one of my favourite artists of the early-mid-‘80s. I was a huge fan of the Swiss group back then, they were really pushing the boundaries of electronic music and I was absolutely blown away by their production sound. It’s truly epic stuff, almost Wagnerian in its assault – relentless, surprising and sonically shocking, bombarding our senses with its strangeness and brooding melancholy. Regardless of whether beat driven or ambient, their tracks built a tension unique to their sound, once you know who they are, that sound could only be Yello.

I’ve been waiting to write a full blog post before I put up this mix from what is going to be my last festival appearance for some time, but its been difficult, given the circumstances we all find ourselves in, to fully engage, and although I’ve made a start there’s still more I’d like to say, so the post will have to wait a bit longer.

Its Easter weekend, so I think its about time I shared the mix – it was recorded on March 8th at the WOMADelaide festival, the centrepiece of my recent Australian tour, and was pretty much a perfect gig for me – environment, crowd, sound/set-up – featuring a jamboree of some old favourites alongside more recent releases / re-edits. There’s a strong Aussie representation, with tracks by Tame Impala, Confidence Man and Owl Eyes - a great new remix of ‘You And I’ by Late Nite Tuff Guy who also provides, along with Dr Packer, a number of reworks.

This was only a month ago, but how times have changed. Hope you’re keeping safe and coping during lockdown.
