GLISTENING EXAMPLES is proud to announce “Soundtracks for Takeshi Murata” (GLEX-1302), the debut LP/CD of Kentucky-based electronic musician Robert Beatty under his given name. Beatty has long been a presence in the experimental underground as a member of Hair Police and more recently performing and recording solo under his Three Legged Race moniker. He is also well known for his visual art, which encompasses installation, drawing, video, and album artwork design for countless artists including Oneohtrix Point Never, Real Estate, Vybz Kartel, and Peaking Lights.

“Soundtracks for Takeshi Murata” collects Beatty's compositions for digital video glitch pioneer Takeshi Murata, produced between 2004-2007. Beatty's collaborative relationship with Murata has spawned some of his strongest work to date, and Glistening Examples is honored to present this music to the public for the the first time outside of screenings, museums, and galleries. Beatty has performed alongside Murata's work in New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Beijing, where he performed several shows, including at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art during the 2008 exhibition, "Stray Alchemists."

The formative elements of the recent Three Legged Race full length "Persuasive Barrier" (Spectrum Spools, 2013) are apparent in the rubbery pulsations of "Escape Spirit Videoslime" and the ghostly buzzing harmonics of "Untitled (Silver)". Moving between hypnotic minimalism, dense processed atmospheres, and spacious drones, often in the same track, these pieces are the perfect corollary to Murata's fractured and viscous visuals. While the video and audio are linked in the same fluid time space, the soundtracks are presented now as stand-alone works, powerful compositions drawn from the same underlying chaos apparent in Murata's ever-shifting psychedelic environments.  This is exciting electronic music that invites the listener to imagine their own videoscapes with or without having viewed Murata's work.

“Soundtracks for Takeshi Murata” is published in an LP edition as well as CD format, with new artwork from Murata, design by Beatty, and digital mastering by Jason Lescalleet at Glistening Labs USA.  The LP includes a download code and an 11"x17" poster.  The CD includes a bonus track not found on the LP.

In the words of Ben Gwilliam: 
"Vestibül was conceived as a short series of listening studies in 2010 as my interest in the materials in my work was shifting towards the physical properties of sound media and the ensuing relationship between sound and image making. 

Recording took place over one week in early january 2011, working closely with NurNichtNur producer Berserker at his recording studio, several tape machines were sequentially recorded in solo and in arrangements. The same approach was made with other magnetic systems I employ producing something that was mixed in sections on an analogue system. 

Having had a break from the project after 4 years, I attempted to finish the work in late 2014, having had the dust settle on changes, thoughts and attitudes on sound. As I have shifted towards process even further, (to my ears) Vestibül bookends a body of work that has lead my music into new territories."

Originally published in 2005 on Campbell Kneale's seminal Celebrate Psi Phenomenon label in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, alongside albums by stalwarts of the scene such as MSBR, Bruce Russel, Lugosi, Pumice, Artificial Memory Trace, Ashtray Navigations, Reynols, Sandoz Lab Technicians, Kemialliset Ystävät, and Kneale's own outfits such as Black-Boned Angel and Birchville Cat Motel. This album has been out of print for ten years 

"I saw Jason perform in concert once. It was a baffling display. Screeds of Ampex400 trailing their way around the venue, coiling around man and beast like a ravenous bramble. Sloughing and wheezing its micro-things like so much dandruff after you've had your head shaved. The merciless click-clock, click-clock of spools keeping time in my imagination even though the withering volume had long-since obliterated my ability to hear what I was seeing. I was bamboozled and charmed . 
'Dear Mr Lescalleet, would you consider unravelling a spool or two for my little Celebrate Psi Phenomemon label? Wouldya? Wouldya?' 
...and with that, "To The Teeth" was conceived and squeezed out into this hateful world as a home-burned CD-R, swaddled in Celebrate Psi Phenomenon wallpaper packaging. Huzzah! 

I dug it like a hole to China. 

To these blitzkrieg-hardened ears, time has not worn down the prickles at the end of this stick. The whooshy hums that herald the opening moments slowly and inexorably give way to salvos of an altogether different species… a compelling narrative of arcs and eternal-crescendos There are glibbering cliches written to give language to these sounds… 
'glacial',... 'ecstatic',... 'transcendent'… PAH! 
"To The Teeth" is like an avalanche of small windowless buildings. Terrifying to behold, it shrinks us down to a weensy-little microworld where the seemingly featureless tape itself is re-imagined as a towering landscape, replete with near untraversable mountain ranges of magnetica, blown hither and thither in howling gales of the almighty, electrically-charged, everything of godawful NOISE. 

I still don't know how he made this. I don't want to know, I'm easily frightened.

The rural landscape of Bucks County, Pennsylvania has seen many of it's field-stone structures fall into disrepair and decay as its farm fields became subdivisions and condominiums. Trying To Remember A House is the beginning of a consideration of this entropy. 
Trips from, returns to, memories of walking through and swimming in the summer… 
The sounds of the fall line remain. This is an attempt to record the sounds of this area as they where heard and impart them with them the essence they once embodied. 
This is the first in a series of works by Mirande inspired by impressionist painter Daniel Garber, who vividly documented life in the Delaware River Valley.

Recorded, edited, and mixed by Christian Mirande using room and field recordings on iphone and tape, open-reel tape manipulations, and digital re-synthesis.

No Way In celebrates Joe Colley's return after a self-imposed hiatus from creating music. Colley was last spotted in 2012 with his "Lonely Microphone" LP on Italy's Senufo Editions. 
No Way In is a further exploration of Colley's terrain of internal dilemma, mental stress, paranoia, and the pessimistic contemplation of one's fate. This could be a soundtrack to distract one from these thoughts, or it could be the trigger that stirs such things.

My heart was racing, sweat was bulleted on my face and neck, and when I turned around to see what was behind me, out of breath, and losing my footing, everything went black. When I woke up I was lying in the grass near the top of the green mountain. A stone house was behind, and you were leaning over me, looking down the hill. The sun was hidden by the clouds, but the afternoon haze turned everything blue, unnatural in azure. A light breeze moved your hair. The clouds opened up, and on the next hill where it had rained, the droplets shimmered, reflected in the orange-baked sun. And then I fell asleep. Everything went black and disappeared again."

"The pieces that comprise Nature Mirror were composed and recorded during late spring 2017, as the rice fields of Nagano were being filled with water and planted. After a long winter, this process is known as “waking up the fields”. 
These paddies surround my home area and are a common sight throughout Matsumoto. Punctuated by lines of rice stalks, the water is still and perfectly reflects the environment above and around. The four tracks on this album were greatly influenced by these flat mirrors of water and contain location recordings from these areas. Stillness, parallel lines and nature are represented in the music just as clouds and mountains are reflected in the flooded fields."
