Hi everyone, this was recorded live around a month ago from one of our Alpine Mastering Studio 'Bunker Sessions' live streams - I had this recording into the NEVE and Airfield for slight compression - hope you all enjoy it, and this was all live, nothing pre-programmed, exploring the dark arts of modular / eurorack gear, and making emotional music on the fly.  I started with ambient chill out meditation vibes and worked my way up from there.

It was in June 2016 and just over 5 years ago today that Glenn Morrison's majestic 'Goodbye' crashed into the Billboards at Number 1 for 11 weeks in a row.  One of the first Canadian electronic music acts ever to do so, and in the years ahead became a long running battle with bemused Top Of The Pops producers, who couldn't work out what to do with a classical pianist turned underground club wunderkind turned pop superstar, who largely performs behind a mixing desk, absorbed in the act of creation. In a sense, you could see their point.

For the rest of us, it was a good time.  Dance records were starting to make a mass impact on the mainstream.  Invention was in the air.  For Morrison, on the other hand, it was confusion.  Though the establishment classed him as a classical music composer and pianist, DJs would play his tunes and the radio would play his pop hits - this was a multilayered cake of an artist with deep roots in musical understanding and translation.

What Morrison has been doing over these years is quietly spearheading a movement away from the utilitarian musical philosophies that had come to dominate on the club fringe: the idea that to fill a dance floor for a few hours was enough.  As Glenn Morrison, he wanted to make music that you could listen to anywhere; he wanted to play live like a band plays live, to improvise and challenge what it means to be an electronic act on the touring landscape. That word improvise is the key.  To this day, Morrison still declines to describe himself as a 'dance' act.

'I don't differentiate between electronic music or any other kind' says Glenn, who, at the age of 35, is at the forefront of the global electronic music scene, with his classical ambient compositions, to his brooding techno modular iterations, to his meditative piano scores.

In other words, Glenn Morrison has helped to reclaim electronic music as an art form, one with a history stretching back more than 50 years.  Take 'Love You' and the recent single 'Just Over The Bridge', for instance, with their spiralling, chattering main theme and chaotic cross-rhythms - they have more in common with the work of avant grade orchestral composers such as Michael Nyman or Philip Glass. This is allied to a purity of sound most often associated with early electronic pioneers Kraftwerk.  The stuttering arpeggiated clashes of 'Modern Classical' or 'Controlled Randomization' bring to mind the vintage moves of Human League or Brian Eno.  These fragments give a pleasantly direct, post-acid, modern spin.  You can dance to it if you want.  You don't have to.

Glenn Morrison - Colourblind feat. Andrew Cole (Glenn Morrison & Luke Chable Blinded Remix)

Practicing piano is something I NEED to do in order to keep my chops up and also give me inspiration for when I'm writing my own records.  This here was a favourite of mine many years ago when I was competing (though I'm more rusty at it now!).  Mendelssohn's beautiful Songs Without Words Opus 102 No. 4 or otherwise known as the The Sighing Wind.

I performed this on a Bechstein D 282 which gives it that metallic and powerful sound.

The 8th release on Extinct records see label co-owner Glenn Morrison with a 3 tracker replete with warped baselines, full analog richness, and a club sensibility that will delight fans and DJs the world over. 'Diamondback' is a very heady late night club roller that will appease those with an appreciation for minimalistic groovers. 'Perception' has a very 90's inspired synth design feel to it and harkens back to Glenn's roots with that melodic progressive house vibe. To complete the package, 'Expressions' is more of a casual easy listening type vibe. Much more focused on a modal style melodic riffing throughout and juxtaposed with an atonal club groove towards the tail end, this record has a lot of emotion. Boasting a sound reminiscent of the critically-acclaimed ‘Northern Exposure’ compilations, Morrison brings an intelligent, thoughtful vibe back to dance music that many feel has been lacking in recent years. From dark, driving, progressive cuts to dreamy, trance-like singles; from throbbing, grinding, tribal tones through to hypnotic, undulating, bass-heavy pieces, this is a world class producer indulging himself and us in sound – doing what he loves and doing it very, very well.

Standout tracks on the album that premiered earlier this week include ‘Hang Tough’ – where Morrison uses John Harris’ poem ‘The Gospel According to John’ to tell the sordid tale of a drugged out prostitute turning over a normal man to the same hollow lifestyle – and ‘Another Dimension’, a dark and intense build up of sounds swelling through cascading melodies into an eruption of syncopated synth and grand piano riffs that take the track’s sentiment in a completely unexpected direction. Titular track ‘Into The Deep’ lingers delicately on the palate, Morrison taking his time to draw the listener in and out of his creation almost as if we need his sounds to breathe. A little stronger and a little darker, ‘Bumblebee’s driving elements of techno and chugging minimal house underpin deceptively simplistic top layers making it perfect for those mid-set progressions in the early morning hours or, as Morrison suggests, “Space Ibiza terrace early night kind of vibe.”

“I needed to get back to writing these instrumental pieces where the riffs are the vocal lines, and the vibe is a sort of hypnotic mysticism mixed with late night mind bending chasers,’ Morrison continues. ‘‘Into the Deep’ is a celebration of forward thinking progressive house music; a dash of eccentric and brash synth melodies juxtaposed with bright, uppity grand piano chords and warped out arpeggiations that I hope will light up both dance floors and late night music sessions the world over.”

One of my biggest inspirations growing up as a kid in this industry is on the remix front for one of my latest records 'Stereo Retrograde'. David Morales needs no introduction - truly an unbelievable musician, DJ, and one of the pioneers of electronic music throughout its history. There are no words to do justice to how badass I think he is and I am humbled and grateful that he came up with a HUGE batch of remixes here. Very modal building techno with flashes of strings and tension building moments is the name of the game here. The Dub reminds me of Italy at Coco, or Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos, and the Relentless Remix is peak time hands in the air rave vibes.

Camelphat - NYP2 (Original Mix)

Debussy's music is noted for its sensory content and frequent usage of nontraditional tonalities. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and his use of non-traditional scales and chromaticism influenced many composers who followed.  I hope you enjoy my variation and second interpretation of 'Clair De Lune' - this was more based off a hybrid combination of taking a piano score and mixing with a violin accompaniment.  I wanted to combine both in a more stream of consciousness type flow - this was all done in 1 take and no editing to preserve the integrity of the piece as a whole.

Claude Debussy - Clair De Lune (Glenn Morrison Second Interpretation)

Monsters is a 2010 British science fiction monster film written and directed by Gareth Edwards in his feature film directorial debut. Edwards also served as the cinematographer, production designer, and visual effects artist. Monsters takes place years after a NASA probe crash in Mexico which led to the sudden appearance of giant tentacled monsters. It follows Andrew Kaulder (Scoot McNairy), an American photojournalist tasked with escorting his employer's daughter Samantha Wynden (Whitney Able) back to the US by crossing through Mexico's "Infected Zone" where the creatures reside.

Edwards conceived the idea for the film after seeing fishermen attempt to bring a creature in with a net, and imagining a monster inside. He pitched the idea to Vertigo Films, who suggested he watch In Search of a Midnight Kiss, a low-budget film starring McNairy. Edwards cast McNairy and Able in the lead roles. Principal photography lasted three weeks and had a production crew of six people. Filming took place in five countries, and many locations were used without permission. Most of the extras were people who were at these locations during filming and were persuaded to act in it; all of their dialogue was improvised, and Edwards provided outlines of the primary plot points.

Monsters premiered at South by Southwest on 13 March 2010. Hours later, Magnet Releasing acquired the rights to distribute it in North America. It had a limited release there, beginning on 29 October 2010, followed by a theatrical release in the United Kingdom on 3 December 2010. The film received generally positive reviews and was a box office success, grossing US$ 4.2 million against a budget of less than $500,000. Monsters: Dark Continent, a sequel, was released in the UK on 1 May 2015.

Multi-platinum record selling musician and record producer, Glenn Morrison is the archetype of the modern DJ/producer star. The 37-year-old Toronto native is as happy rocking an underground house party as he is performing at an exclusive oceanic rooftop venue; as adept at composing an international club anthem like ‘Contact’ as he is at concocting a pop dance record that strikes to the Billboard Charts in America.  His single ‘Goodbye’ has been Certified Double Platinum and went Number 1 for 11 weeks in a row on the Canadian Billboard Chart, as well as going Number 1 in Russia’s Billboard Chart.  It wound up taking over Eastern Europe and became Number 1 in 7 Countries to date.

He is signed to Sony Records, Universal Music Group and Sony Music ATV as a writer, producer, & recording artist. And he is perfecting a sinuous, hooky sound that combines the eerie beauty of pure techno with light rains of melody and flashes of emotion.

In short, Glenn Morrison is one of the most dynamic and accomplished talents in electronic music today. Period.

Morrison is a difficult DJ to pigeonhole and that’s what makes him such a fascinating talent. One minute his sound is ruthlessly minimal and funky; the next it’s washed in color and vocals and emotion.

Glenn has had an unusual career path. He started off as a classical pianist, a preteen prodigy, performing  – and winning – competitions. Then came a life-changing encounter with electronic music.

Production continues apace in the new mastering studio Morrison has built in Toronto, entitled Alpine Mastering (www.alpinemastering.com). Be it sound design for video game companies like Nintendo, EA Sports, Activision or Rockstar, or his own productions, he simply doesn’t stop making and playing music.  His latest partnership with IMAX has been a thrilling experience, pushing the boundaries of electronic music to that of sound-scoring live theatre visuals.  Glenn & IMAX unveiled this concept with a 3 part show series at the 2012 ComicCon event held at the Ruben H Fleet Science Centre in San Diego, and it was a huge success. “It’s been a liberating transition for me to make music for all different stylistic purposes, and I’m very grateful for having the ability to do what I love for a living” says Glenn.
